I bought the most wonderful coat for only $17 USD. It looks like this, except the faux fur trim has longer hairs, and is fuzzier. I want to replace the faux fur trim with the faux wool on shearling jackets like < http://www.oldnavy.com/asp/product.asp?:=l&wdid=20070&wpid=175782>this one, but I don't know where to find the material, or how to go about it. I believe if I could trim down the fur, I might be able to sew it, but I'm not sure, and it's a beautiful coat, it'd be a shame to ruin it...

Any help or advice on finding the material and doing it?t

My significant other's grandmother gets pretty chilly at night, so I'm going to make her a whole set of rice heating bags. I'm going to make pocket-sized ones for her sweater pockets, and one that's about 3 inches by 24 inches for over her neck and shoulders, and a few 12 by 12 bags for slipping into her bed or resting on her feet while she's watching TV.

I first learned about these from rheumatoid arthritis mailing lists. They work wonders for arthritic joints -- hands, elbows, knees. They reduce morning stiffness terrifically. The place where I used to get my Remicade infusions (for the arthritis) used them on forearms to get blood flowing into veins before infusions. (Some of theirs were rice, and some were a dry corn that smelled just like popcorn when it was heated -- I wouldn't bother experimenting with this, or I'm sure I'd make jiffy-pop heating bags.)

I'll also make myself a set, and I might make my significant other one to put in his bed before he gets in, so he can be warm when I'm not there to be his radiant heater. :)

I've heard of folks putting aromatherapy herbs in them, but I know enough people who are over-sensitive to scent, or who have allergies to various plant materials, that I'll make mine plain ol' rice.

Last night my mom and I went to Walmart, and I picked up a few things to give teachers for Christmas. I bought 4 round votive candle holders, some peppermints [candy], and some wired Christmas-y [fabric] ribbon.

I glued the ribbon around the middle of the candle holders, but instead of glueing it to the actual glass I just wrapped the ribbon around and glued it to itself, that way it can be removed. Then I put the peppermint candies in them, and they look really cute!

I plan on wrapping them up in decorative saran wrap, so the candies don't fall out on my way to school, and giving them to some of my teachers. They look really nice and when they run out of candy they can either put more in or put a candle in. I made the ribbon so that if they don't like the design, or if they want to use it after the holidays they can easily remove it.

I bought the votive candle holders for 47 cents each at Walmart, the ribbon was 83 cents, and the candy was 99 cents. So this only costs a little under $4.

I'm planning on making a photo collage with modpodge. Can that stuff be used with photographs without screwing up the photo irrevocably?

another christmas gift idea: i bought a small "travel pillow" at walmart for cheap (i think ~ 1.50??) and sewed a cover for it. i'm not great at finishing pillows, so when i got to closing it up i folded the fabric in and stitched 3 decorative buttons (flowers) to it, in a row and evenly spaced. does that make sense?? anyway, i'd intended to actually use it as a travel pillow, but with the pretty cover and buttons it actually is a great looking throw pillow. so, it's now on my couch and i'm picking up fabric to make more pillows for friends. they don't use a ton of fabric amd you can choose the fabric and buttons to customize them for the person's decor.

HELP!
[identity profile] lolitastorm.livejournal.com
i'm not sure if you're supposed to post recipes on here but i just made this today and it's so yum for winter i thought i'd share it.

you'll need:
1 medium size pumpkin
1 large onion
approx. 1 tbsp of fresh grated ginger
salt/pepper to taste.
1 can coconut milk.

okay scoop out the inside of the pumpkin and put to one side. chop the large onion and fry gently in a large saucepan with some olive oil. add the ginger and make sure it doesn't burn(burnt ginger tastes horrible and will ruin yr soup!) add the pumpkin and leave on a gentle heat with the lid on for it to reduce a little. It will seem like a lot of pumpkin to begin with, but it goes down a lot. okay then just leave to cook and then blend :) add seasoning to yr own tastes.

this recipe might also be nice with some added corriander or potato or swede or something, so play around with it.

i hope you all like it.

to clarify!

by corriander i meant the leaf (cilantro to you guys, i gather!)
i used a large pumpkin, which i did use for carving up for halloween - you can add extra flavouring to this if you think it's a bit bland, or even use two smaller ones. the outside was yr average orange colour. and also after you've blended the soup you'll need to add the can of coconut milk and then heat it all through :)

i'm short on cash this christmas so i'm going to make things like decoupaged boxes/frames/tins/cards. i was just wondering, do pressed flowers work well when decoupaging? thanks a lot. :)

i finally figured out how to make my machine work. thank you for all of your help:)
the diagram of where the thread should come out of the bobbin was very small, and i had it in the wrong place. i got it now.

i went out and bought some cheap material at a fabric wearhouse nearby to practice on, but i ended up liking the mterial and made this:

a little crooked, but i like it anyway.

also, a friend of mine makes great pin up art. check out her online store here.

This is pretty crazy, but does anyone have any ideas for crafts with pop can tabs? (Those little metal things that just twist off?)

I've noticed that a lot of people are talking about decorating tins/altoid tins... www.dutchtreat.com is a store in Livermore, CA that sells cross stitch kits for "tin toppers." They are quick & relatively inexpensive & cute. They also have table toppers... I've done 2. Great store, if you are in the Bay Area.

Does anyone know where I can get good patterns for skirts, dresses, maybe even pants? I already make handbags without patterns because I have trouble reading them, but I'm starting to think that patterns are needed. Also, if anyone can explain how to read them too that would be great. Thanks!
