I teach a beaded jewelry making class at a college - Ive been making a website resource for the class. I thought Id share with everyone how to make nice looking loops for dangles. This is something that I frequently find people have trouble with.

.mov, without audio here

I hope it's helpful for some of you! (Tools used = bent nose/flat nose/chain nose, then round nose and of course, cutters)

I haven't had anything new and crafty to post for a while so i thought that, instead, i'd post a piece of artwork.
This is a portrait of my mom's boyfriend's dog, Snoopy, that I did as a gift for last christmas - 5x7" clayboard scratchboard and ink.

enjoy! )

I found this hot glittery ribbon at a yarn store a few weeks ago, and just knew I had to use it for something.

The result:
Disco clutch

Disco clutch!

You might not be able to tell in a photo this size, but if you enlarge the photo at Flickr you'll see all the pink, blue and yellow sparklies coming out in the light. I lined it with pink satin, and sealed it all off with a pink zipper. It's probably my favorite thing I've made in a long time. :)

OK, I made a pretty big maternal sacrifice for my daughter: I ate 18 snails just to acquire the little wooden bowl they were packaged in, plus their enormous pretty shells.  (Escargot bourgignon, if you're curious.)

I saved 17 of the 18 shells (I dropped the first one because it was hot and greasy, and it cracked on the tiles -- GROSS! GROSS! GROSS!).  The shells are soaking in hot soapy water at the moment, to get the last of the butter out.

My question now is... "now what?"  The bowl is easy: it's a Pet Shop Jacuzzi, as far as my DD is concerned.  The shells... one of those "this looks cool, let's put it in the stash" kind of things.  I'm thinking the easiest way to work with them is to use a hot glue gun.  The shells are easily 1-1/2" across, from opening to back end -- not your garden variety snail.

Thoughts?  Inspirations?  I'm coming up with "Fairy Lounge Chairs" and "Easter Egg Hats"... but eating snails is NASTY.  Anyone got less-than-kitschy ideas for the shells, to make the creation worth the culinary experience?

Edited to add:  MY THANKS for all your suggestions!  I never even thought of Ursula's voice-capturing necklace.  I think I have just the shell for it too: it's got a hole in it in just the right place for a ring, or whatever you call that thing that lets you string rocks onto necklaces.  (A lot of the shells had suspiciously round holes in them that had been plugged up with some kind of caulking, which I only hope is food-safe.)  I'm not sure why I was surprised at the number of notification emails with all your comments, but I was. :-)  I'll post pics in a couple of weeks -- or whenever...  I seem to be getting hit with inspirations, and then quickly after feeling them fizzle out with no action taken. :-(

Hey crafty folks.

I'm making a pinata for my daughter's birthday... I've already made it and painted it and all of that, but before I go cutting into it to make holes for hanging and before I make the flap to fill it, I wanted to make sure if there's anything I need to know first. That way, I don't ruin it.

details + pictures: )

I've made a pinata before, but it was a class project 20 years ago when I was in the 1st grade and I can't remember how to go about putting the flap in.

So I'm wondering if there's a particularly fool-proof way of going about it. Reading a how-to, it said that I need to make a 4" X 4" flap... but I just don't want to break the pinata or something drastic like that since it's practically done.

Any advice you can give me? Please??

Thanks ahead of time.

Hello ladies, I found a wonderful 50s-bag while thrifting, it's made of some rubber-y material mocking ostrich.

After I cleaned it (it was quite sticky and dusty), the stickyness did not disappear and it doesn't feel nice at all...

Has anyone suggestions how i could get rid of that?
I just used regular soap and water.
Thanks in advance, I'd honestly love to wear it and I'll definitely post pictures, as soon as I can touch it without going "ewwwwww" ;)

edit: Thanks so much! I know what I'll be doing the next few days ;)

Alright ladies (and gents), I've got questions regarding copyright type things. I'd like to sell some decoupaged objects (boxes, trays, perhaps light switch covers too...) but wonder about the legalities regarding that. If I use pictures from calendars or magazines, is that allowed, or is all that copyrighted? And what if I buy paper from somewhere like Paper Source that has a particular pattern on it; are you allowed to sell objects made from it?? I'm so afraid of stepping on copyrighted toes...

And so this isn't text only, there are pictures of other stuff I've been making behind the cut! )

this is a bracelette I made for a new friend of mine.

It was my first loom job. So I know the future ones will look even better.

I made my son a pillow lastnight, we both love winnie the pooh, so I used some winnie the pooh fabric I had, and iron on hem tape to do the seams (since I can't sew) and polyfil for the filling. It turned out really well, and my son loves it! excuse the crappy sheet that covers my chair in the background.

Well hello ladies, and lads (i'm sure there are a few around, right? ;) ) I was just thinking about making my BFF a necklace that had to do with one of her favorite things, Fight Club. Maybe it would be in the shape of a bar of soap and have "fight club" on it...and then it punched me in the throat: why not just make her soap? So, in my fit of brilliance (ah ha, ah ha) I thought of making her pink soap with the words "Fight Club" carved into it. (I looked in the memories, and maybe i'm dense, but I didn't really find any help...)
so, to my question:
How would I go about carving the letters into it? Or should do it reversed wise, and have the letters imprinted into the soap, which i would also be a novice in doing.
I've never made soap before (I figured i would use a kit, y'know) so I'm not sure of what to do, any suggestions? Should I make a mold, and if so, how? out of what?

I would make this un text-only, but I have yet to upload any pictures of my recent necklaces and I don't really have the time to do that now. So hopefully soon! :D

thanks muchly, loves.

I really hate my first post being a text-only question, but that's how it goes. =/

I have a lot of jewelry pieces that I would like to photograph.

What I want to know is: Are there any special tips you have to make this go a lot easier?

I've taken a few sample pictures with my camera on different settings, and it's just not working. I have a suspicion that natural light really helps, but are there any other simple tips to make the true essence of the jewelry stand out like it does in real life? I've thought of a light box, but I don't really have the materials right now; if it comes down to that's about all I can do, I'll try to set one up this weekend.

Thanks for any help you can give me! A better post will come soon; I promise.

It's made in kidsilk Haze by Rowan, so it's very soft to the touch :-)
