just out of curiosity...

i enjoy knitting, but frankly i end up getting extremely pissed off that things take so long, and i abandon every project when i've only finished about a third of it. it seems the only things i actually finish are scarves and hats.

does anyone have any experience with one of those "knitting machines"? i've seen them for around a hundred bucks, and i'm curious as to how useful they actually are: can you do specialty stitches with them, different types of yarn, etc...

just thought i'd ask!

cross-posted a bit...sorry.

Hey! My name is Stamatia, and I just found this community tonight, which looks really awesome...I tat, knit, crochet, do beadwork, etc. I've also created an LJ community for tatting, [livejournal.com profile] tatting (what an original name, eh?). I just figured there's a knitting comm, and a crochet comm...why not tatting? It's a very under-appreciated art and it's time it got some attention! And even if you don't know what it is there's no harm in learning about it, is there? I could always post some how-to stuff, and there's lots of links out there...

Anyways, I hope you'll stop by and have a look. Thanks :)

P.S. I hope this isn't off-topic or anything. I know there are tatters in here! I've read the tatting entry! ;)

(cross-posted to a couple of other comms that actually know what tatting is).

I've never worked with eyelash yarn before, and, um...I'm excited, but it's really hairy and...uh...I can't figure out how to find the end so it pulls out of the middle like a regular skein. Or will it do that?

I guess my actual question is: Hey, you smart people who've used this stuff before...did you grab the outside end and unroll it all and hope for the best? Did you reroll it into a ball? Or is there some magical way to dig out the inside end without pulling all the skein guts out?

I was really excited about making these Thing one and THing two shirts for my two nieces Ava and Grace, and I worked really hard on them. But it took so many coats of white to be opaque that they're really stiff - too stiff, I think, to be comfortable to wear! I used screen printing paint...is there anything that can be done to make them more flexible? Will washing help?

Alternatively, what kind of WHITE paint could I use that wouldn't end up needing so many coats and being stiff? I've used fabric paints etc., but not in white - and I worry that I'd have the same problem.

OR...the printable transfers for dark fabric - does white turn out white on those?

My sewing machine is broken, or I'd make the circles on white fabric and sew them on...

any help for a broken-hearted aunty?

Yeah, so I went crazy and did all these artsy things over the weekend, but unfortunately I left the unedible things at Josh's house, but behind the cut you can see the edible beautiful things that I made. =)

Made these for my daughters' xmas party exchange at school. First design was based on one in Wrapped Wire Attire by Katie Hacker. Second one was based on pattern in Coiled & Curled Wire Jewelry by Crafts Galore.

Hi guys,

I was just going through past craft project pics and thought I'd post these....very inexpensive and lots of fun. The kids LOVED them, and I got many orders for the superheroes from the teachers at school, and taught the scouts how to make them as well!

The larger Raggedy Ann is one that is cut and jointed, so she moves! Of course, use your imagination ;) It's addictive.

Onto the Clothespin Dolls! Three pictures )

at around 1:00 in the morning i figured out what i could make for my best friend's mom: a jornal jar. (for more info on this go to organizedchristmas.com) i plan on making her a journal to go with it. i also found out that she use to write poetry a lot, so i came up with another idea: a poetry jar. but i'm not quite sure how to go about that. i was thinking of making my own magnetic poetry and just putting it in a jar. or, instead of the words being on maganetic backing, just have them on regular slips of paper. that way she can paste the poems she makes up in her journal. which sounds better? any better ideas? also, anyone know of a site that has ready-made poetry lists/words/pharses?

thanks as always!

ok, so i made my first set of marble magnets last night (SO FUN!). anyway, i've decided to make them as gifts for a lot of people. but I need containers. I don't use altoids, so I don't have any tins and don't really want to go buy 5 tins just to dump out the mints. AOL doesn't send the tins to my area, so I am at a loss. What else can I package the magnets in?

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. :) And you girls have certainly been an inspiration to me this holiday season!!!

ookay.

so i have a question. if i wanted to stich on a felt applique to like those stretchy mittens. would that work? because i don't want them to rip off or anything.. yah. thanks.

cause i saw these: http://www.cutxpaste.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=1&products_id=227 at cutxpaste.com. but that may be because they're not like those magic stretch ones? i don't know. thanks!

is there any way to make yarn softer? i've made a few scarves but they're itchy as hell when i try to wear them. any ideas?
[identity profile] missy-sue.livejournal.com
I have an entire co-ed fraternity that's willing to pay me to make them crocheted stocking caps. I can't seem to find a pattern anywhere (I found one for knitting, though). I could probably make one up, but I'm really not interested in screwing them up since I'm being paid to do them.

Does anyone know where I could find a pattern?

Thanks!

I want to get my friend a subscription to ready made for christmas, and remember that a while ago there was a code to enter to get a subscription for $10 (or something insanely affordable like that).

Does anyone know if there is such a code still in circulation?

i need some help with this journal. im going to make a new cover for one. i am planning on writing out song lyrics to a song in all different kinds of writing, printing, cursive, all that good stuff, then cutting each word out and putting it on the cover.
i dont know what i should use to put the words on the journal. glue? if so, what kind? would tape be easier? then what should i use to go over it all so it wont mess up?

so please help me out! you girls are far craftier then i! also if you have any other ideas of something to make, please let me know.

Hey guys. My computer's not operational right now, so I'm using my dads'. I had the link for the microwave cakes in a mug post in my favorites, but I can't acces it right now. I have all my materials together and want to start making these. I've checked around the memories and looked back a good couple of weeks without any luck. Can anyone point me in the right direction, pleeease?

thanks!

i've searched the FAQ's and no luck. Does anyone have any creative ways of wrapping/packaging gifts?

i'm making my boyfriend a blanket out of this material. because i am nerdy. and he likes pirates.

& of course, some marble magnets. they're about the size of quarters.

also, i wanted to make some homemade lip gloss for gifts, but i cannot seem to find any of the ingredients (carrier oil, beeswax) ... well, i found beeswax in like a three pound block, but i certainly do not need that much. what kind of stores carry the supplies?

Here's a quick question from someone considering selling their crocheted creations online (that would be me)--

For those of you that have sold your stuff online in venues other than eBay, how have you managed payment? I am thinking that cash is the easiest way, and that I would just require payment before I ship the item-- what do you all think about that? And what do you think about checks and money orders? I basically would just love any hints and tips and advice you can give me about this.

Thanks so much!

I've been knitting for a couple of months now, but I've been fortunate enough to have been given some very nice, high-end yarn. I've used a lot of it, however, and as a broke college student, it was time to whip out the Wal-Mart brand yarn and aluminum needles. I'm calling it the 'Skinny Skully Scarf,' and I'll post instructions, if there's any interest.

Hiya.
I've done lots of silk screening using various methods - filler, tape, drawing fluid etc., but I want to do a really complicated image - a brass rubbing onto a scarf - for my mom. The kit i bought ages ago has the photo emulsion and sensitizer, but reading the instructions, it seems like getting the light exposure right is a pain. I don't have a light box, so I'd be using a regular lamp.

Has anyone here done this? Was it really hard to get right? Or did it go pretty easily? (If it takes many attempts, I'll learn to do it later, and try and use a screen filler method. Xmas frustration is running high! :) )

Okay, so I had this small whitman's sampler tin- its just like the hinged altoid tins but it's deeper. Anyway, so I am making a thing for my bf, and I stuck images clipped out of victoria's secret all over it, but now it is very hard to close and even harder to open (because I decoupaged the sides completely)

Is there a way I can fix this or do I just have to deal with it? Once i had to pull so hard to open it that the top of the tin came off the little hinges O_O

I really can't scrap the project because I don't have another catalog with the same images in it (these were PERFECT) so I'd really like to know if I'm just going to have to "deal" or if mayyybe there's a way to fix it.

Oh, also, I used Plaid "Royal Coat" decoupage finish for it, if that makes a difference.

I have a couple of questions.. I'd really appreciate it if anyone could help me out. :)

* Is it possible to sew a button-hole (or well, the thing around it) even if you don't have that special "button-hole-thing" on your sewing machine? (I'm sure it's possible, but I've never seen anyone do it.) If so, how would I do that?

* Those bags that you can heat up (or cool down).. I read a post a couple of weeks ago that said not to use rice because it wouldn't really smell nice when they were heated up.. What would you suggest filling them with that would make them smell nice?

* That white, sugary, crispy thing (I don't know the English word..) that you decorate ginger-bread with.. Does anyone have a kick-ass recipe they'd like to share?
