I made a glove today for a costume I'm working on. Just one, not two..the second one I'll tackle tomorrow, I guess. ;) Anyway, it was hard and a lot of cursing accompanied the sound of my sewing machine and it's SLIGHTLY too big for my hand...but I still like it.

Sooo I found out yesterday that the love of my life is moving to England for a year, and he is leaving in 2 weeks. I'm quite sad as you can imagine.
But on a crafty note, I would like to put together a little package for him to take along. There are already several things I know I will be putting together for this, but I'd like the opinions of those who either live in England or have spent a significant amount of time there. What sorts of things would an American student need? Is there any way I could send him with postage or a decent calling card, or are those things that should be purchased there? What necessities are outrageously expensive there that are relatively cheap here (besides cigarettes)? He will be in York, which is in northern England if that makes a difference... thank you.

Does anyone know an insanely easy way of making faerie wings and what materials to use? Simple is the key.. I don't know what a lot of sewing jargon means. I don't even know what interfacing is. hehe. Thanks.

patching

i was wondering if anyone knew any techniques for protecting patches. i have vintage embroidered patches made out of thin thread, & they definitely will stain & wear quickly if not protected before being sewed on to something [i'm thinking about sewing them onto a bag, so that's even extra activity]. so i really need to find some way to protect the material before the projects.

any ideas?

If it's not there already, can we make a FAQ about wings? It seems that there are a ton of posts about them. I have posted several times with my techniques, and I will post again if it will be added to the section. Thanks!

i just bought a badge a minit 3 in 1 bench press combo. if you're looking for advice on what brand of button maker to buy.. i say do NOT buy badge a minit. some say it's good enough... but i do not like it. for every button that i finished that came out -OK-... one came out totally unwearable/unsellable. only ONE came out PERFECT!
and that's just too much money to be wasting. im selling this one and trying the Dr. Don's one everyone raves about. seems to be more sturdy and produces better quality buttons.

DOWN WITH BADGE A MINIT!

have any of you ever made your own Ouija Boards? If so.. how?

how would one go about making paper stiffer? i want to make origami boxes for xmas gifts out of book pages [to put on dressers or desks and such] but i want them to hold up to wear and tear. also aside from plain old painted wood beads...what do you suggest i use as a handle?

p.s. i am working quickly on the inspiration links. i can't find a decent enough bookmark keeper so i'll just set it up on my site and hope my host doesn't leave soon lol. if anybody has a better solution i'm all ears.

I just found this Turkish spindle that's being sold for only $10!

The nifty thing about turkish spindles is that when you're done spinning it, youjust pull off the little cross-arms and you instantly have a ball of yarn that you can pull from the center. ^^

I thought some people might be interested in this.

Hey, I'm relatively new here, and I have a quick question. I checked the FAQ and couldn't find anything, so hopefully I'm in the right place! Anyway, I bought two fairly expensive Express shirts a few months ago that I only got to wear a few times before they somehow got bleach stains on them. They are still very wearable except for the bleach stains, so I was thinking that maybe I could dye them and possibly the stains wouldn't show up anymore. Does anybody know if that will work or will the bleach stains still show? If the bleach stains will still show, does anybody have any suggestions on what can be done with the shirts that doesn't involve cutting them up? They are really cute and fit well, so I don't want to just throw them out.

As for something a little more crafty than that, I am in the process of refinishing an old vanity of mine. I bought it for cheap at a used furniture store because it was very pretty, but it was painted a horrible white and blue color. I'm in the process of stripping off the paint right now, and I plan on either staining the whole thing pink or just staining the top pink and painting the rest of it black. I can't wait to finish, but I have to work outside and the weather has been pretty crappy lately. Anyway, I'll post pictures when I'm done!

Thanks!!

I just reconstructed this t-shirt tonight. It was a regular plain t-shirt, and I made it into that like, 50's halter look. I probably should have used polka dot fabric instead of RIBBON. They dont look that great, but here goes..

ha ha ha...i thought you crafty folks would get a kick out of this. i had to make a model of grendel's mom from beowulf for my english class. needless to say, she is a beauty. she's made out of pantyhose stuffed with polyfill, green acrylic paint, raffia painted green, red paint, black paint, yarn, and two giant sequins for eyes :)

i carried her around all day. she's my baby.
should i take her to college? this could be dandy fun.

love and the beauty of grendel and his mother,

does anyone make planners or know where i can get one from a DIYster??

I decided to dive in and try my first reconstructed T-shirt. It was pretty plain to begin with, and is still pretty plain. But I think it's much cuter. Now to hunt down other shirts to re-create!

This is my first time using the LJ cut tags in another journal...so hopefully this works. If not, the pics are in my journal as well. ;)

Sorry to make this another post, but I couldn't imagine replying to ALL of those comments I got previously.

I get the basic concept of making faerie wings, but how do you put the nylons over the wire? does one leg go over one wing? If someone had pictures.. I would be forever greatful. ^-^
