Has anyone here ever made fortune cookies out of fabric? I'm working on some last minute stocking stuffers and gifts for the office. I've seen it done and have an online tutorial ready. Just looking for some tips or products that would be good to use.

Thanks!

Hi! I just discovered this group and it is great! Everyone on here is so talented and has given me such great ideas! If only I had the time and money to do them all.

Anyway, my dad recently went to Las Vegas on business and brought me back a mini deck of cards. Probably about 1 1/2 inches by 2 inches. I'll never use them for actual card playing and would really like to do something with them.

I've considered covering a picture frame, but I've never been to Vegas and I think that makes it look like I did. I don't really want a mobile or a lamp. Right now I'm thinking of using them to cover something, but I don't know what. I just want it to be something I will use and to look -- if it's possible -- as classy and neat as possible.

Thanks for any tips you can send my way.

I hope it's okay to post this, since my last entry (understandably) was deleted.

I guess the ones of you who were fortunate enough to read my exciting tale understood that this belonged to my personal journal and not here. Pretty embarassed about that, but I guess it's just fate that the world should know about the way my body functions!

Thank you for being very nice about the whole thing, and I'll definatly try to research some articles about naproxen.

Aaand, completely unrelated, but not entirely, I'd just like to thank you all for making this community into the friendly and inspiring place it is. I've been a member here over a year, and it's been such a great place to be a part of.I hope the spirit of the community will be carried on into the new year, and hope you all have a good one.

Merry Christmas, and a happy new year to all of you.

i use felt for a lot of sewing projects like bags.. and i've found that after a while they start to get fuzzies on them like sweaters do. i think that's called pilling or something. is there any way to prevent this or a certain type of felt i should use? thanks so much.

also, i made these for my housemates for christmas:

it's a set of 4 coasters in different colors and 5 wine charms.

thought i'd show off some of my holiday crafty-ness:

this is a little tulip 'embroidery' i did on a bag for my sister in law. don't know if it counts as embroidery though since all i did was an outline :)

After reading this community for a few days, I fell in love with it and had to join. Everyone here, so far, has been so fun and crafty. It makes me happy!

Anyways, last night I felt the urge to paint the plain clear jar I have been keeping my loose change in. It looks like it could belong to Barbie, but whatever... The results + my new scarf! )

Happy last minute crafting ladies! Hope everything gets finished in time. (I'm about two months behind. YIKES!)

Hello! I decided that I would post my first attempt at making a decorative gel candle. I stress decorative, because there is glitter and plastic confetti in it, which would most likely cause a fire if the candle was burned. It is for my mom for Christmas. She collects candles. Please be nice, for this is my first attempt at creating a gel candle.

I found a great, easy to knit pattern for two colored stocking caps.  I got started making these things, and have since made 10 in two weeks.  Nice little last minute stocking stuffers.  If anyone wants the pattern, let me know.  Unfortunately, I was not clever enough to take pictures of someone IN the hat, but they do look very cute and are very warm (although, lying on the ground like that, they look like the ghosts from Pacman).  I also made my first sewn purse!

More images )

EDIT: I have posted the pattern in a separate entry. Look for the picture of all six hats like I have on this one a few posts up. Thanks!

Well, i finally got the zen garden done.

I found some great things in the scrapbooking section that were "zen" related, so i used those to decorate the tin with. I used a nice gold spraypaint on the tin, and gold ribbon to decorate around the edge of the tin.

The little tools are a mini landscapers set that i found in the dollhouse section of the craft store.

I used a tiny seashell we found on our vacation this summer, a small rough unpolished ruby (his favorite gem), and little glass flat marbles with kanji on them for specific words that would mean something to him, and one that has a white tiger on it, which is his totem animal. There are some extras so he can pick and choose what he wants to use in it.

For the cat hat, i combined two patterns.

This one for the hat - http://www.lionbrandyarn.com/

And the ears - http://www.crochetme.com/Oct_Nov_2004/patt_kitty_cat_hat.html

Due to time restraints, i'm not posting all the pictures here in this post, but there are pictures up on my yahoo photos page.

These are just some birthday presents I made for a friend of mine who's an oft neglected holiday baby like myself.

There's a pink scarf with a Sublime stitching swallow embroidered on it, a felt and ribbon brown flower pin, a couple one inch buttons, and a coptic bound book made out of a scrabble board and some light blue metal eyelets with her name written on the front in tiles.

i have until, err, 5pm tomorrow to make myself a Christmassy costume. as it's Christmas Eve, they like up to make an effort to dress up [i work in a shop]...and it just so happens that i love dressing up anyway. but, i've been really busy these past few weeks and haven't had time to make anything to wear. last year i dressed as a Christmas fairy...all in red. if i can't come up with anything, i'll just wear the same stuff tomorrow, heh.
but i'd like to try...so give me suggestions on what to dress up as/costume ideas!
thanks in advance :)
p.s. sorry i'm rambling, i only just got up ;P

Hopefully one of you can appreciate the humor in a "pearl necklace" necklace. Some people thought it was an "omg so fun winter icicle CHRISTMAS IS AWESOME" necklace. No, it's a "pearl necklace" necklace. I'm going to sell it to Paris Hilton.

Of course if you need clarification on what a pearl necklace is I suggest www.urbandictionary.com

It's freshwater pearls, swarovski crystals and crystal quartz.

hmm, well i hope you all can help me. i posted this in the community t_shirt_surgery, but almost everyone there was mean/unhelpful. so i was re-directed over here for some advice. i searched through the memories, but couldn't find anything similar to the bag under the cut. so i was wondering if anyone could help me figure out how to make one of my own! maybe you all even have some similar tutorials...
any comments would be helpful!

So, I posted about these hats earlier and people were requesting the pattern, so here goes:

Needles:
Size 13 circular needles
Size 13 double pointed needles
Large Eyed Blunt Needles
Stitch Marker

Brim:
Cast on 48 sts.  Join and place marker for beginning of rnd.
Rnds 1-4:  With A Yarn (k3, p3) around.
Rnds 5-8: With B Yarn (k3, p3) around
Repeat rounds 1-8 until piece measures 6.5 inches from beginning (I did 16 rows)

Crown:  Notes:  Continue alternating 4 rows A, 4 rows B.
Change to double pointed needles when necessary

Rnd 1: (k2tog, k1, p3, k3, p3) 4 times -- 44 stitches
Rnd 2:  Knit the knit stitches and purl the purl stitches as they face you
Rnd 3: (k2, p3, K2tog, p3)
Rnd 4:  Knit the knit stitches and purl the purl stitches as they face you
Rnd 5:  (k2, p2tog, k2, p3)  4 times --- 36 stitches
Rnd 6:  Knit the knit stitches and purl the purl stitches as they face you
Rnd 7:  (k2, p2, k2, p2tog) 4 times -- 32 sts
Rnd 8:  Knit the knit stitches and purl the purl stitches as they face you
Rnd 9:  (k2tog, p2, k2, p2) 4 times --28 stitches
Rnd 10: (k1, p2, k2tog, p2) 4 times -- 24 stitches
Rnd 11: (k1, p2tog, k1, p2) 4 times -- 20 stiches
Rnd 12: (k1, p1, k1, p2tog) 4 times -- 16 stitches
Rnd 13: (k2 tog) 8 times -- 8 stitches

Cut yarn leaving a long tail.  Thread tail into large-eyed, blunt needle and weave it through remaining stitches.  Pull all stitches tightly together and then fasten securely and weave into ends.

Really easy and very cute.  Here's the picture from the pattern (I haven't done the scarf yet):

And here's the pattern online:  http://www.michaels.com/art/online/projectsheet?pid=24193

Sorry I ask so many questions, you all are so wonderful- as soon as I get back to my college apartment (I am at my mom's house right now) I can post pictures for the first time of all the stuff I've been making! :)

I am trying to make my gramma a bracelet out of beads I made from Sculpey. Everything is fine except I don't know how to get the two ends of elastic to stay together. I tie them in like 3 or 4 knots but they still work themselves undone. What's the best way to close up this bracelet? I was thinking maybe melting the elastic together but that could also be a really dumb idea, I don't know, lol. Help! :)

My crafty steam is running out!  I've made some "i spy" snowman bags/pillows.  They've got snowman parts (hat, gloves, sticks for arms, carrot nose, ect) hidden in them.  I'm trying to think of a clever poem to attatch.  Something along the lines of finding the snowman parts in the snow (the beads that I used as fill, look kinda like teeny snowballs).  I would be eternally greatful if someone could give me a push in the right direction!  I've been looking for "snowmen poem" on google, and most of what I find isn't what I'm so interested in.  Thanks in advance!  I'll post pictures once I have them sewn shut and the poem attatched =)

I'm so excited!  Right down to the wire, but I'm now finished with all my Xmas crafting!

Yayyayyay! )

[identity profile] geneva.livejournal.com
I have been working so much lately, that I've been exausted and in a creative slump.
Today, however, I have been inspired and creative by all means and ways possible! Cooking, crocheting, sewing, collaging, felting, etc etc etc. However, this also means I have tons of odds and ends that aren't finished, so expect a long and detailed post from me soon! Haha.

However, I do have a question regarding crafting. Aside from the duct tape prom, are there any scholarships available for crafters? I haven't seen any, despite my search. If you have any tips on where to look/what they are, please let me know!

If this isn't allowed, I will delete it immediately upon request. Thank you!

I've been lurking on here for a while, but this is my first post ever. I'm also sorry to report that my first post ever is an plea for HELP!

I was sewing yesterday and all of a sudden my machine, which is normally very well behaved, started producing these HUGE tangles and loops and eww on the bottom side of my stitching. I adjusted the thread tension, but it didn't help.

I had just changed the bobbin, the thread I was using was cheap Walmart stuff, and I was sewing on knit fabric (t-shirt fabric, to be exact).

Does anyone know what could be causing this?

Of course here is yet another post about Christmas crafting :P
Nintendo controller belt )

Pac Man group )
The above two are for my game addicted boyfriend <3 The PacMan group are pottery, all thrown on the wheel, with additons and cuts made. The small things in front are a cherry, peach, pear, banana, and four power pellets.

armwarmers )
Made for a friend who is a dance major, knitted with Wool-ease thick and quick (I think), on size 17 needles.
scarf for myself )
I made the scarf back in October I think, was originally going to be a gift, but they forced me to keep something for myself, for once. Knitted with Jiffy Thick and Quick in Catskills, on size 17 needles.

I have more pottery, but I'm not sure how "crafty" it is...could I post it here?

I got back in touch with my artistic side last fall (2003) when I accidentally signed up for an art class called "The Art of Horticulture" and I had to do this final project. I decided to do a rendition of Mother Earth using the My Size Barbie I had bought my younger sister when I was in fifth grade but which she had, well, ruined. I had cleaned her up a bit and removed the rest of her hair, so I bought a wig for her from ebay and dressed her up. I just recently came across the photo on the site, and I was thrilled to see it.

She was inspired by Michael Pollan's book Second Nature and sort of represents the ambivalent nature that a "Mother Nature" figure would have about the world- she embraces destruction and life at the same time- she doesn't care when a volcanoe erupts or a hurricane destroys everything, or if there is a forest fire. I think Barbie was a really good way to represent this.

fun christmas presents!

Thanks to everyone who gave me advice on how to make a Record Clock. I finished that tonight. Here's a list of things I made my boyfriend for Christmas:

*Record Clock
*two mixed cds in modpodged aol tins
*13 marble magnets
*brownies and cookies in a mod podged shoe box
*I also bought him lots of stuff, but i'm not as proud of that.

I'll post pictures after Christmas. I'm pretty sure I'm getting a digital camera. I know some of you hate text only posts, so I promise I'll fix it.

Anyway, I hope everyone has a great Christmas!

So I've seen all this awesome jewlery on here, and um, felt kind of left out... So I made my trip to ac moore and hit up the beads section. Nothing like super reat, but I enjoied and am making more later.

Since I wasn't sure about posting pottery, here it is now, enjoy <3

Most of these were "happy accidents", meaning that i was trying for something entirely different, but I messed up and look what came out.
splat )
Was intended to be a vase, but it fell over on itself, and I saved it.

Fishy )
Fishy. Base made on wheel, scales and such added later.

Hands )
I needed a creative way to glaze this, so I painted my palms with underglaze, and got someone to help me hold it and then to take it from my hands. The inside is the same blue shade.

Blue Splat )
It was a bunch of differnt colors of blue, and a few greens, but at the end of the semester, the clear glaze had been messed up, and it came out a milky color, and messed up any other colors under it, turning all the colors the same shade. :/

Round )
I had put orange underglaze on this one, with blue on the inside, but the above problem with the clear messed it up :/

Smooth )
One of many collaborations a friend and I did, he shaped it, and I glazed it. blue underglaze on the inside ran down the sides, pooling in the bottom.

Bubble )
Blue and brown underglazes.

I've posted before. Never anything fun though. These things are older. I'm getting a digital camera for Christmas so I will be posting a lot more. It sucks when your boyfriend has a digital camera and you can use it whenever you want for free, and then you break up and you need one of your own.

I just got this tonight from one of my bestest friends, who likes to work with metal, jewelry, etc. He's massively talented, yeah? This doesn't even slightly encase his talent:

I bitched and moaned that I wanted the scrabble jewelry from uncommongoods.com, because I LOVE that stuff on the site, but a LOT of it is ridiculously expensive for what it is. So, he made it for me. I think he said the links were pieces from a screendoor, funnily enough.

In addition to that (which again, doesn't really show his real talent), he's made roses out of metal (that REALLY smell like roses), a ruler bracelet, beautiful necklaces/breacelets/belts, a liscense plate purse, and lots of other goodies. He's ridiculous. Tell him how ridiculous he is. :)
