Jan. 12th, 2004 08:36 amcrochet question!
in a pattern for a hat, for example, the first instruction is to chain and slip stitch. which i understand. and then it says to crochet in a ring. does that mean inside the ring you just made or outside? and if it's inside, then how do you get back to the outside again?

my 3 year anniversary is this wednesday and i want to make something for my boyfriend, but i have no clue what to make! i was planning on giving him an altered book i've been working on, but it won't be ready in time. any ideas? im low on cash; all i have is 6 bucks and 8 dollars left on a gift card to barnes and nobles. thanks for any suggestions!
hi, i know there are other sites and whatnot, but since everyone here is so clever, i thought i'd ask here. and for some reason, i couldn't pull up memories to check if this had already been discussed.
that aside, any ideas on unique, but inexpensive, wedding favors? i'm tired of the typical m n m or bubbles idea. besides, they are both things that don't mean much and don't last. and i certainly don't mind making things!
thanks :]

chicago crafters
Jan. 12th, 2004 02:41 pmtwo things!
1. does anyone know of a gooood and affordable junk store? i'm so lost since creative reuse closed down... or have they reopened somewhere and i'm just out of the loop?
(i'm looking for some scrap metal, old wooden boxes, and just fun junk to sift through that isn't overpriced.)
2. maybe a wee bit off topic, but is there a chicago stitch-n-bitch that meets somewhat regularly, or at all in the near future? learning to knit is on my things-to-do list.
thanks duders.

Jan. 12th, 2004 02:58 pmThe FAQ seems to be having issues so I'll just ask. Does anyone know of any affordable place online to order a custom rubber stamp? All I want is 1 word of 6 letters on the thing. I found 1 place that will charge about $15 to make it. This sounds reasonable but I figured I should ask around first.
How this relates to a craft is that I'm making those star boxes (Starbucks gift card kind) as favor boxes for my wedding (next december, doing it way early but I don't want to find myself with no time later) and I'm going to stamp our last name on them. So I would like a stamp made for that purpose.
So any advice?
Thanks!

Jan. 12th, 2004 03:39 pmHere's the instructions for the WRIST WARMERS. I don't know how to explain crocheting too well, so if anyone can make this more clear, please feel free.
First, chain a long enough chain to wrap around your forearm. I did 27, but it's big on me. Make into a circle using a slip stitch, then double crochet all the way around (to set up a double crochet, chain 3 after the slip stitch). I crocheted 10 rows of double. (Crocheting in a circle: first go around one way, join up with the beginning of the row, chain 3, then back around the other way. Alternating directions is important so the seam is straight.) You can put stripes in anywhere, the grey stripe on mine is on the 5th row. When you want to insert the thumb hole, crochet around until you get to the thumb, start chaining, I think I did 7 or so, put through between thumb and index, and find where it would be comfortable to reattach. Write down what you do here so you can duplicate on the other warmer. Reattach on the other side of the thumb. You should have a big wrist cuff with a single strand of chains between the thumb and index. Work back up 2 stitches of the thumb chain part (I just single cr. right back up), and continue the rest of your row. ONE ROW TO GO! Start your next row as usual, but when you get to the thumb hole part, crochet 2 stitches together. This creates a tapering thing that hugs your hand a little tighter. I hope this makes sense. When I make some for my boyfriend, I'll take some pictures.

Jan. 12th, 2004 03:48 pmDoes anyone know where to download embroidery patterns that aren't lame or traditional? Maybe like Geishas or something with Asian influence, or just anything beautiful and unusual.

Jan. 12th, 2004 04:32 pmwell. i need just a little bit of help from you wonderful ladies. today i was a huge bitch to my boyfriend...it was just one of those days when joking with me did not make the situation funny. and im pmsing like whoa. haha, so that does not help either. but neither of those things make it ok for me to be really harsh to him all day and i feel horrible now, because he really didnt deserve my bitchyness, and he was only trying to cheer me up.
and the point of this is that i want to make him something that is cute, lovely-dovey, please-forgive-me-for-being-so-mean-to-you deal. it kinda needs to be quick, because i want to get it done tonight, and also something has household materials. i got about 4 drawers overflowing craft stuff though, so i do have something to work with.
i wanted to look this up in the memories section, and hopefully not waste anyones time, but that seems to be down at the moment...or at least for my computer.

Jan. 12th, 2004 06:09 pmokay, I'm making a bean bag chair out of old t-shirts. I have the bean bag chair part made. I need packing peanuts to fill it with, though. I can't find any.
So, a call for help here....if you would be so incredibly kind as to send me any extra packing peanuts you've got, can you either email me at chickenstheycometheygo at yahoo dot com or leave me your email so I can email you the address at which to ship them?
thank you <3333333
(and before anyone thinks I'm gonna get any stalkers, the shipping address *isn't* my home address)

Calling Chicago crafters....
Jan. 12th, 2004 07:33 pmHey, any Chicago craft grrls out there willing to brave this cooold to craft?
A fellow LJer and I are starting up a regular crafty group. Sort of a stitch n' bitch, but not just for knitting or sewing-- for all (portable) crafty projects! First group will be at my house this Thursday evening.
If you're interested, let me know (post here or you can email me from my profile). We started up an LJ community for it and Yahoo Group and everything in the hopes that we'll find some fellow stranded and inspired crafty gals in Chicago. ;)

On the faq issues.
Jan. 12th, 2004 08:02 pmThanks to a concerned craftgrrl that contacted me I did some experimenting, and discovered that my paid accounts can see the faq without any issues. I can also see it just fine when I am logged out completely. My free accounts cannot see the faq.
Could anyone else tell me if they are having problems with the faq and if it might be paid vs free users? I want to file with support because they just put some new code online today (
lj_maintenance to see the posts about it today.), and I think that might be the issue. We haven't changed anything with the memories, and they do exist, I am just not sure who can't see them, or why.
Thanks a lot!
***EDIT***
Thanks to the quick response, it seems it's affecting many communities, so I filed a support ticket.

Jan. 12th, 2004 08:35 pmOkay dokay! You guys are fast! I got enough responses to know it's not just us, and that pretty much everyone is having that problem. I submitted it to support to see if they can either fix it, or if it's a LJ wide bug they are working on.
Thanks so much for being so speedy on it.
**Oh, and for the record support doesn't support LJ tags, or html in thier little comment box. heh.

tea containers
Jan. 12th, 2004 09:02 pmOk. I drink tons of this. The containers are nifty and air-tight, but for the life of me I can't think of anything I can do with the suckers. They are metal underneath the label so I could decorate them or cover them with clay...but then what? What could I use containers shaped like this for? Any interesting ideas?

What support says about the faq/memories
Jan. 12th, 2004 10:01 pmI got a response from support for our weird disappearing faq titles, and apparently it's a known bug, and they are working on it. No say on time, but I guess they are working on it.

When someone asks you to make them something, do you charge them? My cousin wants me to make her this hooded scarf and mittens. I told her to buy the yarn or give me the money and I'll get the yarn. Well now she doesn't want it anymore, she felt I should make it for free since shes family.
How would you handle this? What should I do in the future when people ask me to make them things?

Jan. 12th, 2004 10:57 pmMy mom made a ton of these stretch bracelets with vintage glass beads and crystals she's bought online and found at thrift stores. They're just as pretty as the department store ones... I need your input on what colors you like the best.

Jan. 12th, 2004 11:01 pmI was inspired by this post, featuring a "muppet" scarf, to post a costume I did for our Renaissance Festival's "Day of Wrong" this past October.
"Day of Wrong" is a day, randomly chosen by a group of hard-core Rennies, to wear garb that is inherenly WRONG in some manner--be it style, color, or farbic selection. PIcs of all our group's costumes can be found here....
...but I went as the Muppet Slayer. :)
See, I was inspired by a bolt of fabric I found in the $1/yard section at JoAnn's. It was very, very orange... and very, very fuzzy. Like bad 70's shag carpeting. I think we HAD this color carpet growing up. I held it up to my boyfriend, who exclaimed in mock horror - "It looks like you killed a Muppet".
So, the muppet fur became a skirt. I found some hideously tacky pink and orange floral rayon print for the chemise... and some great magenta wool for the bodice. Wool is period, isn't it? *grin*
Top it off with little wicker cages, complete with tiny Muppets. I started out with Animal, the Sweedish Chef and Beaker... but the Chef escaped sometime during the day. We "Borked" our way around faire, trying to find the missing Chef. Yeah, we're wierd. ;)
( photos cut, for the weak of heart... )

the strawberry compie project!!
Jan. 12th, 2004 11:05 pmThe DIY section on my site.
I just finished it. It's got like, next to nothing on it, since I'm not sure how I'll lay out everything. I basically just released my new site layout last night.
Anyway though, I just did another fat update to it just now.
The main focus on the site right now is the spotlight feature -- the strawberry compie project.
I posted about it in this previous craftgrrl entry.
But there's the details as well as photos of everything we've done so far. :)
I'm hoping to add video clips soon, too.

Hello all. A while back I was reading through the FAQ/Memories, and came across a little bit on tea staining paper. I decided this would be perfect for a little thing Im doing and decided to give it a try. I made tea, put it in a bowl, and soaked a peice of paper in it for about 2 or 3 minutes. I then took it out, layed it under some paper towels and applied pressure. I then hung it up to fully dry. But, in the end, it wasnt very stained at all. Im wondering if maybe Im not leaving it in the tea long enough. Or maybe Im just doing something totally wrong. If anyone has any idea and would like to share, please let me know. Thanks!

craftiness
Jan. 12th, 2004 11:41 pmSo, I was thinking about starting a craft group (I saw some craftgrrls had similar ideas so i thought ..no time like the present.) I live in Orlando, FL and I thought that each week someone could "host" a different activity and show everyone how to do that activity.
I would be more than willing to do this at my apartment (weekly, bi-weekly, monthly) whatever.. and maybe have sort of a potluck (coffee, tea, desserts, etc)
If anyone is interested.. please let me know
