inspired my [livejournal.com profile] sharmelon's and [livejournal.com profile] bjorkdoll's lovely hats i had a go at making my own version.

i changed a few things. made sort of floppy side things to the side and of course happy pom poms. my boy says it looks like floppy dog ears but i think he is just jealous that he does not have a silly pink hat.

all done in single crochet with a k hook with red hearts baby clouds. its just a giant rectangle with some increases towards the middle and the side seems stitched up.

Inspiration just hit......
though if someone else has already had this idea on here, please ignore
I've seen these little picture frame lockets at Michael's near the scrap booking sections for months now, but couldn't think of a good idea of what to do with them. Then it hit me this morning. Finger Print lockets!
What a perfect Mother's day gift, or baby shower gift......
Get a small locket, and iinstead of putting a picture of the child in it, make a finger print spot on it. Just take a stamp pad, press their fingeron the pad, then onto a piece of paper the size of the locket, and wa-la! Cut the paper to fit the locket and hang from a necklace......
Or, for the expecting mother, wrap a small stamp pad, locket, and necklace in a nice bag and let her do it.

Would also make a wonderful gift for the grandparents.......

Ok, I really really want to make a sock monkey, but you can't get the socks here in NZ. I tried to order off a bunch of sites on the internet, but they either don't ship overseas, or they ship UPS which they informed me would cost $75. I don't want to make a sock monkey that much, but I would like to make one!

So anyway, if someone has access to the socks, I'm willing to trade anything of around the same value. I don't really own anything all that interesting to trade, but I could go and buy something - I can get most craft supplies, beads, or maybe something uniquely New Zealand (and crafty or not), you let me know. Or I could sew something, like a jeans pocket bag or whatever. Maybe you can get socks, but don't have access to something YOU really want.

And so as not to make this just a trade post, here's what I'm making for my boyfriend for our anniversary: )

One bracelet I made, one bracelet I reconstructed.

And, by the way, does anyone know where to get those picture beads you can see on the second bracelet? Not necessarily those exactly, just beads with pictures on them like that. I only have a few, all from bracelets I bought cheap and reconstructed.

i'd like to learn to knit [again, mehe...i used to be able to about 10 years ago].

just need to know what needles are best to start off with. i can get them second hand from a charity shop, but if they're the wrong type of needles for a beginner, then there's no point in getting them! also, wool, i'll probably just start off by making a scarf. what type of wool do i need, or doesn't it matter?

please bear in mind that i live in the UK, so please don't mention walmart or anything, as it means nothing to me!

thanks for any help you guys give me :)

While in the mall the other day i saw little girls knit ponchos at Baby Gap for around $40.00. First thing i though to myself was, "Self? You could make that!"
So i made my own version for my 6 month old, Genevieve.

Hi! I am new. I just joined. I am just now starting to get those negative voices out of my head that say I can't be creative and allowing myself to start getting crafty. It is my hope that seeing all of your projects will inspire me. I want to create but I don't even know where to begin. Any suggestions for a beginner?

in other news.. i am a big zine freak!

Currently I am launching a zine distro called Powderbox. The website will be up soon, i am currently having it made by a friend of mine. What I am looking for is craftygrrls who might be interested in selling some of there crafts through the distro. If this interests you email me at:

thanks!

JESSICA: sixteen. singapore. newbie here.

I'm doing a tie-dye project for my O levels. Tt's a major examination that we have to undertake before we can receive tertiary eeducation.

I spent about 18 hours over a period of three days cutting & unpicking the knots that I've sewn. The final product below (click on image to enlarge):

Yeah as you can see the quality is not that good. Colours are white, pink, purple and black. I started out with a white cloth, drew on the designs, and stiched white thread onto the composition.

To dye, we had to boil water, add a lil salt (any kind), and mix it with the dye. The cloth had to be sumberged for approximately 10 minutes. At least long enough to make sure that the cloth had absorbed the colour properly.

To dry, we had to roll it dry with newspapers. It was a process that used too much strength & time and produced too little results. I cheated & blew it with a hair dryer while watching the telly :P

Then there was preserving. That's when we tie raffia strings around certain clumps to preserve the colour. In my case, pink. The dying + drying + preserving process was repeated with the second colour.

Black was the final colour. When it was done, I had to remove the strings & unpick the knots. Unpicking the knots alone took me 18 hours. The sewing costed me 25hours. Etc etc. I think the whole process took around 50 hours- spreaded over a period of few months, cos I was lazy. But I had to rush because we're supposed to hand in tomorrow.

I made this from a size 18 (UK sizes) or 20 (USA sizes) T-shirt, which I loved the pattern on and had to use!!
Sooo.... I took it in at the sides, added some black ribbon/lace stretchy stuff to the arms, and the bottom slits and also the line down the middle.
At first I was going to make it in an 80's off the shoulder style, but then I changed my mind after getting fed up of seeing this in the shops.
Instead, I took inspiration from chinese/japanese clothing and also the constrast 60's clothing with giant buttons that's popular over here at the mo! :-)
here's how it ended up. Apologies for the bad photos! It was hard to do!!

More pics under the cut. Also a better idea of the colour!!!

I have a pair of converse whose fabric is entirely ripped/destroyed around the heal and ankle area and they look disgusting, but the soles of the shoes are perfectly fine. Is there any way I can somehow sew another type of fabric onto the entire shoe to cover up the old fabric?

Thank you to all those who helped me out with my last question about knitting. I apparently do stockinette most of the time.

I have been attempting ribbing. K1,p1...repeat. But for some reason when I attempt this the working yarn getting are wrapped up and weird and bumpy. What am I doing wrong?

Help!!

I hope I'm not overposting, but I thought I would share how I made over my toilet seat. I was inspired by KiKi's Kitsch Corner and her wonderful toilet seats, but I thought I could make that. So I did, basically.
