i want to dye my chucks.
they're white and while i really like them white (i got blood on them and it maks me look like a bad ass. har.), i'd rather have them black.

my question is this-
if i just throw them in a bucket of rit, will the rubber take the dye as well? i remember having a pair a long time ago and i would color the rubber with markers, them wash it off with windex and do it again. i don't know about dye though.

also, will they come out BLACK black and not grey? i usually have a lot of trouble getting things to go black, even when they're 100% cotton.

it would probably be easier to just paint them with fabric paint and really rub it into the fabric actually. dying them will involve having to let them dry, then i'll probably end up staining all my socks.

comments?

So I'm making a book for my spare room. Kinda a smarty pants version of a guest services book you'd find in a hotel. Can anyone help me think of things to put inside?

Hi!
I just finished this project last night! Unfortunately, in our small apartment, there is no good place to put the cat litter box...So we stuck it under the kitchen table (we don't eat in the kitchen).
But since we have hardwood floors, litter would scatter all over the place which looked yucky, especially in the kitchen. We would vac every day, but everytime they used the box, litter would fly everywhere. So I needed a sort of litter forcefield to put around the box to help contain it.....

I was thinking of one of those old fashioned changing screens, but didn't want to deal with building a frame, etc. Then I though of decorative shutters people put on the inside of the house, so I went to Home Depot. Just an FYI, shutters are outrageously expensive. One pair of indoor shutters is like, $50! I needed 3-4 pairs and I wasn't about to spend that kind of cash on a cat litter issue. So I found a set of 4 weatherbeaten pairs on eBay for like $15. The slats in them were damaged on some of them, so I smashed them out with a hammer. They were old shutters and the wood was soft so this was easy (and fun).

Then I got some nice upholstery fabric, and staplegunned a panel to the back of each shutter. It was hard to decide on fabric since there are Soooo many awesome home dec fabrics available now. But I thought a modern, bright print (my first choice) would look odd on the beat up shutters, so I wanted something more neutral and I found a nice woven Waverly fabric that reminded me a little of burlap, but much more refined. Then I got some new hinges, and screwed them all together accordian style. I think they came out good. They look pleasantly weathered, and they hide the cat box, and I think they will help keep the litter from going all the way across the floor....see pics behind the cut...

Text-only for lack of camera :(

So the other day I finally got the balls (of yarn) to jump on in and get crafty. And I can now knit! I am so excited. I am working on making a scarf for my first project. Pictures soon, when I get a camera.

I also picked up some fabric paint and...a sticker maker! I freaked out when I saw this thing. It's a Xyron 150 (http://www.xyron.com) sticker maker. It's small, but makes anything into a sticker! Great fun.

Thanks to all of you fabulous crafty gals for inspiring me to finally get on in there and be crafty!!!! Back to scarf-making!

Sorry for the text only post, but I promise pictures if this ever gets completed. :)

I'm making a Hermione Granger costume for Halloween, and the Hogwarts robes was the part giving me fits. Well, it occured to me to go get a graduation gown from a thrift store instead of trying out sewing skills that I don't have. LOL So I got my black gown and it's perfect except.... Is there an easy way to take the tucks out of the top part and re-sew the sleeves without screwing up the entire thing? I mean, I'm guessing I could seam rip where I want the tucks out, then stretch the material straight and sew it back on....but I'm scared I'm going to mess it up! Should I be scared? I just don't have the sewing experience/skills that most of you have, so if someone could just kind of reassure me that this would be ok to do, or tell me a good way to do it, I would soooooo appreciate it! I guess if I screw it up badly, I could go get another robe, because the thrift shop had tons of them, but I'd rather not waste the $7 again. :) Thanks crafty babes!

i'm making a sweater vest to weat in seattle next week, and i need some input...

ok, so i'm making a sweater vest to wear to seattle. it's white with lavendar on the edges. now, i'm done with 9 1/2 inches of the 16 inches needed for the back, and i'm getting damn tired of straight stockinette, and i know if i make the front exactly like the back, i'll never finish this thing (crafting ADD, remember?)...sooooooo, a little poll...

how should i make the front of the vest
A. exactly like the back - use some self-discipline & just finish it
B. argyle - lavender & light green
C. argyle - lavender & pale pink
D. fair isle of my own design - lavender & light green
E. fair isle of my own design - lavender & pale pink
F. cabling - use those knitting math skills & pay attention to what i'm doing!

hey
this may be a little weird, but as halloween is approaching my rather large group of friends came up with the idea that it would be funny to dress up as a living room set and assemble ourselves together when we go trick-or-treating since this is our last year all together and we wanted to do something fun.

so if you have any ideas for costumes regarding a living room set please feel free to comment.

This costume cost me about $9 altogether and i have fur left over. The zipper was half of that!
I made this entirely without a pattern!! It took me about 8 hours to finish, about two days of a couple hours each. I adore it!

When I saw this entry about a can drink tab belt I KNEW I had to try it, so I saved up lots of tabs, and then saved up more, and more, and even more. I was to the point where I walked through a parking lot and saw a stray tab laying there, and had the strong urge to pick it up. But finally I got enough so here's my belt!

I think it turned out pretty cool. )

If I can get up enough tabs I think I'm going to make another to give my best friend for her birthday next month, or maybe try a bracelet or something. :)
