where can I find an online store or something that sells old, worn out, unwanted, used, hardcover books? I tried searching half.com and mysimon.com but I don't recieve very good results on searching "random used books" or something similar...they only find specific ones. I don't care what kind of book it is as long as it is hardcover and thisclose to being chucked in the trash...I would feel bad using a new and often-read book.

thank you!!

There is a pattern in the current issue you can use, but it does not say you have to use the pattern listed, in fact this point is not overly clear. The instructions read: To get you started we have included a pattern and set of directions by Lynne Sward. Of course you can use any method you wish, as longs as your doll is two sided." I can scan and email the pattern to anyone who wants to use it, (in my opinion it is rather oddly shaped/unattractive/a very simple form with a dress outline to it's shape and sorta triangular hands).
It goes on to say: "Design both sides of your doll to reflect your egos (or dreamt up personas), and submit your finished art doll to Quilting Arts Magazine for possible inclusion in our summer 2003 issue. (Apparently the email notice I got on this contest was incorrect and the actual doll you make must be sent in, I was originally told to send a photo.) Dolls should be no smaller than 6" and no larger than 12". A brief description of your doll, including your inspiration, materials, and methods used for the piece should be attached. Please include a SASE for returning materials and mail to Quilting Arts Magazine, ATTN: Art Doll Challenge, PO box 685, Stow, MA 01775. Deadline for receipt of entries is March 1st, 2003, they will be returned no later than June 1st 2003.
I have emailed them to get a clarification as to whether or not you have to use their general doll pattern, and are simply limited to resizing it, or whether a original doll style between 6-12" is okay. I read the directions both ways. I'll post the clarifying info when I get a reply.

I know some people are getting annoyed with how-to questions, but a girlfriend of mine and I were trying to figure out how to make those photographic lampshades. You know, the ones that are squarish and each side is a black and white photo and then the sides are laced up with lanyard-esque material? We found this pen at a rubber stamping store that will transfer a photocopied image onto paper, but the woman at the store couldn't tell us if it would work on vellum. I'm not even sure vellum is the right material, actually, because I seem to recall the panels feeling thicker, like they'd been shellacked in some way. I checked online but could only find instructions for ones made with images photocopied directly onto the vellum.

Anyone got any good ideas?

Thanks!

Does anyone know of any place online that has patterns or instructions for making a messenger style bookbag? I have tried my local craft store and sewing store, and I haven't had any luck. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

I am absolutely in love with candles, but work on a limited budget. A few weeks ago I picked up a couple of pillar candles at AC Moore for about $.99 a piece and a roll of silver star garland (also usually about $.99 for 25ft). I wrapped a little garland around the base of the candle and for a burn plate, I used a CD--excellent way to dispose of those AOL-type CDs that are always being sent in the mail. I just flipped it over, so the printed part of the CD didn't show and I had a really pretty centerpiece for under $5.

Hiya! I believe this is my first post here. I am pretty sure I got this idea on the advice of someone on the glitter forum over at getcrafty. I have had several roses bunched up with a ribbon on my wall for years that have quite a bit of sentimental meaning to me. They were getting dusty and falling to bits in the midst of a move so I decided to do this with the petals.

Michaels had the clear glass balls for 50 cents apiece a couple of weeks ago. I think the next time I do something like this, I'll probably bring the flowers into the bathroom during a shower so they aren't quite so dry and fragile, but I was still able to salvage about 2/3 of them by carefully pulling them off the flower and rolling them lengthwise to slip them in the ball.

Okay, where's the lightbulb vase post, and did anyone ever figure out how to properly remove the innards? I really want to make one...

whew! my vacation is almost over...i'm finally back at my apartment and i'm in the process of organizing and putting away all of my goodies.

i'm not sure if this is considered crafty but perhaps more practical? but i thought i'd share anyways because some of you may be in a similar situation. [aka-your apartment looks like a bomb went off in it]

my new theme for 2003 is going to be complete compact organization and space saving.

I want to make these. Where could I obtain these dried herbs, perchance?
Also, where could I get essential oils? I've been wondering for so long.
[identity profile] kimmercake.livejournal.com
ok one more.
and maybe this one is even more crafty.
[note: this is all going along with my space svaing and recycling 2003 resolution theme]

but here goes:
in my building each apartment gets their own circuit breaker box. unfortunately mine has to be right in the main hallway so it is like the first thing EVERYONE sees when they come in. [which drives me insane]

i was thinking of making a curtain for it but i dont wanna draw too much attention or make it to look too gaudy.

check it out, it's hideous:

any help!? i'll give you my right kidney!

I found this while flipping through the latest Ballard Designs catlogue. This would be SO easy to reproduce WITHOUT the stiff $288.00 price tag.

As the description says:

What better place to post your notes than this elegant corkboard covered in them? Antiqued reproduction sheet music is decoupaged over cork and held in a lovely, gold composition frame.

I'm sure you can find old sheet music at thrift stores. If not... use new ones and tea stain them. Decoupage them over cork board (found at most craft stores) and frame it with an interesting from found at thrift stores. I estimate you could make it for under $20 with the right findings.

I will definitely be trying this out. I'll be sure to post pics when it's finished!

some brilliant individual made pins from marbles. this inspired me. i can't make them fast enough for people, i've already given away half of what i made, or strewn them on my messenger bag and leather jackets.

big pic, not the pick of the litter, but you get the idea )

on account of the oh so fun to hate martha stewart, i am making a shower curtain for myself out of terry cloth bath towels. so i was looking up stuff about shower curtains to buy funky rings to put them on and i found these lovely little trinkets.

years ago an ex boyfriend left me with his marble collection and i've been trying to make things out of them for years. now i know just what to make.

My latest project was a marble chainmail key chain. I made the mistake of looking in toy departments for good old fashioned marbles but could find none, so I ended up getting some little blue ones from the floral department. I couldn't seem to get either a good pic with the digital cam or a good scan - so just imagine it looks something like a cross between the two images *grin*
