fallonmay.livejournal.comSo, here's a question that possibly has never been asked here before.
I am looking for a way to make menus that doesn't involve plastic. Any ideas?
It's mostly just fantasy at this point but I'm hoping to start a restaurant and one of the things I'm trying to keep out of it as much as humanly possible is plastic (I hate plastic...HATE IT. It is not sustainable and we can't recycle for freaking ever). Obviously, laminated menus do not fit in with that plan.
My two ideas thus far are...
Iron-on menus on cheap fabric. Possibly stuffed (huggable, plushy menus...with googly eyes) or mounted on something else.
Pros: Fairly cheap and quick.
Cons: Menus tend to get dirty damn fast (though these could be made washable the pain-in-the-ass factor comes into play and iron-ons do eventually crack and wear out, but what doesn't?). And if there's any grease what-so-ever the law of the universe dictates it will somehow manage to get on the fabric and look ugly. Plus there's the issue of disease transmission, which is more possible with these.
Notes: I played around with the idea of screenprinting and then remembered a little thing called my sanity.
Woodburned wood plaque menus, sealed with something nontoxic but washable. Possible sidework for servers: polishing menus. >D
Pros: Solid, can last for a damn long time if taken care of properly, easy to clean. Can also make into book-like menus that are strung together with twine.
Cons: That's a lot of fucking woodburning. Woodburning, party of 50? Any volunteers?
Notes: Maybe cutting with the dremel first (or just period, and then do a darker stain on the letters?) then burning? Possibilities...
And...basically the thing about menus is that you have to expect change. Prices go up, items become unavailable, certain dishes don't fare well and have to be replaced or simply discontinued. They get dirty, bashed by kids, dropped, thrown (yes, thrown...though maybe working at Denny's scarred me for life), left where they shouldn't, sneezed on, coughed on, puked on and set down on nasty tables that the busser forgot to wipe down.
You really don't want to think about or spend a lot of time on them when it comes down to it but I am totally willing to go that extra mile to keep the plastic out (plus I think it would be hilarious to screw menu changes onto the wooden ones, even though that would make them too bulky/annoying to be possible, but still the idea amuses me).
Another thing I was considering was that if I used paper or wood in some manner I would like to make them nice enough that instead of dumping them, say if the menu changes or something, I could give/sell them to customers (incorporate some artwork, etc...). 'Cause keeping them out of dumps would be nice.
...sorry that was so long. Thanks for any help.
