gourds?

there was an entry in the memories about gourds but it didnt really help me.

ive just found out that those weird looking kalabas thingies they sell in the store for decoration, can be hollowed out and become really hard! what a great discovery i thought, but now i am just really confused.

everywhere it says to let the gourd dry before hollowing it out. but how on earth do you know whether a gourd has dried or not? yes when they are hard they are dry but i find that fresh pumpkins are really hard aswell how do you tell the diffrence?

when you buy a gourd at a plant store (not as in on a plant but they sell them loose. ready to put somewhere for decoration) is it dry allready or not? i personally dont think they are yet but i quite honestly dont know how to tell.

any tips on hollowing out gourds that i should know? (i know i should probably wear a dust mask of sorts but thats all)

i dont want to make a birdhouse by the way (i live on the 4th floor and i dont really see many birds here at all, besides the birds that do fly here would most certainly not fit into a gourd) but rather id like to try to make a drinking cup!

Started out life as a plain, strapless gathered skirt dress.
Commonly seen on bridemaids and promgoers during the 80's.......and 90's....

Another complete teardown.

Ok kids, Im hoping someone can help me out here. I want to make a journal of sorts and I was planning on using a premade scrapbook. My original idea though was to do an altered book type thing, but the scrapbook appealed to me because it would be very easy for me to move things around and rearrange at a whim.

This is very important to be able to do!

Then I got to thinking how I dont really want to use something premade. I want the book to look old, and scrapbooks you get at Michael's, ACMoore, Joanns, etc etc just look so new.

Any thoughts on how I can have something that looks (is) old (like a really old altered hardcover book) while still maintaining my desired ease of reorganization?

No one is cuddlier and more scientifically sound than Darwin, it just seemed natural to make some screenprinted pillows of him.

My new mixed paper journal. This is the ultimate girly journal. It's bright and cheery and the all the paper is light enough to see what you wrote on it.

New member here, I looked up this community just so I could ask some questions to you more experienced types out there. I have this (incredibly nerdy) costume I want to make, and I need a little help. First, the picture. (hope this is appropriate)

Sorry about the ramble. If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know. I'm sure I can figure out most of the sewing, but the hat and cane I'm going to need some help with. I have a bit of dowling I think I can use for the cane, but what should I use on the top? I don't have to make the the exact same topper, but I want something that'll last being hauled around. Thanks :)

weeelll.. remember how I asked if anyone knew if it would be possible to put a new glider onto a zipper?

well I went to my dry cleaners, and they said they could do it for $20..

so, then I went to Joaans and this wonderful lady working there gave me the idea, of just buying a cheaper zipper in the color I wanted, and cutting the bottem off and taking the glider off. So I did it and
TA-DA! it totally worked and my jacket zips up once again!  =]

So I bought the new 2nd generation ipod nano last week. And I didn't see any cases specifically for my nano...I only saw the ones for the old nanos which would not fit mine. So I made my own!!

Here are some costumes that I made for my kids. The pirate is very loosely based on Jack Sparrow. ;-)   D will have a wooden sword, but that isn't complete yet. I still need to add some beads to his pirate hair. His costume was made using a mixture of 4 different store bought patterns. Details of that are on my blog.
