This Post is to [livejournal.com profile] kimmercake. I Just want to say that I realy love everything that you have done to spruce up the site. I went to the memories to get exact info on making record bowls and let me just say.. It was very easy to use, plus I found lots of info that was lost in the jumble. It made all the ideas/projects easy to find.

I know it sounds like I am kissing your butt and all, but really.. I just wanted to let you know that what you are doing is great..

Thanks and keep up the good work!

Oh my gosh! I feel so ingenious. I had a couple of cheapy velvet-and-fur Christmas stockings - you know, the kind you can buy at CVS for $1.99 - and I decided I was going to use them as gift bag replacements, since I had a ton of little prezzies for my two best friends. I wanted to put their names on the stockings, but I've always hated how gloppy glitter looks on the fur. I was contemplating using thread and sort of loop-stitching the names on when I spied a baggie of long, silver foil chenille sticks. BINGO! I used my little wire cutters and some well-placed twists and made the letters out of the sticks. Now all I have to do is sew them on with some thin white thread. They look really, really cute (I don't have a digicam, or I would post some pics) and I'm thinking I can use them as part of my decor until we actually exchange presents.

I just realized that I sort of lucked out, because I only had to write "Chris" and "Bec," but if you used a thinner stick, you could probably spell out longer names as well.

Now I want to get another stocking and make myself one.

the first, gourmet sugar cookies, deceiving. take one tube of sugar cookie dough, cut in 1 Tbsp. cream cheese, and pinches of flour to firm. roll out as thin as you dare and cut into simple shapes. i used a spatula instead of a pastry scraper to remove the cut shapes from the counter for a slightly distorted "retro" look. bake until the edges are just starting to golden, cool and dip just one edge into melted chocolate of your choice.

the second, my sum total marble creations to date, minus three that looked icky and are being used on my bulletin board. the top row is red marbles with white hearts and black background. the bottom right row are reflective marbles dipped into brightly colored seed beads.

Has anyone ever knit with Red Heart Fiesta yarn? I'm knitting a shawl, and finding it very hard to work with! The first few rows were hell. Does it loosen up as you work with it more? Or am I just a terrible knitter?

hi. i'm jaymi and i just joined yesterday. i'd post pictures of everything i've made recently, but i'm afraid that's all top secret until my best friend gets them for christmas. she might read this!

my questions are about marble magnets. i just made my first two sets last night, and i'm having some beginners trouble. for those of you that use bond 527 to glue everything together, i have a question. when you look at my magnets straight on, they look fine. but, when i put them up on the fridge, there are dark spots that distort everything. i made sure to push out any air pockets and did see that the glue made it to the edges. so, what's the problem? am i supposed to hold down each marble until they dry?

another silly question. are the marble supposed to be bigger than the magnet? i found huge bags of marbles in the crafts section, but those were all in terrible shape. what i was able to use i glued onto 3/4" magnets. i found more expensive ones in the glass decorating section that i put on 1/2" magnets. the marbles overlap the magnet quite a bit. the magnets i use are extra strength, so i'm not worried about that. i just wonder if the images get too distorted this way.

thanks!

I just cut some small hearts out of very thick felt and sewed blanket stitches around it. I think they turned out really nice.

I made these wings during the summer but I thought it was worth putting up a picture as wings are a great gift any time if year! Everyone wants wings!

Here's my wings:
http://www.shutterfly.com/osi.jsp?i=67b0de21b30d50928427¬ag=1

The link is dead on the site where I got the directions but all you really need to know is that the wings are made out of 4 whole wire hangers with a leg from a pair of children's tights stretched over each hanger. Also, you can paint the tights with acrylic paint, which is what I did. Wings!

yesterday i posted about duct tape wallets. well, after reading all the sets of instructions i was given, i decided i'd be better off doing it on my own. the instructions were kind of confusing. so i sat down with a roll of duct tape and scissors, and made my wallet. i put the duct tape on paper (someone suggested that it would be easier, and after trying it without paper, i agreed) for the bigger parts. then i just used a dollar bill and a credit card for measurement on everything else.

it turned out pretty good. it's not perfect, but it's not bad for my first one. someone said you can make a purse out of duct tape too. that's going to be my next project.

I'm planning to sell them either attached to my hemp jewlery or at local pagan stores. Do you think they might sell? How much would you be willing to pay for one? I think they are very durable, i've been wearing one for the past few weeks. I have about 8 other ones too, all of different swirls and shapes. Oh, and the willendorf style blue swirly one is my favorite, she looks wonderful in person.

Does anyone else use sculpey?

i took to making some christmas bags. right now i'm working on a yellow and pink polka dot bag with a faux sequined flower sewn onto the top. (no pictures as of yet, since i'm not entirely sure if it will turn out all right.)

I had so much fun yesterday at the International Gem, Bead, and Jewelry Show. I just wanted to share my experiance.
We got there around 9:50. Some people told me that if I got there early, I would have to wait in a long line, well, they were right. It went by quick though. I couldn't believe all the neat beads I found! There were many that looked pretty bad, and you could tell that they were fake. Such as a strand of pearls that were painted so poorly that half the beads were stuck together. I want to believe that I got some pretty good deals. The only thing I got that is questionable is a strand of tumbled quartz beads. They are all extremely clear with almost no flaws, so they probably are glass. But they are pretty glass! :)
For those of you who are interested, here is the list of the things I got for UNDER $100.
*16" strand of 2mm light blue cat's eye (I LOVE cat's eye beads)
*16" strand of 12mm dark blue cat's eye
*36" strand of goldstone chips
*36" strand of rhodinite chips
*18" strand of flourite cubes (these are beautiful, green and purple)
*blue goldstone tubes
*quartz crystal points/pendents (this is a very long strand, probaly like 3 feet, and they look like smooth quartz points with a hole through the base, very neat)
*rose quartz tumbled beads
*amethyst tumbled beads
*clear quartz tumbled beads
*goldstone donut
*pink cat's eye donut
*hematite donut
*rose quartz arrowhead
*furnace beads
*16" strand of 10mm rose quartz rounds

Yesterday i bought some glass paint and colored marbles (like the ones used for making magnets). i painted checkered color squares with the paint on some old glass Ball jars, and glued a few of the marbles on. then i cut the bottom of a plastic cup and put it in the bottom and put a candle inside. it's all glow-y and pretty :)

and on another note, if there's any Ewan McGregor fans out there- i just made a ewan LJ community (http://www.livejournal.com/users/ewanites)

Hello, community ! I have a question that I hope someone can help me answer...I have seen many of your adorable marble magnets posted on here as welll as other websites and I would really like to learn how to make them, they would be adorable Christmas presents!! Does anyone know of a link to an easy tutorial of some sort? I would really appreciate it, thank you so much!

hello, i'm melissa :) i've been in this community for a very long time, just never posted before.
i'm making honey cinnamon oatmeal soap for christmas gifts this year. last year i made apple cinnamon oatmeal. using ground cinnamon in soap works really well.. it gives the soap a really nice color and it smells so good! i use a melt and pour soap base. you can buy a 2 pound brick for 9 or 10 bucks at most craft stores, but around this time of year i can always find it on sale for 6 or 7 dollars. i was going to make green tea soap this year, but wasn't able to get the green tea oil in time so i decided to just make honey cinnamon oatmeal. i bought a honey scented oil made for soaps and candles, and then just add the cinnamon and oatmeal mixture. so far it's turning out very nicely.. and it smells so good. i've been wanting to start up my own little soap business, but don't really have the money to do it. but now i'm rambling.. i just wanted to share my soap making with you all :)

OK, first xmas ever with a boy...

I read the FAQs for this, and am still at a loss. He's 18, intellectual. He wont want a duct tape wallet or a record bowl. He doesn't wear jewelry. He reads books. I was thinking of making a book for him, with drawings and photos and words...does anyone have any favorite poems or things to put in a book? We've been together three months.

See, the thing is, he is sortofkindawealthy and I'm the poor bum crafty grrrl. I KNOW he already bought me something, and I know it was probably expensive and perfect. What to do?

Ok, mom and I are making ornaments, the round thin glass kind. Anywho, we found one that was cracked in the box : ( So, of course we couldn't use that. Now I am wondering what "crafty" thing I could do. Here's what I have to use, now please give me some good ideas:
Broken Glass
Glitter
Acrylic Paint
Puff Paint
White Glue
Rubber Cement
Glass Nuggets
Magazine/Paper Clippings

Now with all of the "ingredients", please give me some ideas of what I could make : ) Thanks for the help! You guys are great and you always come through for me : )

I have an old pair of jeans from a couple of years ago that don't fit any more. They're all holey, so I don't think I should donate them to the salvation army(im bringing a huge bag of pants there sometime soon anyway). And since they don't fit, I wouldn't make a skirt out of em. I know you're a bunch a very crafty grrls, so what should I do with them and how?
[identity profile] undefined-cat.livejournal.com
I have a question for you. How do you feel about people advertising their crafts for sale here? Personally, the more blatant ones are kind of bothering me. I think it's cool that people post pictures of what they've made, and I think it's cool if they say something like "And I have them for sale at [some link]" but some of them are just promotions, like this one(no offense, just the first one I found). Perhaps I'm splitting hairs here, it's a subjective thing whether or not it's too blatant. And I really like all the posts about "what do you think about this idea" or stuff about where to get supplies and their cost, instructions, and whatnot.

So yeah, what do you think? I think promotions for sale would be better done through some other (maybe not-yet-existent) community.
[identity profile] qtbabe15.livejournal.com
I'm sorry if this is in the FAQ's but I don't think I saw it... but can you mod podge (sp?) onto a note=book?
I know that is a stupid question, but I had a really good idea, and I'm hoping that will work out becuase I don't feel like covering the notebook with the clear covering stuff.... anyone!?

it's not completely finished, i have
to paint the numbers on. but i am pleased
with how it looks.
it will be a present for my friend

Hi ladies. A while back someone mentioned that they were making braclets out of the marbles. I went to the link that was posted and tried it out. Not much luck I afraid to report. Has anyone else tried it? What did you use to connect it all? I put bolo backs on them and then strung stretchy string (for jewlery) through, but I can seem to make them all come together right. Any ideas?

hello....i've been making armwarmers as christmas presents for a few of my friends and i thought i'd post about the ones i just finished.

i've also decoupaged a tin with fabric and magazine cut outs and it looks pretty cool. if i ever take a picture of it and get it developed and scanned, i shall post it here.

oh i have a question about that actually...if i want to put fabric all on the inside...whats the best/cheapest way to do that? like..i would use glue right? what kind of glue?

i finished a scarf and a hat today! for my sister for christmas. and on the hat i put a little flower thing i made. it's the first two things i've ever crocheted. i had a started scarf from last year at school when my then roomate taught me to crochet. i finished it up and it's not the same stitches as before but it works. and i just started on a hat and it actually turned out to be wearable. i was surprised since i just guessed and i somehow switched the type of stitching i did on that too, but it turned out and i made this weird little flower. when i get a picture i'm totally putting it up because the fact that i crocheted anything is a miracle. they're this light maroon color. yipee. tomorrow i'm hiking over to michael's with my dog and a backpack ( i have no car ) and i'm getting other things to make for the rest of my sisters and my cousins. yay!

Mirror

I saw the post about the broken X-Mas ornaments, and I remembered that I was going to show you all this.

When I was in my sophomore year of high school (how scary, that was 4 years ago) I had a gym class and a gym locker. I kept this little mirror in it and one day when I put my backpack down on it, the whole thing broke. Much to my luck, there was a bolt sticking up through the bottom of the locker, right in the middle of the mirror. I am not superstitious or anything, but I had the urge to put the mirror back together. This is what I came up with:

I took a candle holder mold, the little colored marbles used for making mosiacs or...dun dun dun...magnets, plaster stuff, and the broken mirror parts and came up with a neat little mirror. While the plaster was still wet, I stuck in a little metal...ack...what are they called?...thing to hang pictures & misc on your walls in it.

ok, so I need what now?

Clear marbles, magazine clippings, and hodge podge. Does anyone reccomened a certain brand of decoupage?

I want to get this right the first time, and craftgrrl posts way too goddamn much for me to go browsing for these answers.

i just wanted to let you all know that acrylic medium works just fine for these things. i think these black and white ones are my favorites. i'm thinking of taking some of my portraits and doing sets of mags for people i know with their own likeness. wouldn't that be creepy? your own bits looking out at you from your fridge!

Thank you to the person with the pattern for the bead roses.
I made a couple of my own. Here are some pictures of my second
bead rose and a few of my other bead projects. But the rose was probably the fastest of the projects.

I got the red beading wire at Hobby Lobby because I could not find it any other place. But I encourage you guys to support your smaller craft stores because the people who work there know what the hell they are talking about and get better stuff than your general crap chains like Michael's.
