So I'm making my girlfriend some marble magnets as a quickie birthday present. Lemme just say she's a little vixen...so her magnets will be ones she can play around with. How many different sayings can YOU come up with the words :bad, boys, good, spank, are, to, me, love, naughty, I, hard:

Personally, I tend to lean towards the "I love to spank naughty hard boys good"...heh. Sorry, it's late.

okay, i've heard so much about all the nifty things you can do with aol tins and such, but i've got something slightly different. i've got some sprint cd's that came in nifty little cardboard things that fold open, and then there's a little pocket where the disc goes. the outside of these box-type things is shiny, but it's just cardstock underneath. really, it's about the same surface finish and weight as a spiral-bound notebook cover, maybe a tad heavier.

so my question is this: can i just paint over them with regular acrylic paints, or should i use something else on it first (a primer of some sort, something to scratch up the shiny part, etc...)? should i paint them with acrylics and the seal them with something to keep it on? I'm going to put mix cd's in them and send them to my distant family for x-mas, so the paint needs to be able to stay put while it's being shipped inside a padded envelope or box of some kind. (while i'm at it, i might as well ask if any of you wonderful crafty people know a good way to send cd's through the mail and not worry about having them break.)

any info at all would be greatly appreciated. thanks!

I have a question for you all.
sunday night I got in a bad mood and made a bag out of nothing. you can see details of it right. some way, it turned out pretty good for something done in less than 3 hours, but one thing is missing; the proper handles. I want bamboo handles. right now I just have sailorrope and it looks a bit too 80's for my liking
however, I live in Sweden and my guess is that bamboo handles aren't too common over here unless you buy it in big orders.
any ideas?

Ok, most instructions say to use 1/2 magnets. The standard (or what I would consider standard) marbles I've found are 5/8 inch. Most of the pics show the magnet as being approx the same size as the marble.

Are the magnets actually SMALLER then the front? I ended up buying 3/4 inch magnets but they are a wee too big, not enough to make a difference, but you still see the edge somewhat.

Thanks :)

I was out shopping the other day and I saw these really cute stocking caps, similar to the kitty ones. They looked really simple, and I figured I might be able to make one.

Some of you may recall that in my last post I said I'd be making Scrabble tiles. Well, they're done.

Tiles on the carpet (those were the first letters I could grab, I swear)

More pics and a full description of what I did )

So, that was Sekret Project Number Two (I think -- there are so many secret projects at this time of year). I'm really happy. I've got to go get cooking now.

more about marbles hee.

i bought those umm about 1/2" marble "nuggets", i got 100 for $3. well, the package said 100 but i counted and theres only 87 ahem false advertising ok. then i got some really big like 1 1/2" "wafers", there was about 13 for $3, and they were foggy like. so i figured i'd be able to see the picture through them or if not it'll make a cool effect or something. once i had opened them i noticed the way they felt and left my hands feeling weird so i tried running them under water and ta da! they were clear! just a hint if anyone bought that kind. they're perfect for bigger pictures.

i tested my magnet making skillz last night. for a little one i used a picture that was too blurry because i printed it from the computer and had enlarged it, then for the 2 big ones i tried, i didnt use enough glue for the first (very good idea to test first but my test was a printed out picture of elijah wood sob) and the other one came out perfect! it's a picture of paul mccartney. anyways. im going to make more tonight so ill eventually post a picture.

i dont know what the point of this was i just felt like sharing k.

No seriously. How does one go about making baffles? I found a few sites that talk about making baffled sleeping bags so the down doesn't shift around but none have pictures and they don't make any sense to me. :\ Please explain with details - I'm a semidecent sewer and fairly good at visualizing stuff in my mind, but apparently not this time.

On a random note, I finally have a working sewing machine of my own :) My mom's cousin wasn't using hers and so she lent it to me for an indefinite amount of time..I'll have it for at least three months, I think! Yay!

so yesterday I received next year's undergrad prospectus from MICA (Maryland Institute, College of Art). Let's discuss a few issues I have with that, and then move onward to us crafty folk.

1) I'm a junior at UMBC. I don't know why I'm still receiving these. Granted, MICA is an excellent school, and I did have my heart set on it... but I couldn't afford it three years ago, and I sure as hell can't afford it now.
2) Said Prospectus was like an effing novel. Hardcover, really thick, excellent binding I muss say, various paper weights. I opened it up, and there were all of these cool full color glossy pages and neat monochromed pages too.
3) This was the undergrad catalog! No wonder it costs upwards of 30 grand/year to go there!

Anyway, I thought this would be relevant to marble-magnet-makers out there, because there are pages of lovely 1/2 inch thumbnails that I think would make awesome magnets. I do declare, obtain one of these prospectii (sp?) immediately, if you want some nice pictures to cut out and magnetize or hang all over your wall. They're free, by the way.

Arg! So last night I went to Michael's and picked up some knitting needles and a nice skein of wool yarn. The needles are US:5, 3.75mm. I was lost on what kind/size needles to get, so i just picked some up...I don't know if this is related to the problems I had later. I got home, went to a site that someone recommended (can't remember what its called...You Can Knit or something). I learned how to cast on and did pretty well. I moved on to learning to do a knit stitch, and i got the hang of that as well, but I had *major* problems with the needles. They're a foot long about, I guess, and either the yarn would slip off the needles (when I tried to knit correctly) or I wouldnt be able to pull it through, or I would end up having to hold one needle upright on my knee and hold the other one normally. No matter what I did, my stitches were too tight. I'm not sure if they really are too tight, or I'm just getting small stitches cause of the size of needles I bought, but I'm having big troubles. Any advice? I'm soooo lost and I really want to have this scarf finished before Christmas.

I have an old pair of cord pants that don't fit me anymore. I was thinking if I cut a slit up each leg and add some extra material ...maybe I could make a skirt out of it? Has anyone done this before or have any ideas?

thank you.

and by the by, I enjoy seeing the posts of what everyone is working on.

You ladies will be the death of me! I went to the closest thrift store to get some old pans for making candles and lip balm (all your fault I SWEAR!!!) and here I am seeing the potential in everything! Sheesh! I had to have a LOT more self-control than usual.

Tonight I've made my first candles and lip balm. the candles were easy but not nearly as fun as soap making has been... though the lip balm proved to be a pleasant challenge!
Any suggestion s as to how the hell I make them (lip balm) different colors? I used a recipe that suggested beet juice and I used (ok nobody laugh TOO much)juice from a can of beets since that's all I could find.. that did NOT werk... I used peppermint oil as scent and flavor and that rocks! I jsut wish they weren't beeswax colored... %(

I would have posted pics but I didn't make anything worth photographing...ie not that different from any other lip balm etc. If anybody's got any suggestions about the lip color that are all natural that would rock!

Thanks for the inspiration even if it IS killing me!

Howdy. I am looking for jewelry findings (jump rings, eye pins etc) that are a steel or 'gunmetal' color. I can only seem to find bright shiny silver and gold. If I let the silver tarnish, it just looks dirty and gets a weird goldish sheen to it and so it doesn't look right either. Does anyone have any suggestions?

does anyone know where i can get 14 or 16 gauge galvanized steel wire and about how much it will cost me? thanks.

Spent part of the afternoon working on making gifts for the women at work. I decided on rose candles as seen here. I'm planning on adding cards with the gifts and need help deciding on text.

Since these are Christmas gifts and roses, I want something related to that. These are my choices. And the woman at work are professing Christians, so the nature of the text isn't a problem.

Since this is a cheap (Holder costs 50 cents and candle normally that much or less) and somewhat easy craft, I thought I'd ask for help here.

I just turned an old record into a bowl! I <3 it! See:

I got the idea from Naughty Secretary club.

I think I'm going to go to the thrift store and buy a bunch of crappy records for real cheap and use this to put everyone's holiday gifts in!
