I looked in the FAQ/Memories, and i figured i would find it under "wings", but there isn't a section :\

What's the best gauge wire to use for making wings? I know wire clothing hangers are great, but what gauge is that? I need something that is flexible, yet sturdy. i want to buy some wire instead of using hangers, because i have alot of ideas for new pixi wings.

Thanks!

I hate to ask such a vague question, but I need simple yet purty ideas on how to repaint the desk that I've sanded and filled in the cracks and prepared for painting.
I want something simple that will match really any decor, but not just plain black or silver (thats all I can think of now). The drawer pulls are sorta built in or I'd just add some pretty knobs.
HELP!!

Spinning...

After [livejournal.com profile] heresyoftruth posted about her spinning adventures using her drop spindle I thought I would add my quick spinning and yarning tips so that they were available to whomever would want them. So here we go...
1. When buying roving ALWAYS ALWAYS card through it at least once, even though you might have purchased pre-carded roving it has still been packaged/sitting in a store/falling off shelves etc. so the fibers really need to be realigned, if they aren't you may wind up with some issues spinning later on. Basically the whole business will go much much faster if you take the time to card first.

2. If dying your own wool or other animal fibers though they may be completely washed etc. there may still be some left over oils, so do yourself a favor and soak first then dye. If you get oils floating on top it means you need to rewash your wool. Also, it is probably to your advantage to use some sort of naturally based dye, since they are cheaper to make (unless you are using kool-aid) and typically hold much better in raw wool after setting a bit.

3. Whence drop spindling weight and distance are your two best friends. If you can't quite get it at first try standing on a chair, it's the distance factor that helps. Other things to try....adding weight to the bottom of your spindle, increasing your drop by using stairs as your friend, scooting away from whereever you were and giving yourself a bit more distance.

4. When setting the twist of the yarn, set the twist, then ply then reset. If you need help plying keep in mind that all you are doing is spinning two lengths of yarn together, you are essentially doing the same thing as you did the first time you just have bits of yarn you are putting a twist in rather than just wool.

5. IF you are planning to knit/crochet with the new yarn you are making keep in mind that it will not behave like commercially produced yarn, if you are okay with that then yay, if not you may want to use your homemade yarn for another more decorative purpose. (learning to knit on homemade yarn while you are learning to spin as well is not fun from experience).

My favorite thing to knit right now is hats in the round. I can't get enough of them. I'm going to have to start charity knitting, because I only have so many friends.

This is what I've knitted this week... )

I also made myself a matching scarf and hat in Bernat Boucle blue shades. I love them so much, but they didn't photograph well.

If anyone has any good online patterns for hats in the round that you'd like to share, I'd love some more links!

Plying!

I figured out how to ply my yarn with another yarn. I wanted a bobble-ee slub bumpy yarn like those found at Fuzzybumblebee.com or Pluckyfluff.com. I love those funny irregular yarns, but I could never afford to buy them.

So wrapped my yarn around a dowel to keep the spin on it, and then did the same with some red heart blue clouds. I have no idea how it will all work out, but the wool single I spun seems to have a good hold on the blue clouds acrylic.

Hmm, I looked thru FAQ and found a post about that to do with Yogurt containers + Lids but..none of those ideas were satisfying to me...

Anyone else have anything to do with them? The first aid kit was the only idea I could really use/like.

I was thinking like.. alongt he lines of the first aid kit.. like.. a little love kitt hing for homeless people? like.. maybe a food card for a local resturant, "first aid" items, a little card that says people care and stuff....or something like that? any suggjestions would be nice.

but we jutt went to costco and got like 100 cups of yogurt!! I NEED something to do with these cups!

Crafts, cosmetics and saving money.

I had a coupon for 40% off an item at JoAnn, and I'd been eyeing a tissue box cover there, so I went & picked it up. My mirror & lightswitch cover in my bathroom were decoupaged with makeup items, and it seemed right to do the tissue box in the same theme. But this time I decided to highlight my favorite cosmetics line, Nars. I cut up a booklet & some promo materials I had and

this is what I came up with )

it says "and you are my journey" since it's kinda hard to read

:)

also, I'm going to be in Northern California doing some business this summer. Can anyone recommend some fabulous crafty stores in the Bay Area? I'm not looking for just craft stores, just places where I can buy gorgeous little crafty things.

Thank you ;)

Hi all, I just joined. I looked through the memories, and I didn't find any posts about sewing spandex. I'm probably being stupid, but I looked up the settings for knits in my necchi handbook and i think it had the tension at 2 or something.

however, when i try to sew spandex it either 1) gets sucked into the bobbin area, 2) makes stiches but they're all loopy and loose because the threading through the machine gets all loose (or really tight)

my machine does have a stretchy stitch, but that just cameout knotted immediately. same with zig zag. the straight stitch is the one that gets all loopy...

please help!

disclamer: excuse my exhuberant description (no, i'm not trying to sell this). can you tell i've been writing product descriptions all night?
