My first handmade box
Mar. 6th, 2004 12:26 pmHi, everybody! I've been part of the community for a while, but this is my first "look what I did!" post. My friend Melissa turns 22 on Monday, and I made her a box. All materials came from the Paper Source (oh, do I love that store!).
( WARNING: (VERY SLIGHTLY) ADULT MATERIAL INSIDE )
The kits the Paper Source sells are really easy to use - you have to buy adhesive, paper, and bookcloth separately. The bookcloth was the most expensive part, and I'd be even more careful gluing the paper next time - I used a really delicate paper, and it bubbled a little bit. But I'm pretty proud of my first attempt.

make-shift headboard
Mar. 6th, 2004 02:51 pmi just purchased a grass/straw mat very similar to the one below and am interested in attaching it to the space above my bed to act as a sort of headboard. i have two questions, however.
1. what would be the best way of attaching the mat to the wall?
2. there is an electrical outlet on that wall into which a few things are plugged in... would it be possible to cut a square in the mat for the outlet? is there any way i could prevent it from falling apart if i do so?

thanks in advance!

Stress Workshop.
Mar. 6th, 2004 03:15 pmMy sister asked me to help her find some ideas on what activities she could do during a stress workshop. She's going to some leadership conference and each school has a workshop, theirs is on stress and stress management. I thought it'd be fun to do some crafts that could help manage stress. All I could come up with was stress balls from balloons. Do you have any more ideas?

Mar. 6th, 2004 04:11 pmHey I've been in this community for about 2 months now but i never posted. Anyway I want to ask for some help.
I have these mussel (kind of like oyseters) shells that I want to make minute holes in so I can connect them with fishing line or something but I can't figure out how to make the holes without cracking the shells!! Someone please help!

So I ordered some Corriedale roving from Mielkesfarm.com. I sent in the order late friday night, got an email back Sunday night, which sprised me because they had a notice saying they were not going to be back until Monday. So I then paypal'd the money to them. (I do dislike not being able to just use a shopping cart!). I got the roving today, Saturday. Not bad at all. I had heard good things about them from the wool dread making girls over at
fakehair, and they were right, they were very friendly, and fast.
So I made a ghetto drop spindle from
civil's post in
craftgrrl (I am too lazy to find it right now, please forgive me.) But it boiled down to using a couple of dead cd's and a cup hook at the top of a dowel.
So I started spinning from the little web videos at Joyofhandspinning.com and Icanspin.com. The first yard or so I spun was big and fat, but then I started to get the hang of how to feed the roving into the spinning bit. I was amazed that I got it going on such a ghetto spindle.
Here are three pics of what I have so far, and the ghetto spindle.
( pictures here!!!! )
My left arm is sore as hell, now. I have really weak shoulders, and upper arms from being injured nursing, so maybe this is a way to slowly (or not so as the case may be) rebuild some strength in that arm again. I hadn't expected that, but I didn't know what to expect I guess.
Does anyone know if I have to "set the twist" in the yarn some how?
Also how do I get cool things spun into it? Like slubs, and puffs and stuff. Do I just feed more roving into the spin as I go?
Can you tell I am excited as hell about this? I am ignoring my programming project for spinning today.

Cigar Box interiors
Mar. 6th, 2004 05:20 pmHi, I've been lurking here for a while but not yet posted. I've been having a great time reading through the FAQ and getting ideas and looking at all the gorgeous crafts..
I do a lot of collage & I'm working on several cigar boxes right now. The outsides are OK, but I'd like the insides to look pretty too. Does anyone have any ideas? Should I just decopage & collage the inside? piant? fabric? I'm pretty inexperienced with fabrics & fibers- is there an easy way to line boxes?
Thanks for any hints!

Help, Please!
Mar. 6th, 2004 05:42 pmHot Topic is selling these Harry Potter t-shirts and I really love the Sirius Black design on the front. I've taken it and made it into a stencil (here's the shirt for a visual). Since I'm more of a jacket person, I bought an orange jacket at Rave for only $2.99 (marked down from $12.99 with no defects!) and I'm planning on stenciling the design across the back. Now I'm not quite sure how I'm going to do it.
The shirt was originally black with a light brown patter, so how am I going to make it work on orange (for that escaped convict look, heh). Should I paint black on the jacket first and then stencil the thing in on white? Or should I just do black? Or perhaps just white? Perhaps I should paint it on some black fabric and then sew the patch onto the jacket. Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance, folks.

Mar. 6th, 2004 09:53 pmMy friend Gaby and I are verrrrrry bored. heh. And we want something crafty to do. We don't have much to deal with, but the usual around the house stuff.
Sorry if there's anything I missed in the FAQ.
Any suggestions?
Thanks.
