I've looked at so many of your awesome crafty things that I decided I'd post what I just made!
It's a messenger style bag (although a little smaller then your usual messenger bag) made out of black velvety/corduroy type fabric lined with shamrock fabric. It's got a pen pocket for two pens on the outside and four pockets on the inside. The pockets on the inside are made out of regular black corduroy. The ones on the sides hold my cell phone and garage door opener. The two pockets on the inside on the back hold whatever!
I also made it a matching pipe cozy =)

I wanted to thank everybody for their help with this question - I was amazed at the response I got from everybody! Thanks so much, all! :)

In the end, I decided to go with the fake lettuce idea because it required the least amount of hand-eye coordination. Also I'm lazy. Because I was in a pinch for money AND time, I couldn't find fake lettuce (noooo!), so I improvised and pulled the leaves off of some silk flowers. Unfortunately they doesn't look anything like lettuce, but if you kind of squint at them, they resemble spinach leaves a little. And hey, I make my salads with spinach leaves, so it works! Anyway, they're green, dammit, and that's enough for me. Or at least for my foliage-eating roommate.

Everyone gave me such great ideas, though, that I may end up remaking the frame sometime with actual lettuce, or actual fake lettuce (hee hee).

Oh yah - almost forgot. The pic! Pretty big, sorry dial-up users. )

Ta-dah!

I don't carry a wallet, which means I don't really get to carry around photos in my bag/purse. However, I had received some photos of my godson in the mail a few months back and wanted them with me. Months later, while at work, I noticed that a corner or two were starting to turn from just sitting in a pocket of my bag. Terrible!

At work I'm currently attempting to not go to sleep. I'm in the middle of a very big, very slow project with lots of lulls in between processes. That just means I work for a minute or two, sit and stare at a cubicle wall for twenty or thirty. So, I bring yarn and a hook to do whatever I feel like.

On tuesday I started playing with a simple intarsia stitch. Seeing as how I only had a regular Boye hook, I wasn't going to be making a huge project. On wednesday I brought the same supplies with me. I wanted to tinker with the intarsia again as I thought it to be very interesting--both sides so different, with different textures... one with a weaving, the other with rows of bumps/ridges.

Then I noticed my godson's photo again. I immediately started crocheting. I ended up with an intarsia'd 6"x8" rectangle. I rolled and folded and whip stitched and now...

Title: A Tote!
Inspiration: I wanted to make a tote with the patch from starserge.com which I received in the Sampler a couple months ago.
Reason: This was part of [livejournal.com profile] erike's Birthday gift. I made it so he could have a pretty lunch bag tote instead of the ugly one he normally carries.
Comments: It was fun to make - especially because I had just learned how to make patch pockets in my sewing class so this was great practice for me. The fabric is pretty thick cotton twill, so I really should have done a couple things differently to make the seams less bulky. I have been experimenting with different clean finishes and I ended up using a french seam (which I know is totally inappropriate for this fabric, but I like how they look and how they finish!) So for future reference, I should use a different method for such thick fabric! Luckily, [livejournal.com profile] erike likes it and uses it everyday - hooray!

I've always been drawn towards those solid wood salad bowls from the seventies that you always see in thrift stores. Most of them are in pretty bad shape, but I found a good quality one, about 14 inches across, for two dollars at the Sally Ann. The pictures are glare-y, and the colours are much more vivid in real life, especially the pinks. In any case, here's how I gave the bowl new life:

ok, i've been commenting & such lately, but never posted (blame my lack of advanced technology for picture-taking devices).  but now here are a few things i've finished, including a pink hoodie (resized, w/a molly ringwald iron-on), a pillow made from a thrifted beatles shirt, and a lap quilt made from tshirts & old jeans & cords.

I'm trying to buy some cotton stretch material (like what t-shirts are made of) online. Except I'm having a hard time finding any, and I wonder if I'm calling it the wrong thing?

So 2 part question - what is t-shirt material called? And where have you purchased it??

My digital camera busted, so nothing new... but I felt like posting something, so here's an old one.

A year or two ago, our chamber orchestra played at a Renaissance theme dinner, and we all had to wear rediculous froofy costumes (a violinist had to wear tights [he's a guy] and our male violist looked like he just stepped out of the Monty Python Spanish Inquisition skit.) Luckily I got a really pretty costume, but it had gold trim. And I don't wear gold. Ever.

So I made this:

so yesterday I was stupid and spilled bleach down a pair of purple scrub pants, as anyone who is talented like me knows purple and bleach make pink...

anyways I was debating playing with bleach some more to make a tie-dye effect on the pants but will that eat the fabric alive? or does anyone have any other crafty solutions other than toss the pants cause while they were cheap I was thinking why not make them into fun sleep pants.

Just a quick question that i'm not sure about.

I know different skin types and such may vary, but, is regular stainless steel (beading) wire safe to use to make earwires? I'm talking just the normal wire that you can purchase on a spool in the beading area of a craftstore.

Inquiring minds want to know....

Remember my question about DIY-able, cheap denim purses? Well, I found the perfect one this afternoon, a little bigger than I had anticipated, but perfect.

And here it is. )

Wallets?

Hi,

I posted this to sew_hip this afternoon, but didn't get many responses, so I thought I'd ask here too...

I am about to embark on my first lined bag adventure. I want to make a tote for the beach. We already have one of those giant, heavy duty Old Navy canvas beach totes for towels and such, but I want one just for my magazines, books, water bottle etc, since I hate bringing my purse to the beach.

So I bought some fabric at the store today. I bought something from the home decor department for the outside of the bag, kind of a medium weight fabric. Stiffer than quilting cotton for example, but not as heavy as upholstery fabric or anything. Then for the inside lining of the bag I bought a kind of heavier weight 'ticking' fabric, which is fairly stiff.

So I asked the woman who cut the fabric if I needed interfacing for this...because even though I want it to stand up to abuse, I don't want it to be TOO stiff, you know? She conviinced me to buy some Iron-on interfacing called "Fuse-a-shade" which she said was good for bags.

Before I cut into the fabric, do you think I should use the interfacing? Or should the two heavier fabrics be strong enough when combined? The woman who responded to me on Sew_hip suggested I just do what the lady said, but she really didn't seem to have any idea about interfacing, and just told me that she thought that people used it for bags, so I should get it...is there ever any harm in using it?

I had some instructions for a record purse that looked like this....Image hosted by Photobucket.com
but I can't find the instructions, so I was wondering if anyone has them or know where I could find them.

P.S. I looked in the memories and craftster and other various sites that I could think of

thanks!
