I thought I'd share a technique I use when painting anything. Instead of using a palette that I'll need to wash as soon as Im done, (not one of my strong suits, just look at the condition of my brushes for evidence) I use old egg cartons! They are perfect, with 12 wells for paint and the flat side that is sublime for mixing. When Im all done, I just throw the whole kit and kaboodle away.

I was at my parent's house recently, and told my mother I wanted to make a quilt. She told me to feel free to dig thru my grandmother's old sewing chest and take what I liked.

one of the bags I snagged contained these:

what are they?

the only thing I could guess was stitch breakers or something.

anyone know?

I went to uncommongoods.com and i found these:

i was wondering, do u think there's a way to make record bowls look like this instead of the ripple?

Hey all - first post here and i'm being annoying and asking a question. I figure i'll get some great feedback, though!

I recently got a whole bunch of cardboard chinese takeout containers for cheap from a shop in my town called 'Reverse Garbage' - I want to decorate the outsides and put some little gifts in them to give to people, just because I can (awww!). All i've really thought of to pop in there so far are some homebaked vegan cookies and some homemade soap.

Anyone have any further suggestions of some cheap and easy to make small gifts and trinkets that would be nice little fillers for these containers? I will consider and try out most things.

Thanks!

i've been driving myself crazy looking for a recipe for a body scrub. i can't seem to find anything in the faq, or on any of the sites i've bookmarked. i SWEAR i had a recipe for a brown sugar body scrub somewhere...

i want to make one for my boyfriend's mother. i don't want one that needs to be used right away. i'm going to be storing it in a jar, so it has to last a little while. it doesn't need to be a sugar scrub, so let me know of any that you know of. thanks!

This winebottle I made as a gift to my parents. It is made of driftwood and winecorks etc. It was a lot of work but I think it turned out very nice!

someones comment reminded me. I made a couple of the bags with the melted record bottom. Make sure you open a window when you melt them, they do release off fumes and my throat was sore for almost a week because of them. I don't know for sure if they are toxic or not but inhaling any fumes can't be healthy.

i am a member of an all-girl band ... and tomorrow we are having a "craft day" to make merchandise to sell at our shows. one of us has a button maker, and we're also putting together some patches and marble magnets with our band logo. anyone else have any other suggestions for things we could make? items on the less expensive side that we could sell for a small profit would be best :) thanks so much. i <3 this community.

Oh, how I have failed. My mother, being the nice lady she is, bought me a nice little "I Taught Myself Knitting" kit... thing the other day. And since I'm a leftie, we were thrilled that it's got a leftie section in it. So I took the kit out tonight all excited about learning how to knit, but... I can't get past the first page. The illustrations make NO sense and the descriptions make even less sense than that. They don't even tell you what to do, really! It's just sort of, "Here, look, this is a highly detailed and complicated description of what's in this picture, blah blah blaaaaaah." And I studied the pictures carefully and the perspective's all wrong! And there's bits of yarn going in one direction around the needle, but then it doesn't show up on the other side! It just stops! It's like the X-Files, I swear. I'm so lost.

I'm a visual/hands-on learner, but this is just ridiculous. It's hopeless.

Help? Other resources? For morons?

I have been mad crafty today.

I am decopauging a coffee can for my boyfriend. Yes, I know its after christmas, this idea came to me a little late, but anyway....

I wrapped a coffee can with masking tape once.
I put one piece of white paper above the masking tape.
I glued desired pictures (he's a bog deftones fan, so I put stickers and stuff of them all around it).
I put on two coats of mod podge glossy.
In one part of the picture I glued on you can see the text on the back of the page.
next time I know better.
Also, for anyone who knows about coffee cans and stuff, how do you make something with out having whatever you put on it take that shape? You know the indents around the whole can? I thought I did good by putting masking tape and paper down, but it wasn't thick enough. BLAH.
As well as this coffee can is a pencil holder, you can make your own magnets and post little reminders around the can. I was also thinking of buying some cork board in the raw and gluing some on the can, so it would be a push pin can. Another cool idea, is to paint it with that stuff that turns it into a chalk board.

I have some cards with pig images and I was thinking it would be cute to make them into large magnets but is there anyway to keep the cards safe?? I am moving twice in the next 5 months and I don't want them to get smooshed.
