Yup, here's another brain buster from the Mayzface!

For my birthday I received a pair of 20 hole (knee high) Dr. Martens boots. I absolutely love them, but the darn laces and way too short and the store doesn't have any bigger sizes. Trust me, my fist is shaking. I tried to deal with the shortness, but it is just not working out. The laces only reach the 15th hole, and I want them to reach the top and wrap a couple times. So today I went to the shoe repair store that was recommended by the Dr. Martens store, and a new pair of custom sized laces is 10 bucks. Now, I know I'm asking for a lot of boot lace, but that seems really spendy, considering a pair of 180 cm laces cost about 3 dollars, and I only need 210. Soooo...!

Is there any way that I could make my own boot laces? These are hardcore boots, so they have to be tough. I don't mind paying 10 bucks but I just can't afford it right now because, as Pee Wee says, "Christmas is the time to be thinking of others."

Thanks so much!

Now, I've heard many a time that Martha Stewart as unreasonable projects in her magazine. Costly materials, too much time involvement, etc. Sure, some stuff would cost a ridiculous amount of money, but I think that's the case with nearly ANY craft magazine. Here's one project that I thought for sure would break the bank, but it ended up being fairly inexpensive, and it's extremely impressive. I made this last year and just found a picture of it!

see the wreath )

All you've gotta do is use a large wire wreath form and wrap it with satin ribbon (I used ivory). Take glass balls on wire (combinations of larger and smaller ones, which I found at Michael's for about 99 cents a bag and I used 20 bags, I believe) and form bunches, attaching them to the wreath form by using more ribbon and hot glue. Easy as pie! :)

After much searching, I found 1/2" hole punches some of you have been asking about! 1StopSquare.com
Lots of other sizes, too. Unfortunately, I haven't found a store near me that carries them, so this is the next best thing.

Hey all,

I'm sure everybody's just SEW eggcited to hear more about marble magnets BUT there was some discussion about the cost of magnets and I think I might have something to help if you're willing to do a little extra werk.
(GOD I hope nobody's allready suggested this and I missed it...)

Magnet strips. Like thin magnets sold 3/4 in wide and on a roll. It's pretty cheap compared to individual magnets. I was initially worried that I'd have to make two layers of magnet to get it to stay up on the 'fridge but if you're using the small ones one layer is sufficient. The only time add is cutting out the circles/ovals to stick to the back.

I gotta run I'm making an attempt at learning to make chainmail(sp?).
Thanks for the inspiration, ladies-n-gents!

Here is a foolproof recipie that I use every year for Christmas they are fantastic and people will be raving over them if you make them. And for about 7.00 for supplies to make three dozen it makes a snazzy gift.

Simple Chocolate Truffles

1 pound bittersweet or semisweet chocolate
(Ive used Bakers brand and theyve turned out great but if you can get a hold of it I reccomend Ghirardelli.)
1 cup heavy whipping cream
unsweetened cocoa powder (for rolling finished truffles)
*note you can use crushed nuts, sprinkles, gold leaf, powdered sugar just about anything to roll these*

1. Chop chocolate finely and place in a large heat proof bowl.

2. in a small saucepan bring cream to a boil over medium-high heat. Pour directly over chocolate. Allow to sit 10 minutes undisturbed. Use a rubber spatula and gently stir chocolate and cream till combined. Allow to sit at room temperature for 15 mintues until just thickened.

3. Pour mixture into a shallow glass dish. Cover with plastic wrap and refridgerate until mixture is very cold and set but still pliable, about 30 minutes.

4. Using a spoon or a melon baller if you have one, scoop out into 1 inch nuggets (this stuff is very rich so a little will do ya), place them on a parchment or wax paper lined baking sheet and chill again for ten minutes.

5. Take the nuggets out again and roll them into your hands to make them into balls, they dont have to be uniform most good truffles arnt. Roll in cocoa powder to coat.
-Makes about 3 dozen

The best thing about this recpie is that it can be made your own, you can use anything to roll them and you can liqueurs to spice them up, Ive used Amaretto, Kaluha and theyve turned out great. You can even add lavendar or cinnamon. Id keep it natural, no artifical flavorings. :)

Let me know how this works for you if you try it!

hello! i've been a member of this community for a really long time, but i havent posted in months.

i too have hopped on the marble magnet bandwagon. i front a band called 'the glass bead game', and figured, what better glass bead game merch than glass bead magnets? so i whipped up some logos, got out the glue gun and went to work. i also made some inverted ones, where i had a couple of marbles that were too dark to see the image through, so i decoupaged the image onto the front of the magnet and added a high gloss lustre to finish it. they came out really well, they look more like buttons. anyway, here they are!

HELP!

Im running out of crafts and money to get people gifts!!

I made all my girl friends purses and everyone gets soap and marble magnets but i don't know what to get the guys!!
Any ideal's for nice teenage boys?

I looked and looked for a 1/2 inch punch with no luck.

What I did find was the handy-dandy cutting protractor from Olfa. It cost me about $9 CND and I found it at a local art store.

It takes a little while to get the technique down, but it's so much faster than cutting circles by hand and it doesn't limit me to just the 1/2 inch circle so I'll be able to use it for lots of other stuff.

Me being too lazy to use epoxy on my marble magnets (I've made 28 of them) I used Elmer's Mucilage. Works VERY well and easy to use. Thought I'd let you guys know.

[also, pink on grey is hard to read ;) ]

I just got done making some glass nugget magnets. But they aren't really magnets, cuz I didn't buy any magnets yet! I was so proud of myself! : ) I used a YM Magazine, and some of my Mom's clear glass nuggets she uses for stained glass. I used clear fingernail polish as the glue on some and rubber cement on some others. I just used that to glue the picture to the nugget, and they dried up really well. I still need to put something on the very bottom of the nugget, but I don't know what I should use, and if I should cover the whole nugget, or just the bottom. So can someone help me with that?

Thanks! Katy

I love making these headbands. You can use just about any kind of ribbon, lace, or both together. They are pretty quick to make. I posted instructions on my website.

this is for those of you who have made the rice heating bags.

i know you heat them up in the microwave but my question is:
is there certain types of fabric or ribbon you can't use because they aren't microwave safe?

i'm planning on using a silk on the outside/flannel on the inside fabric. AND ribbon around the top.
but i'm pretty sure the ribbon has gold threading through it.

this isn't liable to catch on fire or anything, is it?
i'm scared and don't wanna make the before i know.
anyone else have a similar experience?

thanks!

I love making those bracelets. But they hurt my back alot.
Anyway they take forever. Ugh, I wish there was a way to speed up the process.

To the last person who posted asking about making your own clothing. I've made lots of stuff over the years, but I just posted these photos in [livejournal.com profile] fruits so I thought I'd post them here since you asked. The only one of these I made from scratch was the pink coat, (which I posted a few weeks ago, sorry guys) the rest were modified as listed.
Lots of fun pictures to see )

a not-so-random question: has anyone designed/made their own clothing? these days i've been desiring to take my mother's sewing machine and make dresses and skirts and shirts, so i started to wonder. if you have and have pictures, please show!

battery powered light strand with 10 rice lights = $1.50
4 qt apple cinnamon potpourri = $2.50

i got enough to make a few more of these. i know the picture isn't the best, and perhaps wasn't necessary, but i was so pleased with it! each of those little glares is a light.
