I bought some ceramic statues about ten years ago and a bunch of acrylic paints to paint them with, so when I found them in the attic the other day, I drug out the [same!!] paints and gave them a complete makeover. I neglected to take any pictures of their previous coats, but suffice it to say, they were pretty typical for a ten year old.

There's one wizard and one maiden )

The wizard I didn't do any prep work on; I didn't even dust him. I did strip most of the paint off the maiden though.

Tips for this:
Acrylic paint will absorb rubbing alcohol (or rubbing alcohol absorbs paint, I'm not sure how the chemistry works out on that). My method initially was to spot-rub alcohol on, but this was really slow and annoying, so I switched to using a zip-up sandwich bag and filled it with alcohol a little ways. You can rub the plastic into the ceramic to take off some paint, and what you don't take off will soften so you can scrape it off.

I wasn't the most careful dude at scraping, my tool was initially fingernails, but after I broke those all down, I switched to a small screwdriver (it being what was at hand). Something softer would probably be better because I ended up scraping the ceramic up a lot and losing a lot of the little details and embellishments, but it worked pretty well.

I just wished I had my good paintbrushes here at the house. I had to make do with my old watercolor ones from when I was reaaaaaaaally little xD

Oh yeah, i forgot to mention; to gloss the wizard, I used some clear spray paint my dad had. I was afraid it might dissolve the acrylic, but it didn't :)

Now that I've started college, my crafting has been basically limited to what can fit in the dorms (no sewing machine, unfortunately). Crocheting though, has turned out to be extremely dorm friendly (and a great way to not study for finals!). This year I made my new friends gifts for Christmas...

Pictures of the happy people! )
And now I am home for break with my sewing machine! YAY!

I attempted art_lurkerart_lurker's feetsie bird. http://community.livejournal.com/craftgrrl/12167623.html?view=138494407#t138494407

It's not perfection (and my pics are sucky) but I'm pretty happy with it.

I started wood burning this semester as a way to stay 'arstitically active' but far away from painting and drawing. Under the cut are three, camera phone pictures of some Xmas presents I made...

she's made from ladoll stone clay, gesso, paint, glass eyes, doll hair, strung with elastic. I whipped up the clothes pretty quickly from a cheap scarf just so she wasn't nekkid around the house.

I'll try a new one after newyears.

i checked the memories but didn't see anything about this.  i'm basically looking for advice:

i would like to make some stationery sets (letterhead, notecards) for friends and family.  i have an inkjet printer, ink & tons of paper but i was wondering how some (if any of you) go about making stationery sets if you don't use an inkjet printer.  i checked with some printers around town but they do a quantity level that is much higher than i can see myself ever needing.  any and all input will be greatly appreciated.

I just made some cards for my friends and family and am quite happy with them :)
So I thought I'd stop lurking around the community and actually post them!

I don't know anything about embroidery or anything like that, but I made an amateur attempt at decorating this throw with leaves and a bird to compliment the new couch and I had a lot of fun with it:

Here's a doggie that I made for a coworker's mom who loves dogs. It's made of black fleece, some stripped flannel fabric I think is super cute, and buttons :)
I really liked how it turned out.

Another handspun silk necklace, possibly two ways to wear it? The slight stick of the silk tends to make it stay in place even when I tried it on myself at that angle, but I'm not sure it would stay that way all evening. Adding beads for counterweight on the other side would ruin the look, I think.

edit: As it turns out, it does not like to stay that way with a lot of movement. Ah well. I'm quite happy with it worn centered.

Here is a photo of my recent soap batch in the mold. I so hope it turns out nice.

I used a 20% coconut, 30% lard, 40% olive and 10% shea recipe. I super fated to 10%. I added a cup and a half Aloe juice after I cooked it. And I used chlorophyll juice to color. I've never done the aloe or chlorophyll before but so far I'm really happy.

I did an in the pot swirl but I'm afraid I over stirred it. the spoon I was using was kind flimsy and hard to fold the thick soap. I suppose that's just something I'll have to see when it's cut.

So who wants to see it when I get the bars cut?

Ok so as I have said before I am crafting for (and participating in) my schools production of The Vagina Monologues this year.

Recently the person in charge of the merchandise asked me for help.

"We have to come up with some really kick ass craft ideas that we can mass produce but as awful as it may sound, that don't take as much effort as some of the things that you're making.... not everyone is so craft inclined-- but we want to use the 40+ cast girls as more stitch n bitch people at the same time... ya know? and we only want to have them make things that we know will sell. i feel like if we have something that's a bit more cut and dry we'll be able to get the cast girls more so involved... there wont be as much that needs to be done (detail wise, etc.) and they wont necessarily have to sit and come- up with ideas"

Any ideas?

In the past we have decorated picture frames, teddy bears, and magnets (all of which i will suggest again)

I am stumped lol

Thanks in advance!
