CPSC, Pace Products Inc. Announce Recall of Children's Soap Making Kits

WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Pace Products Inc., of Apopka, Fla., is voluntarily recalling about 145,000 children's soap making kits. The soap may get too hot when heated in the microwave oven and leak from the tray mold posing a burn hazard to children.

CPSC has received three reports of burn injuries from the heated soap, including a 6-year-old girl who received burns to her hand.

The soap kits were sold under the name 'Soap Making for Kids." The kits include a plastic mold tray, three bars of glycerine, string and an instruction book. "SCHOLASTIC INC." and "Made in U.S.A." are printed on the back of the soap kit box.

Scholastic Book Clubs and Book Fairs sold the recalled soap kits at schools nationwide from March 2000 through November 2002 and bookstores sold the recalled soap kits from March 1998 through November 2002 for about $8. Consumers should take these soap kits away from children immediately and contact Pace Products at (800) 541-7670 between 8 a.m.and 5 p.m. ET Monday through Friday to receive instructions on returning the soap kits for a refund. Consumers also can visit the firm's web site at www.paceplace.com.

I went to a thrift store yesterday and they had about 10 AOL TIns for sale. For 99 cents. I laughed. No tins for me. heh.
WTF was that about? How can they sell something that is totally for free? I dont get it.

Just because I want to comment on it somewhere!

* Finished a 4-strand single-crochet blanket I've been working on for a while. It's big, it's *heavy*, and it's at work for when I get cold. It got put aside several times in the last several months for other projects or just general laziness. After finishing up the rush of Christmas gifts, I determined I would pick it up and complete it before proceeding any further. Now that it's done, I can do that!

* Still plodding along on my first knit sweater. It's a very simple pattern, worsted weight yarn on U.S.:7 needles--ribbing on the top and bottom, and a long swath of stockinette stitch in between. Front and back are identical pieces, and two long sleeves. I'm about 12" of 19" (bottom to armhole; yes, I'm very tall :) into the body of the first piece. It's taking foreeeeeeever.

* A small Gold Collection cross-stitch of a lighthouse--partially done, but probably will be alternated with sweater making.

I have a few more projects waiting in the wing, most cohesively the Scarf that Wouldn't End, and more soapcrafting ideas are bouncing around undone in my head...

Gothic Martha

This is a cute site that I stumbled on a couple of years ago. All the talk about Martha made me remember it. I thought Martha lovers and haters alike would like it.

These are the first two things that i've cut and sewn from patterns since I was a freshman in high school (almost 10 years ago! Oh my god!), so forgive some of the mistakes.

This is a baby winter outfit. I know it'll still be cold in February, so she'll be able to wear it. It seems so big, though! I wasn't exactly sure how to line the hood (The linking and trim were not in the pattern) so I winged it. I don't like the fact that you can see the seam in the back of the hood and if I make another, I've got a much better plan to line it, but this one will stay like this, since I don't feel the need to rip it apart.
baby coat-type thing )

And, a little purse. It turned out pretty well. I wasn't paying attention when I was making it, and ended up grabbing the part for the bottom and sides and sewing it together like it was the strap. I didn't notice my mistake until I'd turned it right side out and pressed it. Then, when I put the lining in, I ended up with the strap inbetween the purse and lining. You live, you learn, huh? =)
I think the outside is a little plain, so I'm trying to think of something to remedy that. I've thought about a little patch or applique, so I might pick one of those up when I go to the store again.

I have to admit I love this place! :D All of you are so talented, and have wonderful ideas! I haven't seen much on polymer clay though. I love working with it. I know it's not as popular as it once was, but I enjoy it! I thought I'd share some things I've done... see my creations )

Since Valentine's Day is coming up, I've been sitting trying to think of ideas that i could do for my boyfriend and came up with a few things....

I have 2 yards of dark blue fleece that I bought to sew the edges and make into a blanket for us to cuddle up under that I'm going to give him... I'm also going to sew him a pillow case out of this cute fabric that i bought that has clouds and some silver shimmer to it. I'm thinking of lining the edge of it with some pretty white ribbon and taking some fabric paint and putting a short quote about dreams or something. I'm also going to make him some chocolates out of these Valentines molds that I bought, and I'm thinking about buying some material that has guitars and music notes on it and covering a binder with it to fill with guitar tabs that I find to his favorite songs so he has a book of them.

I'm still working on ideas to do for him.... i'm thinking about making some chocolate sauce for our v-day night *grin* I'm still working on ideas of things to do for him though... but so far I've got some ideas to keep myself busy :-)

I'm also working on making some belts for my friends... I finally went through my bag of assorted ribbons and found 2 that are similar in design but different colors, and I'm gonna get some D rings and sew the ribbon on them to make belts! I'll post pics as soon as I get them done hopefully :-)

It's a sad day for [livejournal.com profile] craftgrrls everywhere when my step-daughter comes to my house with her Brownie Girl Scout vest (she had 2 badges she wanted me to sew on for her) and I take a look at the triangular badges her mother already sewed on..... with 3 stitches, with a LOooooooooooong stich on the back between each corner....you get the idea.

To make things worse she said that some girls have their badges GLUED on. Oh heavens.

I just finished my first project!!

This one has been in progress for a few weeks. It was just a spray painted mini Altoids tin that I had no plans for. A few days ago it began the transformation into a pocket shrine. Though it didn't take me much time to plan it out once I had the idea, it took longer than I thought to get it together. I used Modge Podge and had the thing sitting on my desk which is in front of my super drafty windows so it didn't dry quickly at all. I later moved it.

I couldn't get the picture for the inside to the right size and couldn't think of anything to put around it to cover up the silver metal so I slathered on some MP and dumped black glitter on it. After that was dry (took a day) I put on more MP and let that dry. Then I put the picture and other things on. The rhinestones weren't originally going to be there, but I thought the top looked too plain and monochromatic and then decided to carry the them inside. The broken CD piece was added because I cut up two CDs to see how it worked and needed something in that space.

The shrine is to Cthulhu--probably H. P. Lovecraft's best known creation. I recently got on a Lovecraft/Cthulhu kick so it makes sense for me to have a shrine dedicated to the guy :) My roommate knows nothing about Lovecraft or Cthulhu and when she saw the tin sitting on the table in the living room (one of the places I moved it to dry) she asked and I told her it was a pocket shrine. My roommate is not crafty in the least and has no idea what one is, nor did she ask. She's also pre-seminary. I think she thinks I worship some strange octopus god now :)

I could explain a couple of things (both about the process and Cthulhu), but I'll spare ya'll the details. If anyone wants to know, though, feel free to ask.

Anyway, here are the pics. )
