Faking It

So, my local knitting store has a beginning crochet class next month and I REALLY REALLY want to learn to do it. Despite some really good tutorials out there, including some great video ones (http://craftydaisies.com/2007/05/22/learn-to-crochet-lesson-1/), I'm just not getting it with the half double and all the other fancy stitches. I need to ask questions and show someone what I'm doing and say, "is this right?"

So, in the mean time, I've just decided to wing it and use the one stitch I know, single crochet, not follow any pattern, and just see what happens.

And here is Ernethto (hanging out with his buddy Geri, who thinks she's a pirate) ... and friends.

A while back I posted about painting on a wooden canvas. I got some good feedback as to how I shou proceed.
I used clear gesso (two coats) on a test board and I've tried water colours and oils mixed with alkyd and
some of the time the colour bleeds and other times it doesn't. Argh!
Anyone have any ideas as to what I am doing wrong?

Thanks!

So this may sound as a bit of a silly question, but I do need some serious help with this.
I am applying for a boot camp for designing (clothing specifically). Past experience I have had in design have basically centered around accessories, specifically wire jewelry. I've done plenty of designs-from-pattern as well as original designs.
So anyway, to all of you designers out there. One of the questions asks to describe your design style and your own personal style. What is the best way to go about this question?
Also, any to outfit designers, any suggestions/websites/books for drawing outfits? I have some experience, but I wish to polish it up a little.
Thank you!

i know this is a bit of a long shot since this community isn't pittsburgh (pennsylvania)based, but with all the members this community has, i'm hoping someone will have an answer. i'm looking for discount fabric stores or anywhere i could get fabric at low prices. i know of nationwide places such as joann's and walmart, but i was looking for something with a little more variety and hopefully something closer to the city. google isn't helping either, unfortunately. thanks in advance for any suggestions!

I am doing a Hogwarts uniform for Halloween and have not had much luck finding a dark grey v-neck sweater that I can afford, so I've been trying to dye a light grey one darker. So far, I've tub-dyed it with Jaquard and washing-machine-dyed it with Rit and it's still lighter than I'd like. If I hit it again with the Rit, is it likely to get any darker? I'll show it off once I'm done modding it.

One of my dad's coworkers is having a costume party next Friday night. My mom just decided she wants to go but has nothing to wear and I'm clueless as to what she could do. You people always come up with great ideas though. I checked the memories but didn't see anything that'd work.

Do you have some ideas for a costume we could make? It needs to be fairly cheap since we're not in the best shape financially right now. We have a surplus of plastic grocery bags and 2 bags of stuffing if that helps. I have an old Twister mat stuck back in my stash but if it'd be useful I'll be willing to part with it. Help!

So, I have full capabilities of stalking my ex over the internet.
And, actually, I have.
I found tons of myspace messages between him and one of my close friends.
He told her all about why he broke up with me.
Somethings he never told me.
And, they're flirting...
