Im going to Uni in september, and I chose the halls I wanted the first time i went to look around, because I fell in love with the amazing view of the lake and the park, but frankly the room is yucky. Ive already got some sari fabric to hang / pin over the brown curtains like a pelmet/droopy thing, to atleast cover them when the curtains are open. Ive looke in the FAQ and was wndering if anybody could give me some advice on covering the walls, i wanted to have something like a giant piece of pop art on the wall, and was thinking about projecting something onto a sheet and painting it before I go, but my local artists place are selling canvasses cheap, and was wondering if anybody had a good idea on how to hang the canvas without putting holes in the walls, or on any alternative wall coverings, because the walls are brown too, eww.
Cheers

I've been sewing on some thin cotton fabric, but it keeps bunching at the seams. So whenever I am done sewing both seams, I need to slide the fabric down on the thread so it is straight, and not bunched up anymore.
Then I inspected my work, and noticed that some of the seams had popped from all the straightening, and I am wondering what is going on. The stiches I am using aren't any smaller than they should be.
I am not using any interfacing or anything on the fabric.

Does anyone know how to amend the situation? Is the tension too tight on my sewing machine? are my stiches too small?

last night i made my first ever candle with some melted beeswax i bought. i added 3 color chips and quite a few drops of grapefruit essential oil but all i smell is the beeswax, the color came out kind of blah (to me anyway).

does anyone have recommendations for good wax that changes color fairly easily and takes scents just as easily?

Tired of sweeping pins out of the back of drawers, pulling them out of the carpet, etc. whenever I needed them, and not being a big fan of the hard red plastic wrist cuffs I created this:

I recycled yarn from a thrift store sweater and then dyed it with Kool-Aid. Now I need ideas what to make with it since it's chunkier yarn than I'm used to. Any suggestions?

Look here for the transformation of old sweater to pretty yarn... )

Hey there guys 'n galls. Have a question for you. I'd like to make some bread bags, to help keep the bread we've been baking nice and fresh (we got a breadmaker, woohoo). I am, however, at a loss as to what fabric would be best for this purpose.
Thanks for your help!

Sorry if I missed it in the memories, but I have a question. I recently bought a really cool lighter that has a knife built into it. On the front of the lighter there's a picture of a skull smoking and wearing a top hat. I'd like to color it in, but I'm not sure what type of paint to use, or what type of metal the lighter is made of. I know it isn't stainless steel because magnets won't stick to it. Would enamel paint work? And for that matter, would fingernail polish work, because I'm poor and can't afford paint right now, but I have every color of nail polish imaginable. Also, there's a small scratch in the metal under the skull. How can I get that out? Thanks!

I'd like to spice up my apartment door. (I've had wreaths out there that I've made before and haven't had a problem with stealing or anything).

Any ideas for a funky wreath/door decoration? I want something a bit "younger" than silk flowers in a ring. Something unexpected and unique. Any ideas?

My boyfriend is away at the beach while I'm stuck here in the rain. Anyways, I really miss him and I want to give him something special when he comes back on Sunday. I have this gorgeous picture of us at prom. I went to Wal Mart and made it sepia tone with the Kodak machine there. I'm trying to figure out a crafty way to give it to him rather than just put it in a frame. I want him to be able to display it though. Any suggestions or ideas?

This is the shirt that you get from Wet Seal for spending so much money that my boyfriend's mom gave me.
To small for her, but to big for me,
so: )

Yesterday I went to my boyfriend's grandparents 50th wedding anniversary party and wore this shirt and his mom and grandmother loved it! They were so cute and making a huge deal about that fact that that I designed/sewed it by hand.

[edit: Don't use webshots to upload pictures, it's crappy! Sorry about that!]

Thanks to everyone who suggested ideas for me to put together raffia. Here's the results... )

I'm a beginner crocheter, and I'm trying to crochet a scarf as practice. I'm just using a double crochet stitch.

A picture of what I have so far )

As you can see, it's not looking so hot. Everytime I chain 3 for a new row, it leaves a big hole. It also is getting a "pyramid" effect, and I cant figure out how to fix it. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks! :)

i thought i'd share the costumes my mom, my sister and i made for a community theatre play. the costume designer for a play ended up in the hospital, without even starting on the costumes. the director waiting a few weeks before contacting mom, and then asked her and my sister to do the costumes within 3 weeks. that wouldn't be too bad, except that the play is set in barkerville during the gold rush and has a cast of about 10, with 5 of them can can girls! further story and pictures! )

also, i bought a new sewing machine! it's beautiful. it's baby blue! i don't know how to work it! i love it )

so that's what i've been busy with. i have a ton of half finished projects that were set aside for these costumes, including screen printing, an altered book, a record clock and new bedding for our bedroom. that's what next weekend is for!
