I got a screenprinting kit: "Speedball Fabric Screenprinting Tool Kit". $46.99 at the local university book and supply.

I first experimented with using the screen filler to block out the negative space, I didn't like that so much, so this time around I used the drawing fluid and then squeeged the screen filler over it. Watching the drawing fluid eat away at the screen filler was like watching a baby being born.

Anyhow, I made this as my first print: )

Love,
Kate

PS Isn't a speedball a type of drug or something?

Hi everybody! I just have a question. I'm thinking of branching out craft-wise and trying some papercrafts. I had an idea to take pictures of places around town and make them into pretty notecards...maybe doing it for different cities? This may have been done before...I do that sometimes, where I come up with an idea that turns out to be completely unoriginal. ;)

Anyway, I was wondering if you guys knew anything about copyright stuff. I poked through the memories on copyright and didn't really find an answer to my question. Let's say I take a picture of a local pizza joint (which should be a national monument because it's so #($*&# good!). Is that photograph my property? Or do I have to have permission of the owners of the pizza joint to reproduce it?

It may seem silly, but our society is *so* litigious nowadays. It's probably pretty arrogant to think that a business would bother with a tiny in-house craft business, but you never know! I just want to make sure I wouldn't be doing something that could get me in trouble. :)

Anywho, thanks for your help everyone!

My first messenger bag:
I also used interfacing for the first time as well. I will never again make a bag without it. It helps so much in making the fabric sturdier. I also like the way that it makes the bag look more professional (then my first bag which now that I've made this one my husband says he hated the first one and didn't want to say anything... LOL so much for honesty. *poke*)
On to the pictures...

I'm learning how to be more artsy with my photography of my pieces. I like the idea of putting it on glass - any suggestions for how to make it focus better?

See here for examples of my latest work and "artsy" photos.

A very good friend of mine celebrated her birthday on Sunday and I wanted to make her something really special. Via a rather circuitous inspiration process, I came up with the idea for a fairy doll based on her personality and appearance...

Needs. More. Embellishment. )

I got rather carried away with the whole experience and added a tiara and storybook into the mix...

Every queen needs a crown! )

I REALLY enjoyed this project, in case it isn't quite obvious ;D There are a lot more pictures and a discussion of the process available at my crafting journal for anyone who is interested in seeing more.

anyone??

Happy Tuesday!

I am co-curating a show soon and we are still looking for submissions.
I'm posting this here because this community is full of up and coming artists, and I so often see work here that I think is so amazing and would love to have in my home (and I know I'm not the only one)

Here are the show details (and the flier thats circulating around is behind the cut)

- It is at a gallery in NW Portland Oregon. It would be nice if you were in the area and able to install, but it isn't mandatory

-your work for the show must be 12x12x12 centemeters or less (thats about 4.72 inches) its okay if you don't usually work *quite* that small, just explain that in your e mail

-the show will go up in December, and we are hoping to sell a LOT, so hopefully your work will be reasonably priced

If you need more details contact me.

Hi, craftgrrls, I'm completely new to sewing, and would like a little input from some of ya'll that have sewn ties before.
Did you have to use interfacing? What kind of fabric did you use that lay nicely when tied? I have a friend interested a skinny tie in pink or red satin. I think I'd have to use interfacing for this, right?
Also, did you use a pattern? Are most skinny ties in the same proportions as regular ties, or do they always widen at the bottom?
Well, here's what I'm thinking. )

Thanks so much for any input. I haven't even completed a sewing project, so I'm a little worried about trying to make anything.

Cake Topper I haven't posted here in FOREVER, but I know you guys will be able to help me (at least I hope!)

I'm getting married in 11 days (!!!) and I'm trying to figure out how to attach my cake topper to my cake. It is cut out of foamcore, so it's only about 1/4 in. thick. The rhinestones weigh it down a little bit as well.

Alright....how do I put it on the cake without it falling over!?!?!

Grommets

Can some explain grommets to me?

I bought a sort of thing that looks like a pliers but has different tips which I'm assuming poke holes in the fabric before hand, and a couple tips that look as if it's used to insert and finish the grommet itself. But...aren't grommets supposed to have fronts AND backs? I can't tell the difference between any of the 500 grommets I got with it, which goes where, or if there are any backs to begin with.

Is there such a thing as a one piece grommet (like the inner part of the grommet is folded over the back edge)?? I'm just confused here.

Inspired by moonlightgoth, I decided to make a tent for my new kitten Sami. I had few choices for boy fabric, so I went military for him! This is the first major sewing project I've done. Not perfect, but Sami loves it. I lined the inside with fleece to make it nice and soft for him. What a spoiled kitty!

I've been buying up thrift store purses galore lately and making them over, and this is one of my faves. Isn't she a darling? Le sigh indeed. The jewels around her neck and the dress-like looking straps were actually part of the purse originally...I saw it and it just looked like it needed a person painted in!

More: a felt & button clutch, XO bag, & a lovely lil' seashell necklace )

I will be running a series of self development classes and want to make projects as part of the hands-on aspect of the classes. i want to do a beading/braiding project for one module. I have about 6 US pounds of glass beads - all around pony bead size, all different colors and styles.

My question is: if you were wanting to help people create meaningful beaded items, using beads and colors that were symbolic to the person creating the items, what would those items be? Keychains, necklaces, drapery ties, what?

Thanks in advance.

Scrabble junior book

This is a little book I made a while ago and just never got around to taking pictures of. It's from an old scrabble junior board and the tiles that came along with it. I used gum strip tape to keep it all together and onn the inside is a notepad of alternating graph and lined paper.

Hey all you crafty grrls! My name is Kris & I'm a n00b to posting in this community. I have been lurking for a long time and commenting ocassionally. I have finally had time to work on some of my cratfs and such and wanted to take pics but alas my camera died on me so I shall get back to the pics later. (i made some cute baby and toddler onesies/shirts with turtles on them for some expecting friends of a friend.)

I have some questions for you crafty grrls out there. here is my situation:
I have a big city-wide party thing to go to this saturday and I was going to make a shirt for me and a bag (for my friend) for us to wear and kinda show off. I have the shirt, some bags, and a shitload of craft stuff at my disposal but I want something fairly easy like iron on transfer or paint. I am also thinking about altering the shirt possibably. [i love a bunch of the shirts at hot topic/urban outfitters but cant afford to buy every single one i like/want] and now, to the questions.
1.) any good ideas on what to put on the shirt or do to with it? (i was thinking maybe some witty quote from a movie or show along with a pic of some sort and maybe some hand stitching).
2.) also, what should i do with my friend's bag? (she is big on disney princesses and degrassi/radio free roscoe/o'grady. not very many people have heard of those shows let alone know about them.)
<3
kris

Thank you to anyone and everyone who can help and give me suggestions. i'm all crafted out and am not as creative as some of you gals. <3

p.s. here are some (crappy) pics of the onesie i made and some other random stuff i made
now to the random craft pics....sorry for the long text. )

i was going to hand paint a thin design onto a tote bag, but my mom suggested using carbon paper to first trace the design and then to paint it on. but she also mentioned the fact that if i pressed the carbon paper in the wrong place, i would have a dingy black mark that wouldn't come off. i didn't want to use a stencil since the lines were so thin - any suggestions?

<3

ALSO. i'm going to be participating at a craft fair of sorts in August [http://www.timetunneltoys.com/urban.html] and i'm selling tote bags and jewelry. i'm trying to think of a creative way to hang my jewelry, preferably not on a frame. any ideas? they're kind of crazy jewelry so i was thinking of doing it theme oriented like i have dinos, hotdogs, hamburgers, fries, and some charm earrings. and i have charm necklaces i'm putting on a jewelry rack and such. are any of you guys going to it?

Heyy, I just started summer camp (it's a musical theatre thing) and we have to wear these boring old black t-shirts with "Summer Place Players, University of Hartford" written across the front in white letters. The staff said we could do whatever we want to the t-shirts as long as they remain black and dont expose our stomachs , and I wanna do something interesting, but I'm drawing a blank.

I already took one (we each have 4) and cut off the collar so it was off the shoulder and wore a red wife beater under it. Anybody have any ideas for something not too hard I can do to spice up my uniform a bit?

I've made a new bag.
It's bigger than the other ones i've made.

I went garage sailing the other week and bought a music wind-up crafty thingie that plays "love story."

It's a really really pretty and romantic melody. I bought it thinking that I should surprise my boyfriend with a musical home-made something for our 4-year anniversary this September, and I was thinking along the lines of a spinning snow globe by attaching the music guy to the globe and putting something really personal and adorable inside of the globe. Eric found the "thing" and he ADORES its melody and plays it every time he's over, so now I can't back down.

I saw these: http://www.nationalartcraft.com/subcategory.asp?gid=6&cid=37&scid=55
Seems perfect, but how would I attach the music guy to the glove and make it work and spin?
