unrelatedly, does anyone know a good place to find verigated yarn, like a website or something? i can only find the basic rainbow kind, but i really enjoy knitting with it. so easy and fast, and yet good looking, oh its great.

So I went on the Hunt for Marble Magnets this week -- caving into the trend, and all that :)

First went to Ben Franklin. All they had were itty bitty flat backed marbles (maybe a 1/2 in at best, and that might be a generous estimate) and ones that were about 1.3 inches wide that weren't very round at all. I bought the bigger ones, but they were too big for the magnets I have.

(I did find some great hi-strength magnets there, at least, for about $1.99.)

So next stop was Michael's -- same thing there! either really small (and irridescent to boot) or ones that were about 1 inch or so. Those worked better than the Ben Franklin ones because they were 1)actually round and 2)smaller enough to almost fit the magnets.

This leads to my main question -- how big are the ones that people are finding and having success with??! If it's the smaller size, how in the world are you finding pictures that fit?

Hey, does anybody quilt out there?
I need some help. I am using "simply cotton" (kinda like warm and natural) as my batting on a quilt. Usually I do crazy quilts without a batting so this is my first experience. My question is this.....I have finished both the front and back of the quilt. I washed all of the fabric before I started sewing to get rid of shrinkage....here's the problem, this "simply cotton" says I need to hand wash it in the tub to get rid of the shrinkage. I only have a shower......can i do the batting without washing it first, and if I do, will it completely distort the quilt when it gets washed later?

i am going to make some of those rice heating bags for everyone for xmas, and now that i am sitting here at work freezing my buns off i think i will be making some for myself as well.

I have tried to find the perfect glue for the marble magnets and I can say that I found one that I am REALLY pleased with! It's this stuff called Bond 527. We bought some of that E6000 (or whatever it's called) when we were at my mom's...so we could make magnets there. That stuff is gloppy and drippy and just plain BLAH! The Bond 527 works very very well. It is a clear cement type product that is VERY strong and it seems to be a LOT less messy.

Just figured I would pass that info along to save some of you the frustration of what we just went through!

has anyone worked with rezyn before? i plan to make my friend a lamp for christmas and plan to make lots of rectangular squares of rezyn with comic strips in them tied together with a strong wire...any tips before i attempt to do this without any prior experience?

Well for my economics project for this quarter, we have to sell products to the school. I'm in a group, and we're going to sell crocheted (sp?) and knitted scarves, woven bracelets, etc.

i will finally be taught how to crochet and knit! woohoo!

Hi everyone.
I have a directions from a website that I don't remember that I once printed off the internet for Hand Warmers. They're cloth bags filled with ceramic pie weights that you put in the microwave to warm your hands.

Instructions: Cut out two 3-by-5 inch rectangles, sew together on three sides, leaving a 1/4-inch seam allowance; cut off corners. Turn bag right side out; fill with 1/2 cup pie weights. Blanket-stich all sides with embroiderly floss.

My problem is, the fabric it tells me to use is soft wool or heavy cashmere. I'm a vegan, so I don't use either of those. Does anyone have any other suggestions for me on what fabric to use to make these handwarmers?
Thanks in advance for your help :)

All of my auctions for the MANY mint-condition soap and toiletry making books end within the next 8 to 21 hours. Most of them are still at a low-price so there's still time to get a fantastic deal! This herbal bodycare book has no bids on it yet, so snap it up! All of these books are worth at least $14 new, and some are worth as much as $23.

Check them out while you can!

so me and my little man (who's 7) are learning how to knit, from a class at the library :)
our class got cancelled today since its snowing like a, well....a LOT. but i have a couple questions and thought someone here could answer them.

{we're doing just a flat piece, with what is probably a very basic stitch. it's going to end up as a bag, eventually (lol)}

~how do you count the numbers of rows you have?

~somehow, it looks like it's getting wider...is this possible? and how could it be doing this and how do i fix it? or is it supposed to do this?

thanks!

Just wanted to share how I've been productive on this very snowy day! (Especially since classes have been canceled!) What do you guys think?

This striped bag is so cute, kind of narrow so it has kind of a classy look to it. I experiment by putting in a pocket and using ribbons for handles. This wouldn't be an EVERYDAY bag, but its cute nonetheless.

I'm almost tempted to keep this one for myself! I love the fabric that makes up the lining and the overlap, its soooo soft and the colors are amazing. Its almost summery, but who cares!

They will be for sale on my website http://www.americanjewel.net!

sorry about the crosspost

Hey ladies,
Someone posted about using the marbles for push pins....I had a great idea at lunch...how bout using them on the end of nails. For example, I have a mirror that hangs from a chain and you can see the ugly nail the chain hangs on. But tonight that nail will have a pretty marble on the end! You could use all of the marbles that are scratched or the ones you accidentally bought that were iridescent (i did this). Anyway, just an idea for those of us who have marble madness fever!

Astroturf

alright now, I want to make some stuff out of astroturf, but I'm having a hard time finding it. I remember seeing a roll of it to use like as carpet at wal-mart a few years back for $15, but I haven't seen it there since then. Got any ideas of where I could find it? Please help!!!

Here is the almost finished Birthday present for my mom. I'll be adding some fringe at the bottom and then the actual necklace part soon. I call her the subway goddess because the coin in the center is an old NYC subway coin (I still need to use some brown marker on the threads that are holding the coin down so they will blend in) and my mom rides the subway to work everyday.

so.....

With all the discussions of homemade soap, salts, and other "smelly things" (as my social group sometimes jokingly refers to it), it made me wonder if anyone here has ever made homemade incense sticks.

I now suspect that essential oil may play a part in their production, but I'm wondering what else?

I know this is inappropriate for the community and I'm truly sorry. However, I am seriously strapped for cash for holiday gifts and the supplies to make them, therefore, I am selling my beloved Smith Corona Sterling typewriter. I have no ebay account to sell this but I am in desperate need for money. Sorry about this. I appreciate any offers. The typewriter looks like:

I went to Wal-Mart today to pick up some polyester pillow stuffing...stuff and ended up with a bit more than I had expected ;) This ALWAYS seems to happen to me..hmm. Anyway, I got some camouflage fabric so I can make something for my cousin (who is obsessed with everything related to the army), some blue ribbon (which I desperately needed), and some really cute fabric remnants that I was able to convince myself that I desperately needed ;)

I also saw really interesting-looking yarn. It was made by Lion Brand and it was called Homespun, I think....it's just regular acrylic yarn BUT it's crimped all over and it looks really weird and interesting. Anyone used this stuff before? I was tempted to buy it and then I remembered that I don't even know how to knit yet! Oh well. Soon.

Oh yeah, and when I was looking at the pillow stuffing...there were two brands, seemingly identical, but with a $1 price difference. The saleslady said she had no idea why one was more expensive than the other so I went with the cheap one...but has anyone made pillows before and noticed a *difference* between two different brands of stuffing? They looked exactly alike o_O

Alright, that's all. Just thought I'd share.

Crossposted...

I really hope LJ starts behaving better soon.

Anywho, I've got two questions:

1. I'm looking for someplace in the Portland, OR area that has a good selection of cosmetic grade or better essential oils and/or fragrance oils. I've been to JoAnns, Michaels, Craftworld & the health food section at Fred Meyer, but I need more of a selection...

2. How do you get menthol scent into something??? I want to put it into bath salts. I've got some menthol drops from Watkins that are in a denatyred ethyl alcohol base. Would that work?

I went to a ethnic store recently and I saw a little tin box with a glass covering, inside was a loteria card and above it was a clear half marble with a skeletons face on it. It looked really cool!! I am thinking about doing this with my box. Just making the marbles and not puitting magnets on them and gluing them on to a box. It looked cool man!

I made some knitting needles just now:

I had bought the wood a while ago but I hadn't gotten around to actually using it... I wanted to make my own just because, but also because I don't rilly like metal or plastic needles, so I was hoping wooden ones might be to my liking. I think I like them.

I just whittled down the tips with a big buck knife I use for opening envelopes and then I used two grades of sandpaper to smooth it all out, followed by a good rub on a pair of denim jeans. They're pretty smooth, though maybe I'll try using a wax to make them smoother.

For the ends I used some little Hello Kitty figures I bought a bunch of a while ago. I drilled a small hole in the bottom of the figures and at the end of the needles and then I used a segment of a paper clip and superglue to hold it together. Hopefully they won't be going anywhere.

Anyway I knitted with them a little before I put the ends on and they felt nice. Oh, the are 13's, 12 inches long.

Hello...I am new. :::waves!:::

Out of curiosity, has anyone here ever made a scrapbook out of their livejournal? I am thinking of doing one (sort of like an annual...and maybe doing it again next year). I am thinking of using aged-looking paper & stuff like that. Anyway, that is what is in my head...a keepsake that I can thumb through.

finally finished my altoid tin (along with tons of aol tins which I haven't scanned yet). I wish I could've gotten a better image of it but this will have to do.

I finally got my *Readymade* mag. Its cool and it has really cute ideas that I like but crafts are more my thing though.Imma hand it over to my husband and see if he can make the for sale Lamp that was in the fall issue heh.Anyway.I haven't felt like doing crafts the last couple of days but I have seen some cute ideas to do with the marbles I'd like to do though.

I am so happy! I finally made a bear hat! I decided to try one for me first.............since I just finished making my daughter a regular hat (the one with the little bow on top). Here is how it came out!

By the way, I do NOT use patterns. I have no clue how to read them. The stuff I make is strictly off the cuff.
[identity profile] exitwounds.livejournal.com
yay, i just got a new issue of readymade magazine in the mail (oddly enough; i'm not a subscriber and i already got my free issue, shh), and i have to say i'm really digging the stuff in this issue. i thought it was pretty funny they were making cardboard furniture; i just had to finish an art project concerning cardboard boxes and i wound up making cardboard beds. :)

but they also had the swelted winter hats and i was so inspired i made one out of a shrunken fair-isle turtleneck sweater i bought at old navy two winters ago (the pattern that i think is a tulip-shaped one, aka the one with the "thingie" on the top of the hat.). it's so adorable, i wish i had a camera to show but this pattern is supereasy and superfast.

just thought i'd mention it! (longtime lurker, btw. hi!)
