I hope I'm not being redundant here....
I hoard all of my old magazines. I refuse to throw them away and tearing out the articles is just tacky. The natural solution to my problem would be to catologue them carefully and store them in slipcovers. So, I wanted to make some slipcovers for my collection, cover them with some nice paper or fabric. All of my searches to find some online have been futile (slipcovers for sofas, etc.) Maybe I'm just a poor searcher. Am I calling them the right name? Where can I find these? On an uncrafty note - I'm searching for attractive ones, too. Decorating them was just a separate idea.

Many thanks in advance and thank you to all who helped me with my capiz shell issue - they're in the mail and pictures to follow.

i'm stuck with a bunch of marble magnets right now, and i need a place to stick 'em! i was thinking of making a bulitin board out of sheet metal. i saw on tv once where someone took sheet metal (i'm pretty sure it was sheet metal) and made all of these swirly designs on it by scratching it with something... does anyone know what I'm talking about? because i'm not sure what to scratch it with! or does anyone have any other ideas of places to stick my magnets? when school starts again, i could always put them in my locker, but i want somewhere at home to put them... i think the bulitin board would be a good idea...

Hi! I've been a member for some time now, but have never made an entry. I have two questions that I don't recall ever seeing discussed. If I'm mistaken, kindly refer me to the FAQs.

Anyhoo, can you stitch and wash duct tape? It might sound kinda weird, but I have a pair of jeans that a swatch duct tape would look good stitched to the butt of.

Also, I have an empty Tropicana orange juice container and I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestion on what to do with it. It's the plastic one with the handle.

I love the ideas in this community and look forward to your response!

Thank you

Hello everyone, I've been looking around for a while on the web on how to make your own invitations and programs for a wedding, but I havent found anything good yet. I'm getting married next year and I've been wanting to really make my programs (and invitations if it's easy) personalized. Does anyone have any ideas on how to do it? I've seen some papers where people glue? flower petals or those funky dried skeleton leaves... How do you do it?
I like in St. Paul Minnesota so if anyone has reccomendation on a good store with those types of supplies, or a store that offers classes on these types of things let me know. Has anyone tried anythin glike that ever? Or am I over my head thinking that i can manage making all of this myself?

thank you so much for your help
I love this community!!!

Any ideas or links on making extra-large DIY lunchbags? I'd like it to be roomy because I haul a ton of stuff to work for my lunches. I've read some ideas on using oilcloth, but don't know how easy it is to sew with this material.

You guys are great! Thanks.

Hello ladies (and gents?) I have 2 items that I'd like to ask you're advice on.

1. I want to make a big mobile with origami hanging from it and I was hoping that you could suggest what sort of materials I might use for the um stick parts that would look good. Also I've never made one before and so is there anything I should know?

2. I picked up a slough of shells while in Florida last week and I want to make some jewelry out of them but I don't know how I can put holes in them without breaking or cracking them. Any suggestions?

You are all very wonderful, thank you in advance.

xoxo

i'm flying on the first...do you think they'll let me take my metal knitting needles on the airplane, or will i have to check my bags just to take them along?

A couple days ago [livejournal.com profile] altamira16 posted pictures of some beaded flowers she had made which were absolutely gorgeous. It was weird too, because the day before I had received my winter issue of Martha Stewart Weddings and she had a piece in there about beaded bouquets. I promised [livejournal.com profile] altamira16 that I would scan the pictures and patterns from the magazine, so here they are.

I am using LJ cut as they are fairly large images; I tried to make them as small as possible, but I couldn't make them too tiny or you wouldn't be able to read the instructions.

If you have a slow connection, it might take a while for everything to load. )

I've like 5 japanese magazines with awesome life size patterns [and some that you have to draw youself ] for making everything from bags to jackets. I really want to make a white high collar jacket / top to wear , since i've the pattern for it but I've no idea what fabric to use. It can't be too warm , since I'm staying in singapore where it's hot all the time. And it must to feel too stiff like formal jackets but still look stiff enough. I can't read japanese so I had no idea whether they had recommended what material to use. Someone help me out? Thanks!

I was watching Christopher Lowell (sp?) today and he had a great inexpensive hanging lamp idea, that is going to sound crazy at first but it did look really great.
So you take one of those globe ceiling lamps, very 70ish and you just glue Styrofoam cups all over it. It looks very expensive when you are done and you can't tell they are cups.
I thought I would pass it on, I might make it I don't know yet.

Someone here was asking about what to do with the slipcovers from records after you make them into bowls. Check out these bags on uncommongoods.com. I bet they're pretty easy to make...

EDIT: ok, I'm lj-cutting the link because apparently it's messing up friend's pages. sorry,

Hey, girls!

I've got a dilemma and I'm hoping someone will have a solution for me.

I've got this beautiful transparent blue glass bowl. It's sort of wavy, and on its underside, it's got a beautiful silver foil technique done on it that makes it looks really cool from the top. The only problem is, the foil started to scratch off, and now about half of the bowl has foil on it. I'm trying to get ALL of the foil off, so that at least I can use it as just a bowl.

Has anyone ever used any kind of solvent to remove foil? It almost seems to have a plasticized texture to it, so I'm not sure if it's legit foil or not. I've tried rubbing alcohol, paint thinner, and turpentine, and nothing works. Scratching it off isn't an option, either, because the bowl is quite bumpy near the bottom and it doesn't flake off like at the top.

Help!

Sara :)

Just a note for you sewing crafty people:

On Wednesday, the 1st, Joann's is going to have all Simplicity patterns for 99 cents, at least my (semi) local store is. You can check the flier for your local store (http://specials.joann.com/fsi.asp?sesid=146129849&refid=&waid=&lci=31289) to see if they're doing it there. I've noticed a lot of people posted that they got machines for christmas and this is a great way to stock up on a bunch of patterns for really cheap.

yay for me

i was going to decoupage my aunt, from hondoras, a little box to keep all her things in to remind her of home, but i had no pictures of hondoras. sooo i was walkign around michaels and i found this pictures. 11x14 with pics and sayings. i got one that says breathe like 6 times in different shades of gray. and i decoupaged all these inspirational things on it. its cute. it has some glitches. ahha bumps in the paper but my fav quote on it is "with your eyes wide open, the soul can not hide"

my mom helped me. i got one that says "friendship isnt a big thing, its a million little things" and it has a purple flower..so i may decoupage flowers on it and her name.

so proud of me lol
