So I am currently making a man's kilt using
Folkware #152 instructions

I have all the pleats pinned and am getting ready to fit the waistband but it occured to me after reading through the directions several times that it makes no mention at any time as to when I'm supposed to finish off the bottom hem, nor how big the hem should be.

Nothing has been sewed together yet, just pinned, should I finish the hem now?
I also believe it is cut to the finished size since there were no allowances given in the instructions for a bottom hem.
Should I attach hemtape and do a 1/4 hem?

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

I'm pretty sure that I saw directions on making one of those vinyl beachbag looking purses with magazine photos sewed into them a while back. I've been looking throught he archives and the memories for days! Does anyone know what I'm talking about?

A leg lamp! How do I make one? How would I stabilize the leg to a base?

Tonight my sewing project will be making an old black zip-up hoodie smaller, make elbow length sleeves, and stitch fabric bird cut-outs to the back (and maybe line the hood with some vintage material? i don't know how! anyone?).

The questions is... vinyl birds, or velvet birds?
How well would the vinyl stay on the sweatshirt? I'm worried it would be to heavy, and not wash well. But then again, can you machine wash velvet? What do you think?

I've made heaps of clothes recently, getting ready for winter but haven't had time to photograph them. They'll be gradually making their way here over the next few weeks.

To start we have a shirt. I added the sleeves and silk screen print. This was actually the biggest disaster as the paint didn't got through the screen very well so I ended up painting most of the picture on, hence the dodgyness!
You wanna see it don't you?? )

I absolutely love the guitar pick earrings, barbie shoe earrings, etc. Unfortunately, my ears are gauged (size 0). Has anyone attempted to make plugs? If so, please share!!! Plugs are damn expensive, and i really can't be blowing $20 on a pair. Anyone have any ideas? I assume i'd have to find a mold to shape them in.

I thought this would be a good place to ask this question. :) Does anyone have any suggestions for a good beginner's sewing machine? I don't want to spend very much (because I don't have much to spend! Ha!). I am just looking for something simple, nothing terribly fancy. Any suggestions are welcome! :)

it's looks really cheap, but i don't want to spend money on a machine that wont work too well. so if you know anything about this model please tell me. thanks.

I'm a very crafty person... mainly I work with polymer clay and silk dyeing, but I dabble in lots of stuff. I'm already enjoying reading the posts and comments here, and have tossed in my .02 a couple times. I'll post some of my latest stuff soon, and look forward to really learning a lot here.

I do have one question, and would love advice. I want to use the silk I dye to quilt and embellish for wall hangings. Does anyone have any experience with sewing silk? I've not tried it yet, because I've heard it's hard to do. I mainly use crepe de chine. Ideas? Suggestions?

Thanks!

I made two-toned/star-shaped soap yesterday for my friend's birthday. They turned out all right, but it would have been much easier had I had more than a few plastic bowls and a cookie cutter.

I love soap )

Now I'm home alone and there's a thunderstorm, and I'm petrified.
