I'm in the process of unraveling a sweater to reuse the yarn. I am interested in dying the wool, and was looking off the kool aid dye chart in the memories section. my question is:

to dye yarn, does it have to be completely wool yarn? The sweater is
80% acrylic
10% angora
5% wool
5% nylon
will this dye with kool aid, or do I need something different?

so here's my question.
Whenever I crochet scarves I have a problem.
I can never get each row to be the same length. Now I'm not about to count my stitches, thats just tedious. So I started instead of doing each line the width of the scarf, I do each line the LENGTH. This is only for solid color scarves of course. But then the scarf curls. So thats out.
So how can I make sure that each line is the same length?

I am in the process of crocheting a friend a poncho. (Think old time west; the mexican ponchos) I am using a pattern from the 1970's and to close the sides it says, "Lace sides with ski boot thongs..." Well, that is not what I want to do. I plan to use leather hank that you can by at a craft store. I am planning to make a tie on each side. To attach the leather hank to the poncho, I am planning to loop the leather hank through a stitch on the poncho and then secure it to itself. My question is, what is the best way to secure the leather hank to itself? Thanks for your input!

yes i know its been asked a bajillion times. and yes i scoured the memories quite thoroughly, that said:

i plan on burning several discs worth of delicious smashing pumpkins bsides, demos, unreleased, and otherwise hard to come by goodies for a friend of mine. a recent pumpkin fan - he only has the basic albums and since i have 10gbs worth of fun stuff i thought id share the joy. however its just no fun to get cdrs for christmas no matter how great the contents. so im trying to think of interesting ways of packaging them. i had the rather brilliant idea to put all the cases in a plastic pumpkin halloween pail - but unfortunately i had this rather brilliant idea in late november. blasted.

so...any ideas how to package up some pumpkiny things? or alternately any idea where to find a kids pumpkin halloween pale in late november?

Has anyone tried to paint fabric shower curtains? What type of paints do you use on fabric for things like that?

Has anyone tried to make curtains out of vintage linens? This is something I'm debating trying but wanted to see if it has been attempted yet.

and you ladies always give me great advice and suggestions so i had to ask!

okay, well i plan on making my dad a book. sort of a daddy and me/i love my daddy book. i think it'll be really special since i haven't made him anything since i was a kid and since A LOT of the time we don't always see eye to eye. so my question for now is what are some interesting ways to incorporate music into the book? specifically by the artist Santana. one of the main big things my dad and i have in common is our love for music. and even though i'm into rock and he's into old school stuff we both love Santana. obviously i can add some lyrics into the book. i was also thinking maybe burning my favorite songs onto a c.d. and adding it to the back of the book. any other ideas would be greatly appreciated!

oh! and anybody know of any poems or childrens books having to do with the "daddy and me" theme? i'm off to do a google search right now. thanks!

Hey everyone

(sorry for asking a question but I know you can help)

For Christmas gifts I wanted to make some purses, you know the kind that have the kiss lock closures? Where would be a good store to find those closures?

Thanks so much,
Nicole

ok.

i am desperate.

i just bought a pattern for a dress, and this is my first time using a pattern. my problem is this: I am using the layout indicated in the pattern for my size, but when i'm actually looking at the pattern sheets, it says that the sizes on there are 6-8-10. But none of those are my sizes. So, which line do I cut on? How do I cut it so that it's the appropriate sized piece for my size?

I'd like to fray the edges of some fabric, but I want it to stay frayed a certain length and be sort of neat. How can I get a frayed edge to ...stay that way, I guess?

for the longest time i thought i had to learn to crochet if i wanted to make those cute little flowers and other embellishments. but alas, i've learned through knitting.. i knitted this Knitty coif a while ago, and wanted to jazz it up with a knitted star. it's a funky, blocky looking star but i still like it!

:) A wonderful long skinny scarf crocheted out of 1.97 walmart yarn.  I'm very new to this crochet thing but I know I skipped 5 stitches each time to create nice holes when you stretch it.  Also an ornament.

i'm preparing for christmas with more than a week to go, for once, and decided to make bags for some friends and let them cover them with bad private jokes. all i need are iron-on letters, which, unfortunately, i can't find in any stores. can anyone point me to sites that sell them that either ship to europe or are actually located on the right side of the atlantic?

and...
i'm also looking for somewhere i can buy sweatshopfree t-shirts in europe. american apparel is great, just expensive. especially when you factor in shipping.

(sorry for clogging the page with questions from a craftgrrl virgin. i looked through the memories and couldn't find answers, but if i missed something feel free to delete this)

a first!

Oooooh my first post...I've been a long-time lurker.

Pardon if the cut was done incorrectly.

clicky!! )

So as you can see, I've made a skirt.  The top grey portion was once an icky gym tee shirt from a school I despised, so I covered the school's name with a pink patch.  See?  Yes.  And then I added a little button in the corner of the patch.  I used a tutorial (I think something around the lines of...10 MIN MAX TUTORIAL!), but I'm a bit skinny and my legs are long, so the skirt ended up way too short for my taste.  So I said, meow!  I'm going to add scraps to the bottom!  Except those aren't really scraps; those are pieces of fabric.  In the end the skirt comes down about two inches before my knees.

Look at those pretty colors!!!

Thanks for looking.  Yay!  My first post.

Any suggestions on what else to add to it?
