When working with vinyl, what kind of paint should I use?
I am making something out of some of that fake leather-y vinyl material, and I have no idea what type of paint would work best on it.
I've already checked the memories section under any related categories, and I came up with nothing.
Any help is very much appreciated. Thanks!

Hello. I was just wondering if anyone knew anywhere I could find a template for a Venetian mask and instructions how to make one?

When finishing a quilt, you have to sew the front down to the back so it doesn't slide around and such, right? (besides using ribbon/yarn to do it)

How on earth do you cram a quilt into your sewing machine to do it? There's just not enough room I don't think for doing that!

And what color thread should I use so it doesn't look awkward? The squares are a solid orange, and a patterend jungle themed green... do I use orange thread? Green thread? a Metallic gold or silver thread so as not to clash with any of the colors?

Right, so, every second post seems to involve and revel in the glory of mod podge, but the problem is, my third-world, craft-backward country doesn't have this wonder. Does anyone know of an alternative available in New Zealand?

Hey all. Newbie de-lurking over here. :)
With a bunch of help from this community's FAQ, I just made my first messenger bag:

Plus 4 other pictures )

I made this bag because I stumbled upon some leftover fabric from a dress-with-matching-legwarmers I made out of an 80s Pacman-bedsheet that I got from Ebay a while ago. (Some tiny and not very clear pictures can be found here and here. Nevermind my goofy face, I was at a party and I was a wee bit drunk. :)).
After days and days of working on it and with a whole bunch of help from my mom I eventually finished that Chinese-style dress but I ended up with a lots of scraps of fabric. So there, I made this bag. My first sewing-project that didn't involve my mum doing 90% of the work, I did it all alone. Yay! So thanks, craftgrrls! :)

pardon me if this is retreading of obvious ground, because i know there are a ton of sewing machine posts already in this community (believe me, i've read them all), but i have one anyway and i hope it doesn't bother too much.

okay, so for my twenty-first birthday i told my mother i'd like a sewing machine. she's asking me to research brands so i get one that's geared to what i want it for, but she put the price limit at about $200 for one. which is fine, of course because i'm not an industrial worker going to be using it, but i want a versatile enough machine that won't break down within a week. i'd like it to last a fair while until later on when i probably will upgrade it (unless i fall in love with it already).

now here's the thing: i plan to use this not just to make quick little projects like skirts or purses (though that may happen too-- i have plans for making some with my own silkscreen designs). i have been working with silkscreen and fabric on paper for the past few months in my art classes, and believe me handsewing through printmaking paper is a pain (i utilized a thumbtack as a punch and then threaded through the holes-- talk about time-consuming!). i want to have the ability to work with a variety of materials: paper, fabric (probably nothing really heavyweight), vinyl even perhaps (as i cross my fingers and hope such a thing can be sewn with my upcoming machine). while i will be constructing objects, like clothing or sewing pages of books together i would also utilize it as a drawing/embroidery tool after a fashion, but i don't want an embroidering machine per se.

i'm pretty certain any machine can be used for this purpose, but i was wondering if anyone could suggest a good quality machine for this price; i hear both good and bad about certain brands so i'm wondering if anyone can provide help and i apologize about asking a common question.

thanks!

I have a sectional sofa that I decided to reupholster because it is about 15 years old and the people that had it before I did had cats who used the arms like a scratching post. It would have been uuuugly even without that. I finally finished one of the sections. The cowch sat naked with just the batting on it for about a month because I needed an extra pair of hands to help me hold the fabric down. Once I actually got someone to help me, it only took about a day. First, a few before pictures of what I call the old badness ) I haven't done any upholstering on this scale before, just a few cushions here and there. I think these cowches were harder because they aren't a uniform shape. The arms are both different shapes so I couldn't just put the fabric over it inside out and pin it like one would normally be able to do. Nonetheless, I figured it out.

So now, after lots of fabric, cursing, and sore fingers,I give you....

Hi!
This looks like something I could make, however I've never made a rug and have no idea where to start. Has anyone ever made something like this or could point me in the direction of a how-to?

Thanks!
