Quilting Arts Magazine is holding an art doll contest. Is anyone interested in the details? No cash prizes, but your art doll does get featured in their Summer 2003 magazine if you win or become a runner up, seems like a great way to bring attention to your art skills. I think it would be kinda cool if several of us submitted dolls and one of us won... might bring some attention to this community and to LJ as well. I'd be happy to post the details for the contest if anyone wants to enter. They offer a simple doll pattern in the Winter 2002 issue, you can design and or embellish it anyway you want...photo transfers, stamping, embroidery, applique, etc. Both sides must be designed. You send in pics and directions and an outline of what inspired your design, but not your actual doll. (Also crossposted to craftypros)

How would I go about sewing cotton fabric to a knitted piece? Specifically, I want to knit myself a bag and line it with this cute fabric I bought.

I assume this would have to be hand sewn. Does anyone have any other tips? Is this even possible?
[identity profile] 19.livejournal.com
This isn't really a crafty question, rather a "is this possible" question. I went out for Tiny Tinis (tiny martinis) yesterday. I had an absolutely delicious cherry one. All of the ingredients were relatively easy to get ahold of, cherry pucker, triple sec, cherry juice. The one I have the question about is cherry infused vodka. I wonder if I could make my own cherry infused vodka, sort of like a flavored vinegar, or that it would be too expensive/impossible, and I would have to find a cherry vodka already for sale. What do you guys think?

I saw an ashtray and small purse made out of a beer can in a store the other day and thought that was too groovy. Anyone ever see that before? I wonder how they did it.

I did this just the other day for a friend. She bought two flat sheets for her bed (queen size), and I stitched them together on all three sides except for the bottom, which I left open. Inside the comforter cover, I stitched three 15" pieces of bias tape along the top seam, two in the corners, and one in the middle. On her comforter, I stitched another three, so she could tie them together and the comforter wouldn't slip down. At the bottom edge, which I'd left open, I stitched on 12 bias tape ties, 6 on each side, so she could close it. Matching pillow cases were made with the leftovers (two queen sized pillow cases, and two white pillow cases with just a strip of fabric all around by the opening.) It was great, and she only ended up paying $30 for everything. Her husband, who hates flowery anything, even liked it! I think I'm going to be making one for myself next time. :D

Hi, I'm new to the community and I was wondering if anyone knew where I could specifically purchase the moldable plastic from Amaco called Friendly Plastic. Aparently this plastic can be placed into warm water to soften, molded, and submerged into cold water to harden. They are sold by the stick or even in moldable pellet-form.

I checked Michaels today with no luck and am wondering if they carry this product at hardware stores. Has anyone found it at retailers besides online?

Also, would Friendly Plastic hold up with items that are larger than jewelry, such as creating a figure or statue? And is it easier to work with than Sculpey (made by Amaco, as well)?

Thanks!

Winecharms

I got sick of seeing all these winecharm sets at the store for like $15 that weren't really that cute, so I decided to make my own. Mine ended up costing $10, but I used more expensive charms and I ended up really liking them. Here they are...

(I woulda posted these before the new year, but I had yet to acquire my handy-dandy new digital camera.) Here are a couple things I made for The Boyfriend for Christmas: a bottle cap picture frame and an LP clock )

Since there has been some creative ideas lacking.... I think it'd be a neat idea to make your own cloth napkins... or more like buy some plain ones and decorate them as you want, like stencil something on them with fabric paint or iron-on transfers or something...

I know it'd be cool for my loft when i get it done to have khaki ones with record iron-ons for a corner because my place is going to be done in red, black, and tan colors and white. It's gonna be awesome :-)

A while back, I posted a photo of these beaded candlesticks that I made for my mom, for Hanukkah. Someone asked me how I made them, but I never got around to answering. For that person, and anyone else who is interesting, here is how I made them... )

I got 3 really gorgeous sweaters from my Mom for Christmas. Perfect color, perfect weight... only thing is, they all have these huge, drapey, strangle-me-to-death turtlenecks, which I HATE!!! And I so want to wear the sweaters...

Does anyone have any experience with de-necking sweaters? I mean, I have no neck, anyway, so I'm peeking out of the tops of these sweaters like the dude from "Fat Albert..." But I love the knits...

Ideas?

i like to hand sew my clothes, whether its pants or dresses, the like, but after sewing for like years, i've finally started reading sewing books and i learned about this amazing machine called a serger. are they expensive, are they like rare, can anyone just buy a sewing machine that makes buttonholes? tell me more!

also, what's cooler to you guys? handsewn clothes made with love, or clothes mechanically done on a sewing machine? i'm kind of torn at this point, and so are most of my clothes, lol.

also, my mother got me one of those cheapo sewing machines, and sadly enough, i'm having huge problems threading the damn thing. any tips?
