Hey there! My name’s robyn, and I write and edit for an online magazine, www.subter.com. I’m looking for some good writers to help me out with writing a weekly column on diy stuff … I’d like it to vacillate between diy projects and cultural info, from reviews of independent businesses to … well to just about anything. As this is a weekly column, I’d like to have three or four people willing to write me an article a month, so no one person is responsible for coming up with something every week. Your articles would have to be between 750 and 1000 words.

Please e-mail me at robyn.charles@gmail.com with a writing sample if you’re interested!

okay so yesterday it was raining and so i got seriously bored and finally decided to get crafty. After a few hours of procrastinating and a quick run to A.C.Moore, I finally painted my little 4 year old cousin who obbsessed with trains' present. And i really like it.

Also i never posted this but i made another cellphone charm with some beadsmy art teacher gave me.

so i also did the 52 things challenge, but since it was for his 31st bday i just did 31 things.. and i didn't use a deck of cards, i cut colored card stock into 4ths. i didn't bind them either, i left them in a stack and tied them with a bow. at his request i've scanned the whole thing and uploaded it, you can view it here:

I saw the 52 things that I love about you idea posted here and decided to take on the challenge.
It took me a week, mostly because I work all day and my boyfriend is only at work 3.5-4 hours after I get home! I had to be super sneaky, but it paid off in the end!
I was even lucky enough to find a box at Michael's that fit the finished deck perfectly.

I love making stuff but I'm a bit shy (and still trying to figure out lj cuts) so I haven't posted any of my stuff here before, but I decided to take the plunge. Here is something I just made now while watching 'Neighbours'. Read more... )

Hey all, i have a question. My boyfriend recently came back from Florence, Italy with a pretty gold coin that he thought i could make a charm out of, but it doesn't have a hole to string from, and it's double sided. How would I make a reversible charm from it without a hole? I would wrap wire around the diameter of it but I'm afraid it would fall out.

didn't see much of anything about rocks in the memories (other than tumbling, that part i already know how to do) so.... does anyone here work with rocks to make jewelry? my boyfriend loves collected and tumbling rocks, and i love making jewelry, and it just recently occured to us that we could combine those into a pretty sweet little business. we've got tons of polished stones to work with--some large and interesting enough to stick a finding on and string on a necklaces, but i would love to try and break some of them up into smaller pieces and do more elaborate work with them. so i have several questions...

1. once i break the rocks up, will it be possible to drill holes in them, to string them on to something?

2. how do i do the drilling?

3. where do you all get your findings for stones? i've never seen anything like this as the craft stores (michael's).

4. any other advice for a beginning working with rocks?

I speak spanish fluently and my neighbor has decided to pay me to teach her 8 year old some spanish. I've taught it a little before, so I know in what order I want to teach things. I just need a little help thinking of fun ways in which to teach them.

I'm going to make her a felt name book like the one I've seen here with spanish words as well as naming all of the little extras and the colors and stuff in small fonts in the book. I also have plenty of ideas for teaching objects, animals, colors, time, numbers, etc. I have plenty of material and games/activities for those, but I need some suggestions for fun ways to teach the following, which I'm starting tomorrow:

Greetings
Like hello, good morning, good afternoon, good evening, goodbye, see you later, etc

Small Talk
How are you, I'm good/so-so/bad, nice to meet you, what is your name, my name is_______, etc

I was thinking about making some comics with characters she's familiar with, like from shows or cartoons she watches, like using MSPaint to copy paste them into comic frames and give them blank talk boxes and have her fill them in.

I don't have the ability to get videos from the library or books from a bookstore right now, so I've got to come up with stuff I can do with just the two of us. I want to help her learn, but I definitely want to make sure that the things I do are fun, too. I don't want her to veg out in front of the television with Plaza Sesamo or Dora the Explorer, which she's too old for anyway. I want something more active, even if it's just writing or coloring or something.

So... any other thoughts for teaching just the Greetings and Small talk?

Does anybody know of a website or store where I can order custom fabric? we are interested in a light cotton sweater fabric, with a pattern design of our own making on it.
Also, what would the price range be? I would imagine a bolt would cost upwards of $150 or so.

Thanks!

A couple of friends and I were talking about setting up a deaf ladies' retreat in the fall of 2007.  We were talking about doing crafting sessions during "free time" for the ladies.  The women would be of various ages, possibly as young as 12 and as old as 90.  If I do go ahead and do the crafting sessions, I would be responsible for getting the supplies myself, using the money out of my own pocket.

I'm planning to make a proposal on what kind of crafts, but I'm at a loss to what crafts would be good for all ages, and still hold their interest.  It would also have to be cheap. And easy for anyone to do.

Things to consider:
Ages: 12-90
number of women: possibly around 10 to 30
and CHEAP supplies...as cheap as possible (because I would be paying for it!)

I do jewelry but I'm not sure about the older ladies (possible arthritis).  I don't have enough tools to help everyone (I only have one set).  Bulk beads would be no problem for me though.

I was thinking bookmarks (for bibles), pillowcases, simple jewelry (without wires)....

This is a Christian retreat and it would be nice to have something to remember this time with.

Suggestions?????

Sorry if this is all confusing, but I got a migraine coming on...:(

Thanks soooo much!

* Sorry for the crappy picture, it's from my Etsy shop and Etsy doesn't always like my photos...by the way, the fabrics in the picture are a multi-colored stripe and Harry Potter *

1 - Does anyone know a craft store (or any store) where I could find dried lavender and other dried herbs besides doing an internet search? I have lots of dream pillows to make (see picture). :)

2 - Has anyone ever sold their crafts at a yard sale? If so, what were the results like? My mother's having one in a couple weeks so I'm starting to gather some things to try and sell.
