Christmas Stockings
Dec. 17th, 2003 09:51 amI decided that my husband and I needed new stockings for Christmas this year, so this si what I came up with. I'm really proud of them because I came up with the design free-hand. Isn't it awesome when you picture something to make in your head and it turns out exactly like you pictured it? It doesn't happen that often, but I'm so excited when it does.

crochet - many apologies if you see it twice.
I finally had a chance to see one of those awesome knitted scarves today - one that's made of eyelash yarn on huge needles and ends up being a tube that's so stretchy you can wear it as a tube top if you were so inclined. I'm not all that great at knitting, though I know enough to be able to make one, but I was wondering if the same thing would work with crochet, if I used a Q hook? Or would the double crochet end up being not as stretchy?
EDITED TO ADD: Here is a picture and a bit more information on them. I guess they're called Magic Scarves. They're becoming pretty popular, and I've seen them being sold for way too much money. I'd rather try crocheting one myself, if it's even possible to crochet something like that!

I'm going to be making my homemade spaghetti sauce for a few "dinner-in-a-basket" gifts; is there a specific method to jar the sauce so that it stays fresh for a good amount of time?
Thanks!

Dec. 17th, 2003 11:47 amI'm about to ask one of the most important questions of my life.
Seriously.
Disorganization (as with most artists) is my weakest point.
And it's getting to the point where it takes me an hour to get all of my supplies together from around the house before I begin a project.
I'm planning on moving in the next couple weeks, and besides my room and a small storage space, I won't be able to keep my sewing supplies just anywhere.
Now for the meat of the question: HOW IN GOD'S NAME DO YOU KEEP YOUR SEWING/CRAFT SUPPLIES ORGANIZED?!
I have so many little tools and scraps of fabric and glues and thread and things that I have NO idea what to do with myself.
IF ANY OF YOU HAVE ANY TIPS, even with just very small, specific things, please tell me. Even if it's just where you stick your pushpins. ANY help is appreciated.
Thank you! You are all amazing. <3

Knitted Bottle/Can covers?
Dec. 17th, 2003 12:07 pmHas anyone ever seen a pattern for a knitted can or bottle cover. You know, a kind of tube shape that you slip over the bottle can so your hands don't get cold.
Or any other suggestions for making one, not necessarily knitted would be great.

I was wondering if any of you ladies knew of some beanie patterns (for crochet) that use red heart super saver yarn. I tried the one pattern that I had and then tried just doing free form but... can't seem to get the beanie to take shape using this yarn. Thanks for the help in advance. :)

Dec. 17th, 2003 01:06 pmOH MY GOD, YOU PEOPLE ARE WONDERFUL!
Sorry to take up more room on your friends page,
but I just wanted to make sure everyone that commented saw this.
You have no idea how much I appreciate your help.
Organization has always been a crippling factor in my life,
but hopefully with your tips, I'll be able to actually make a career out of my sewing.
THANK YOU SO SO SO MUCH!
Keep up the good work.
I love you all. <3

Painting glass/plastic
Dec. 17th, 2003 01:54 pmI'd like to paint the words "YOU DRUNK I'M THINK, DON'T YOU?" onto a tankard for a Terry Pratchett fan friend of mine. I guess plastic would be a better idea than glass, since we are, after all, college kids, and rooms tend to be messy and things tend to fall off shelves a lot. What medium do you suggest I use?
Also, does anyone in NYC know where I could get a tankard at a reasonable price?

Eyelets -> costs
Dec. 17th, 2003 02:54 pmSome of you might have read about me doing a summative project on a calendar on photoshop a while ago.
I'm more into the presentation of it then the actual photoshop and photographs part.
There're just so many ways to present it and it's going to be so much fun.
So I'm thinking of chaining the pictures together and punching the holes by eyelets.
I've never used eyelets before, but I've seen people use them in different project...especially in scrapbooking.
I was wondering the approximate costs (in canadian dollar would be superb) of a kit or whatever equipment I would need.
It'd just be really basic. The puncher and the eyelets. I don't know what else I exactly need. If you could help that'd be sweet. Thanks.

Print Gocco
Dec. 17th, 2003 02:55 pmDoes anyone have any experience with a Gocco? I'm getting married next year and want to make my own invitations, programs, stationary, napkins, etc. But I don't want to waste my money either. These things go for around 150-165 dollars for the small size. I'm mostly interested to know how easy it is to use and how good or bad the quality of the printing is.
Thanks for any information.

gift for someone I barely know?
Dec. 17th, 2003 03:06 pmWe're doing that frickin "secret santa" thing at work, and I'm told we're not supposed to spend more than $5. Well, screw that. If I find something for her that I think she'll like and it costs me more than $5, so be it!
But, I don't have a clue what to give her! She's Russian, and doesn't speak a lot of English, so our conversations have been pretty limited. I don't know much about her at all. I know she had polio as a child and that she likes a certain brand of leave-in conditioner. Yeah. I need help.
The best part is that I was just told this morning that we're exchanging gifts TOMORROW. I thought we were doing it next Tuesday, so I was counting on the weekend. Now I'm pressed for time, and it's all snowy and pooey outside today so I'm not too keen on running all over town looking for a gift!
HELP??
Thanks in advance...

making notepads
Dec. 17th, 2003 03:59 pmI am getting gifts together for a gift basket for my dad and I had a few questions. First, any suggestions would be helpful. I bought him two cds he wanted, so I don't want to add any mixed cds (plus I gave him one as a secret santa gift). I was going to make some note pads (where you stack up paper and then put glue at the top, so it is like a scratch pad/note pad. I checked the memories, but couldn't find instructions. Does anyone know how well this works and what glue you would use. I also made him some marble magnets, but now I am at a loss of what to do. I am out of money and time is getting short. I also did a daily letter thing - I send him a letter each day until christmas that has a nice thought or sayig about life lessons, etc. The first letter let him know that all of the thoughts will solve a puzzle on christmas eve. The final letter he will get with his gift will say that all of these positive lessons are the gift he has given me - like a chicken soup for the soul type thing. So anyhting else that could go in the gift basket besides the standards usually posted (most of them are already being put in - lip balm, soap, coffee spoons)would be helpful. Thanks.
bottle cap crafts
Dec. 17th, 2003 03:59 pmDoes anyone have any ideas for crafty things to do with bottle caps? I have like 50 or so, colorful caps from Smirnoff bottles and such. I was going to decorate a picture frame with them, but I don't want to smash them flat, but if I don't I can't get them to stick. Anyway, if anyone has any cool and innovative bottle cap crafts, let me know! Thanks :)
I just came back from craft shopping. First I went to a craft shop. It's the only decent craft shop in a decent-sized city (Christchurch, NZ) so prices are pretty high. I got a 1L tin of resin for $32.50* (time to make more bracelets!) and then I stared longingly at the eyelets and associated tools. A small pack of eyelets, a hole punch and eyelet setter would have come to over $50, so I left it. Next stop: hardware shop for sandpaper and drill bits. What should I stumble across but an eyelet set! Eyelet tool (looks like a pair of pliers, punches holes and sets eyelets) and 100 eyelets (mixed pack of silver, gold and copper colours, all round) for $6.75. I am one happy crafter. Now my head is buzzing with all kinds of uses for these eyelets - uses I wouldn't even let myself consider before because the darn things were so expensive! Books, clothing... if anyone has any especially nifty uses for them let me know!
I also have a question. My boyfriend just doesn't "get" it. When I get him to cook, he's the kind who buys a jar of pasta sauce rather than spend 5 minutes making it from scratch. When I talk about crafts, he says "sounds like an awful lot of trouble to me". What's a nice, easy craft that would be appealing to boys and that we could do together? I know that there are some boys out there, maybe you can help me out. Hmm, there should really be a
craftboy community!
* Prices are in $NZ. Roughly halve it for $USD, bearing in mind that most things (not craft things) are cheaper here but we earn less.

Dec. 17th, 2003 04:46 pmMy mother's not home to ask about this, so I shall ask the rest of you. I seem to recall (but I might be retarded) using plastic coffee lids (from tins) in place of Shrinky Dink plastic.. Does anyone know the specifics, or know if I am even in the ballpark?
Yeah, I need help. I still haven't picked up a knitting kit by now, which I've been wanting to do, and I need something new to work on to keep me busy during the winter break. So, I'm going to probably crochet some more in tunisian/afghan stitch since I love the look.
There's directions on how to tunisian: knit stitch & tunisian: purl stitch though and I just can NOT for the life of me figure them out! Can anyone help me with this?

Dec. 17th, 2003 05:45 pmAs I'm am back in school this year, I have returned to being a poor student.
So, I'm making stuff for my family.
I decided to try my hand at etching.
I got the cream, and some random glass wares at a local kitchen store.
I knew what to do with the first one, but the rest I'm clueless on.
Suggestions would be appreciated! ( Images behind the cut :) )
And good luck to the rest of you on your holiday crafting. :)

I didn't want to add another help post regarding Christmas presents, but I am having trouble with a little gag gift project I can make for my mom. I was going to buy them both serious presents and then make some crafty things for them, but then my brothers asked me to join in with a trip for them. I still went ahead and made the gift for my dad.
It was supposed to be a Christmas ornament like the one someone posted about a few weeks ago that was inspired by A Christmas story. Then I went into Dollar Tree and found a nightlight with a lamp-style shade on it.
Add a cut offbrand barbie leg, some black fringe from Wal-Mart, the black doll shoe and some cut up fishnets later and I have A Christmas Story Leg Night Light!
But now I don't know what to make for my mom that would be so fun. I have made her hummingbird ornaments out of paper mache in the past and a beaded Dragonfly ornament, but those were more serious-typt gifts.
Here is what she likes: cooking and baking, sewing, bird-watching, some crafts, reading, flowers, gardening. I can't think of anything pop-culture that she likes the way that my dad loves A Christmas Story it is almost literally the only movie he watches. He just doesn't follow films well.
What fun item could I make for my mom? My budget is like 5 dollars.

i was a busy bee
Dec. 17th, 2003 06:06 pmi am making my boyfriend's extended family marble magnets that spell out the names of everyone in each family group and putting them in a box with the family name on the outside. (ie his uncle steve, aunt terry, and their son kyle, would all go in a box decorated to say 'mayans'). i couldn't figure out good boxes to do this with so instead i bought brown paper mache christmas tree shaped boxes, spray painted the top green, and gluegunned the shit out of them to make them look gaudy yet slightly tasteful.

Wisdom teeth
Dec. 17th, 2003 06:08 pmMy boyfriend is getting ALL 4 of his wisdom teeth pulled out on friday AND he has to be at work from 9pm-1am. I feel really bad for him and would love to make something for him.
Some info- We've been together for a year and a half, he's a big dork and loves to play video games. He also enjoys stuff like homestar runner & weebl and bob.
Any ideas?

Dec. 17th, 2003 06:18 pmHi grrrls
Here's yet another what-can-I-make-him-her-it-for-Christmas question. Sorry.
BUT. My delicious girlfriend is a medical student and I want to make her something doctory. But, like, fun. I especially like sewing but I'm open to all ideas. I thought about embroidering a tshirt so it looks like she has a stethescope around her neck, but then I remembered she is not as geeky as me.
Thankyou in advance, dears,
Kathleen

ps. She isn't a girly girl, so wouldn't like an appliqued skirt or anything like that.

Dec. 17th, 2003 06:50 pmHi Crafty Girls,
I just finished my christmas present for my mom & I'm really excited because I think it turned out really good and I am also just relieved that it's finished. It is a Jiffy Stitchery "gallery crewel" kit - the background water color painting is stamped onto the fabric & the roses, leaves, dogs noses & eyes & some fur is done with embroidery stitches. It is my first (& last!) stamped project, it's not really my style, and I found it really hard on my eyes. It took about 20 hours from start to finish & is 5 x 7. Total cost including the frame was $25.

Beading a pet collar
Dec. 17th, 2003 07:59 pmIs it safe to bead a pet's collar? Tonight at Walmart I bought a small cat collar for my little baby Bonnie, a Boston Terrier (she's REALLY little) with the intention to bead it and make her a stylish little collar and maybe make my other dogs Charlie and Dash jealous, heh. What would be the best way to do this, if it's possible? I have "invisible thread" and E beads, but is this a good size? Maybe seed beads would be better? Should I go in rows and pass through the nylon each time, or go up and down and do the beads in a sequin fashion?
Help, please!

Dec. 17th, 2003 09:19 pmhi! i'm heather. i'm new. and i am a crafty girl alright!...i sew a lot. i have this thing about making purses and bags. i design a new one almost every day. watch out vera bradley and kate spade! ;) and if i'm not making a purse, i'm usually quilting. or at the fabric store.
so, i searched the FAQ for something related to my question, but didn't find anything...it's a bit random, but i thought if i'd be able to find the answer anyplace, it would be here. alright my question: i have a pair of old, faded jeans, and i wanted to make them like the "dirty" yellowing kinda jeans that look vintage. i bought some denim blue rit dye, dyed them, and now they're pretty dark. does anyone know if they will come out "vintage" if i dye them yellow now? common sense tells me that they will probably end up green if i try that. if yellow dye isn't the right way to go about it, what is? well, short of taking them outside and dragging them thru mud. ;)
thanks so much ahead of time!...and i'm glad to find such an active, creative community!

what to do with a knitting spool?
Dec. 17th, 2003 09:36 pmSo I went out to hobby lobby tonight with the intention of buying some circular magnets for my marble magnets....
One hour and $25 later (I bought yarn and stencils and t-shirts...), I found myself with Clover's Wonder Knitter (http://www.worldknit.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=1&Product_Code=bry_3101&Category_Code=k_g) a knitting spool similar to the one below, only with more fancy gadgets.

Anyway, what kinds of things can you make with these? And how? Also, what method of knitting do you recommend on this?

I'm finding it mildly amusing for the spool to "poo" out a cord, but I don't want to end up with 10 feet of poo and no constructive ideas. :)
