happy holidaze grrls!

i'm more or less capable in most textile techniques but text applique is very quickly becoming my favourite mode of bizarro expression.

Earlier in the month we went to a baby shower for  some close friends. Instead of doing a store specific registry, they just gave the hostesses a list of things they need. Their main items were diaper and wipes. So I took the opportunity to make a diaper cake structure that is shaped like a cake made from clean diapers. Then the "cake" is decorated with colorful receiving blankets, toys and/or ribbon etc.

I based my design on the Alphamom tutorial by Chris Jordan. For a first timer to diaper cake making, I felt the usage of ribbon was gonna be easier than trying to wrap receiving blankets around the stack and fasten them. The couple are not finding out the gender of the baby so that presented a small problem as well. Before starting the project, I did some searching and a lot of the tutorials wanted to use three different sizes of diapers. I picked the Alphamom tutorial because it was simple comparatively and only called for size 1 diapers which are usually used the most.

I found the whole thing pretty simple. I ended up using close to 95 diapers in total. I rolled two together and circled them around a bottle of sparkling cider in layers. I fastened them together with a lot of rubber bands. I put tissue paper in each layer and circled with wide white satin ribbon. I decorated each layer with green and brown ribbons.

For decorating, I felt that owls would be fitting for a gender neutral gift and fit the colors they requested. I couldn't find any that weren't gender specific, so I handmade the owl with felt. The stomach piece from a fat quarter I found in a scrap bin. All the other pieces are just crafting felt. I used some quilt batting I had leftover and just pulled it apart to get some fluff to it. I also made three smaller owls that I plan on adding bells, and plastic to the stuffing to make them more engaging.

So I am going to visit a friend in about 2 months and while there will be staying with her and her fiancée. Because she is letting me stay there I wanted to do something nice for both of them. I know what I am making him, but my friend is vegan and uses all vegan products. A lot of the scrub recipes that I have seen call for using honey. Can something like avocado or coconut oil be used instead? I also have a recipe for a lotion bar, but I need a replacement for beeswax. Thanks

Hi all (and Happy Holidays)! Now that the craziness is over I finally have a moment to come in and share the handmade gifts that kept me busy over the last few weeks. First & foremost:

d
I made this for a friend who's a Mitch fan (as am I).
It's a little wall hanging made from materials I already had on hand (embroidery hoop, fabric, trims, chipboard letters).
The donut charm was found on Etsy.

a few more... )

There was also a tote bag made for my Grandma, but I dragged ass making it and didn't have time to get good pics before wrapping it up.

I fell in love with a bag that I just HAVE to make. The only problem is, the tutorial is totally stumping me. It's extremely confusing, especially for me since I'm used to following patterns. It's just so vague.

So, I was wondering (and I'm not even entirely sure that this is legal in the craft world) but can anyone look this over and perhaps put this in simpler terms OR, if you feel so inclined, want to make the bag and while doing so take pics along the way?

I just want to make this bag so badly but I'm at a loss. I've attemped and failed horribly when I tried to make it.
