Save the Children
Sep. 7th, 2006 11:26 amI don't post here, but I enjoy reading the posts. Now there's a project that I hope that some of you crafty people would be willing to pitch in on. There's an organization in the town were I grew up, called Save the Children. They are a really good organization that is dedicated to helping children in the US and throughout the world. They are not affiliated with any specific church or government.
The purpose of the project is to reduce the mortality rate of newborn infants throughout the world. Save the Children is asking craftspeople to donate infant-sized hats they have knitted or crocheted by January of 2007. For this project, called Caps to the Capital, Save the Children is collecting these hats. In January of 2007, they will take the hats to the President of the United States where they will show them as an example of a low-cost, effective, means of reducing newborn deaths. After the meeting, they will send the hats to areas of the world where a warm hat is one of the simple things needed to help a newborn infant survive its first few days of life.
There is more information, and also some hat patterns, in the Caps to the Capital Action Kit (.pdf file).
