Hello everyone!

I was hoping to start quilting soon, and I have never done it before. Does anyone have any tips or general rules I should know about? I've got a great book about it, but sometimes the best craft advice comes from people, not books.

Thanks!

Orange Cardigan
My first sweater has so far been a truamatic one. I had to redo the neck, and then later rip out 4 inches of knitting along the main part of the body because my measurements were off. Now that I am done, I am rather proud. I got the pattern from here. My variations where the longer neck, ribbed sleeves and bottom.

more pics )

Other details I just thought to add:
The yarn used was a TLC 'Ultra Soft' yarn, I used 2 strands, and I knit with a size 9 needle.

The fake 'seam' around the armhole was done by reversing the stockingette stitch (ie, purling where knitting, and knitting where otherwise purling) for two stitches.

so it would look something like
knit for x stitches knit, make one, knit purl 2 stitches, knit, make one, knit x stitches.

I got the seam idea from a baby raglan sweater I made a while ago.

Question! [raises hand] How big of a jar/glass container do you think that I would need to contain at least 100 2x1" pieces of paper that are folded in half to be 1x1"? Keep in mind that, if these were layed out flat on the floor, it would take up 8.33 square feet...Aheh ^_^;;

So that this isn't a text only post, I thought I'd also post the gun I made for my gun mage yuna cosplay last year.

I enjoy reggae )

for some reason when i knit a scarf (that's about all i can do right now) the edges curl up all the way to the center. my mom has been knitting since she was little and can't figure out what is happening. she said that maybe if i try to steam it with an iron it should flatten out, and it does.... until it cools off again. i also tried different types of yarn, and that doesn't help either. what am i doing that could possibly cause a scarf to curl up like that?

oh, and if it helps, i use size 13(9mm) needles, and i always do knit one, purl one.

Hey everyone,
For my and my boyfriend's four year anniversary I am making him a present. I have a wooden keepsake box from Joanns (like this) and I want to paint it, and on the top I am going to write the word "love" in different languages, and along the sides or maybe inside I'm going to write song lyrics from songs that are meaningful to us, and then maybe some other designs or pictures of us on the inside or the sides. So my first question is, I was planning on painting the box with some paint that I already have which I bought from a ceramic store and also like silver gel pens to write on it. Will this work? I've never used the paint on anything other than ceramics, but it seems like it would be okay, but I'm not sure. Also, the box is "unfinished", so will the paint look okay if I just paint it directly on without anything underneath it? And further, do I need to do anything after I paint it to seal it or can I just leave it? And just any general advice or more ideas anyone may have would be welcome! Thanks so much!

Hey I have a question if anyone can point me in the right direction.
Ive been knitting for a little while now, but i never learned how to Purl. Ive checked the memories and all the websites show pictures of the people holding the string in their right hand ( I have no idea about technical terms..sorry) But I hold it in my left. I think its called International maybe?

So my question is, how do i purl with the way im holding things now?
And if you can, because im more of a visual learner, post some links to either sites that have videos or pictures.

Thanks so much!!

hey! i'm back from Hong Kong and I got SO many cute buttons and ribbons as pictured above. They have a craft's district that anyone in this community would freak out over. But the one bad thing is that most fabric shops don't sell by the yard, they sell by the bolt!! I guess it's because a lot of designers go there to buy, because it's super cheap. I got the lot of buttons (there are at least 5-10 of each) for $4 and the ribbon was $1.50 for three yards. I also found some kimonos on clearance for $5 in a Japan street market so I bought one to harvest for material and one to wear. I'm so excited to start crafting after finals!!

a question for earring makers, do you seal the buttons before you glue the earing backs on? And what kind of glue do you use and what do you use to take the button hole off? Thanks!!

Does anybody have a handheld sewing machine? How does it work? I'm about to bid on one on EBay (smartstitch brand) for like 12 bucks after shipping, is it worth it? Also, I have never worked a sewing machine, so are they easy to l earn with?

Earring wire + Red Lobster Mardi Gras beads = hotness and lots of weird stares!

This is my first time posting here.

Last night, I decided that I needed a new purse, so I went to JoAnn Fabrics and bought some cute fabric and made a new purse. It looked really plain at first, so I added a little dinosaur that I just cut out of the fabric I used for the lining and strap. Opinions are appreciated!

i want to make a clutch bag but would like a magnetic fastener. the problem is i don't have one and don't know when i'll be up for hunting for/ordering some online. so: could i just make the bag and add the fastener later or should i wait (grr) and do it all at once?

Finally retiring my ancient Black and Decker iron. Looking for a replacement. Anyone have advice? Good brands?

I pretty much only use it for quilting (rarely, rarely for clothes). Need steam. Would love cordless (for ease, unless they are a pain in other ways) - but shooting to spend around $50. Thought I wanted auto shut off, but that might be a pain in the butt quilting (going back and forth from machine to ironing board as I sew). Lightweight is good for my hands. And can anyone justify why I'd spend $100+ on an iron?

Thanks in advance for your advice and experiences!
