i made two diagrams for making crochet hats and mittens to help out a fellow craftgrrl. someone recently posted about crochet hats as well.

i hope these can help out someone else too. they aren't prefect, but if you know how to crochet you should be able to understand these.

i can't read patterns, and i just came up with these myself. so if you don't mind general instructions, proceed on to the diagrams )

Ok, so I took the top off my jeans a while ago and the zipper pull came right off so now I am looking for something to hold the jeans together that is fairly durable and cheap. there was one suggestion here a while ago but I couldnt find the item that they were talking about. I have looked at velcro and those little snaps but they dont seem the best. Should I just try to replace the zipper?
Thanks :)

if i did more than just soap (lotions and the like) i would be all about bidding on this auction.. lots of plastic containers for lotions & perfumes and stuff. still pretty low price, too, and reasonable shipping.

however, i was looking for beeswax & lip balm supplies, and didn't find much. anyone point me to a good online store?

So an idea just struck me..

Last year the women in my family got a basket with candles, bath salts, etc. I didn't go all out; I'm ashamed to admit most of my gifts were store bought with hardly any thought put into them. A site just inspired me to give women a spa basket with ingredients like cucumbers, honey, oatmeal, etc. That's when my idea came to me; I'll include a little booklet in the basket of all my fav diy bath recipes.

Soooooo I'd like you all to share, if you will, your favorites (and if you could, what type of skin they work best with). I'm looking for right-out-of-the-kitchen stuff.

Please and thank you!

hi!

so I'm working on my first hat. I've knitting lots of scarfs and other random rectangular objects before, but have not had much luck with hats. I'm trying to make the Kitty Hat.

I seem to have problems purling, which is something I've never really done before. My stitches keep on ending up realllly tight. Also, when I knit in the round, it seems like the needles are too short for the hat, and the band is getting stretched out, or the wire is bucking out between stitches. But stitching it on DPNs seems like it is really cramped. How do I start out? Any suggestions?

Also, I've never used DPNs before, but have given in, and was wondering if someone could give me a (very brief) run down on how they work, or a link to someplace that I could learn?

Also, any kitty hat tips? I've tried to get started three or four times, and keep on not being able to continue... and I've promised hats for people, too!

Talking to [livejournal.com profile] yoniyum under [livejournal.com profile] peeling's post about using the memories got some stuff kickstarted. Between her and I we set up a little web form to record various entries for categorization for eventual addition to the memories.

Well, [livejournal.com profile] craftgrrl is an awfully large place, with over 1,600 posts in a little over a year and over 900 members. I'm trying to find volunteers to help sort through the posts and add them to the list for memories by using this web form.

Also, if you can think of categories we(ok [livejournal.com profile] yoniyum listed almost every one of them ;) missed, drop a comment here.

So, if you have good crafting links, submit them here and we can get them all set up for the memories. If you really want to be a star, help go through some of the (1600+) archived posts and put them in the form =) The more help we get, the fewer we'd all need to do (if we cover them all) and the faster it'd be done.

Thanks everyone. This is an awesome community!

Anyone know how to make linen spray?

A warning

I notice that lots of people are making lip balm lately. Here's a warning about certain essential oils.

Be very careful when using citrus essential oils (orange, lemon, lime, grapefruit, tangerine, etc.). They contain a chemical that reacts with sunlight and can cause your skin to burn, which would be especially painful on the lips. Using it in small amounts combined with other essential oils (such as peppermint) will give you a little bit of sweetness and won't do any harm as far as I've found. However, it's best to avoid their use in products that will be left on the skin. Using them in cold process soap, as far as I've been able to tell, either reduces this effect or enough of the oil is washed off so that it doesn't do any damage. I'm not sure if melt and pour would yield the same results, since the soap doesn't get as hot. Heat might help "damage" the oil's effect.

You're now returned to your regularily scheduled programming.

hey everyone!

i've been lurking for a while (hard to post craft pics when you don't have a camera) but wanted to let you guys know about something i've been doing that's not crafty so much as it's crafty organization.

a lot of times when i'm making things from other people's recipes, i change ingredients and measurements as i go, but forget to right them down. then i've forgotten what's what by the next time i go to make a new batch. i'm sure you all know the disappointment of inconsistancy.

so here is my new solution: i got a box with alphabetical index (you can make these on your own or buy them pre-done) and am writing down all my recipes on 4 x 6 index cards. i've also written down product info (what's good and not for various projects). so far this has been a huge help to me, plus it's nice to have all your recipes together in one place!!

hope this helps someone else!!

while im there, I should splurge and get some little boxes for my friends. But how many? Eh

question

Okay now my question has to do with beading on a loom.
It says not to make your string too long because it will get tangled up..the one you put your beads on and string through the beads...Anyways I broke thr string last night and t says to just retie one on there so I did, but the string kept sliding everywhere and such. so I ended up taking my pattern completely out and starting over. I was so frustrated.
What type of string do you guys use so that it doesn't slide everywhere and how do you start your pattern on the loom?

Oh yeah and i need a pattern for a unicorn, anyone know a place to go where I can get one? thanks.

See now I know that was not what I originally set ou to ask..but oh well.

I also need a pattern to make hats. I need to make a hat for a 2, 4, 6, and a 8 year old. Any ideas? Because I know that the hats are not the same size as adult hats.

Anyone know of any free patterns online for full, shortish, vintage style full circle skirts? Preferably really easy patterns, I don't have access to a sewing machine right now. Honestly, there should be somewhere to rent them for an hour or two. Thanks.

This is my first pic post of one of my projects, I sorta needed help doing it. I am into petroglyphs and this shelf was the end result of that interest. You can't see the top of this shelf because off all the junk I have on it, but it is black and white checkerboard. I still need to paint a design in the green bands at the bottom, ( the various designs also appear on the bands of color on the sides that you cannot see in the picture). I also have some mosaic projects half done that will appear here sooner or later.

Mason Jars

So I found a few projeccts to do with Mason Jars on here and I called my mom and asked her if she had any laying around I could have. She was like *Oh my God, I almost threw out like 100 of them last week*. So my mom apparently has alot of those laying aorund too. How much do you think it would cost to ship those and such? Becuase my mom has alot of them and she says all I have to do is wash them and probably buy tops and lids for them...But I mean if anybody is interested in any of them, let me know and if you pay the shipping and such...I will be more than happy to mail them to you. I will proally be going to get them on my next day off and I will wash them and let you know about them if anyone isinterested in them.
Thanks...

So, yeah. This is my first ever post on here, even though I am constantly in awe of and inspired by this community.

Basically, I have a question. I am trying to teach myself to knit and no matter what I do, my stitches end up too tight on the needle and the stitches look very uneven. I am having a really hard time figuring out how to keep the right tension.

Does anyone know of any GOOD online resources that can help? Or does anyone have any advice on how to make this easier on me?

Thanks!

I also painted this table top several years ago, to use in a coffeehouse I ran. Not only am I into Petroglyphs, I am also a HUGE collector of sun faces. So, when time allows, I make my own, like the sun/moon pic I painted on this table. I just love to take old beat up furniture no one wants and make it live again with paint. My own brand of recycling. Heh

One semester when I had taken all of the "turn your brain to mush" classes I could handle, I took an art class. I had this cool art instructor who taught us how to make a form of painting he developed himself called a Mobius Flow. There is no beginning and no end, there is no dominate color. In other words, it is a picture that is equally dark and light (in the case of my picture, equally black and white). But you can use other colors too, so long as one half is dark and one is light. To make the pic you take a photo that has clear shadows on one half and put a piece of tracing paper over it. People pics work best because the contours of the face create the shadows. Instead of outlining the features, you outline the shadows and fill them in with the dark color. Then you take the tracing paper proof you have made and transfer the shapes onto a solid color canvas, (or whatever you want to put it on) that you have prepainted in the light color. After you transfer the shapes there ( I used dressing making carbon paper to transfer them), you fill them in with the dark color you have chosen. The picture develops because the shadows you have colored in make you see lines that are not there, not because you highlighted the features with lines. In fact, the trick is to create absolutely no lines, only shapes.... and the light areas have to equal the dark shapes in volume. Once you get the hang of it, it is addicting to make these, and they make great low cost gifts. People love getting one of themselves. Better yet, you don't have to be a great sketching artist to do a picture like this.
Here is a mobius flow I did of my mom )
If you look at it closely, you can see her glasses and her eyes even though no lines create them. The picture is equally dark and light, neither color dominates the picture. This is a must have feature for this art form.

a few days ago there was a post about "altered books" and I was wondering if any of you are into it? have pictures?
it seems that most websites (as linked here and in the altered books community) about it are basicly the same and most of the altered books look the same.

so, I am looking for new ideas and inspiration that does not involve paint from stencils, teabags, yarn or goldprint. my own ideas are as far away from that as possible.
I am a colorful person and I am making my old Jack London book into a small reflection of me. the theme is Women with a focus on women I adore, like and want to be.
