Jan. 26th, 2004 12:23 amSo the skirt is going well. It's almost done.
What I did:
1. Sewed squares together in faintly trapezoidal shape. Well....it turned out more like, 5 squares on the top row, 6 on all the other rows (5, for a total of 6 rows).
2. Cut out trapezoid shape from other skirt onto my lining material.
3. Traced and cut out lining shape onto sheet of squares.
4. Sewed lining together
5. Sewed square sheets together.
6. Folded top edge down to make a tube for the drawstring.
7. The only thing really left to do is to put in the drawstring, and hem it.
It also helped that I had a good snow day to work on it.

Delete if this has been posted already but has anyone seen the new aol boxes?
At least I think they're new. They're wood! That's right wood. Really beautiful, flip top wood. I got two :) I am totally painting these to hold my jewelry or something. Or to make new cd cases or something. I'll edit to post pics some other time. Anyone else seen them?!

The detail isn't very good on that last one but that's the wood showing in the corners there. It is very very sturdy :)

Crochetted rug problem
Jan. 26th, 2004 06:50 amI decided to make a crochetted area rug. And it's starting to piss me off. I mean, it started out at 24 inches, and about six inches later, it's about 22 inches wide. I'm using different fabric strips to make it, so that might be my problem. Does anyone know how to keep crochetted straight things the same width apart the whole way? Or possibly how to widen the middle once I'm all done?
PS: Starting over is one option, but I just can't bring myself to do it yet.

License Plates
Jan. 26th, 2004 09:48 amMy mom had to get her new tags for our vehicles, and she just decided to get new plates. So mom left me with 4 very nice license plates. What can I do with these? I'm at a lack of inspiration.
how to hang easter eggs???
Jan. 26th, 2004 09:48 ami'm starting to freak out about easter because of the hundreds of eggs i decorated last year. They are sitting in a storage box and I'm afraid they will stay there unless figure out how to finish them. I never got around to hanging them because i was never able to drill a clean, round hole(s) into which to insert ribbons for hanging.
8 out of 10 times i tried to drill a hole (with my smallest drill bit -- the smallest available from my hardware store anyway) the eggs cracked. (I am using real eggs which i blew the contents out of). The holes were originally created by poking a needle through them.
can any one help with a suggestion?
thanks!

Felt Xmas Stockings. Glue or Stitch?
Jan. 26th, 2004 09:54 amLots of questions today. I didn't see anything about this in the archives.
I also need some unfinished xmas stockings. (I am way behind). I've cut all the pieces out (from felt) and i need to assemble them.
The first decision is whether to glue the pieces together or to stitch the whole thing together.
Glue seems like it would be faster, but i don't want ridges or ripples when the glue hardens. Is there a special glue i could use that won't distort the shape or darken the felt (I'm using all colors -- light and dark).
thanks for your help.

i love arts and crafts
Jan. 26th, 2004 12:53 pmthis is my feb mail art piece for my yahoo group. i did a shaker box.
i love the little confetti hearts that "float" around.
i used photoshop to write "love" in several languages with different fonts.
the back has red glitter outlining some of the hearts, but it's hard to see in the pic.
i had fun making this.
Carwash Scarf??

working with vinyl?
Jan. 26th, 2004 01:30 pmI bought some vinyl from the fabric store this weekend. It doesn't have that wierd furry padding on the back. It also is slightly stretchy. I wanted to cut some 2" wide strips from it, so I traced the back with a ruler and pen, then cut it with a box cutter.
This is my problem: It's coming out less straight than I would like it - it's not all raggedy but you can tell that it's not a total even cut either. Is there a better way I can get more professional, cleaner lines from it?
Also, I've been sewing them together by hand. It looks awful!! Think wired-on-coffee five yo. However, I am sh*t out of luck since I do not own a sewing machine. Hand sewers, do you have any reccomendations for non-crappy hand sewing? What type of thread, etc. I want to do a little decorative embroidery...is regular cotton embroidery thread ok?
Finally, if I do have access to a sewing machine (be kind, neighbors across the street!), is vinyl easy to machine sew?
Thanks!

I want to paint on these white flats that I bought at the thrift store. They're man made white leather type material. I have acrylic paint but I don't know if it would peel off. Has anyone tried this? What kind of varnish have you used?
Thanks!

Jan. 26th, 2004 03:34 pmMy friend's birthday is coming up (Fed. 3rd)
So I wanted something pretty quick, easy, and cheap I could make her.
I finally settled on a journal or possibly a tampon case.
I wanted to put a picture of a pin-up girl or a 30-40's type looking girl on the front and then having the words "I like it dirty" or "maybe I like to look cheap"
so...my first question: How could I find those pictures? I could find them on the computer but if I printed it out,it wouldn't look too good. So could someone help me with that?
second question...how would I go about making a journal? I honestly don't have that great of an idea.
I just wanted a hard cover and back, then lined paper in the middle and I was going to write weird funny phrases and quotes on random pages.
so..could anyone help me?

Valentine's Day Beading
Jan. 26th, 2004 04:50 pmIn my most recent magazine of Beadwork, I found this pattern for a valentine's day stitch...which I decided to do.
Behind the cut I put a picture of it...how far I have gotten so far.
I am thinking of doing bracelets and necklaces and handing them out to some people for presents...instead of candy.
I dunno.
I was thinking I could do it with other colors too.
It is not the best picture...blame my $20 digital camera, but it gives you an idea.

how i spent my snow day.
Jan. 26th, 2004 06:24 pmi made my first felted hat!
it came out... okay. not amazing, but certainly not as disasterous as i was expecting my little experiment to end up. it took two times through the wash to shrink. the first time it hardly did at all, and so the second time i didn't pay enough attention so it shrunk up a little too much, but it still fits the average hu-man sized head, so that's all that matters. i know i could have avoided this by making a swatch and running it through, but i never make swatches because i'm an ass like that. it's a little shapeless, but with the help of some ribbon.. my roommates and i have decide it's rather mary-poppins-ish.
i don't hate it, but i don't love it. they can only get better from here, right?

Patterns and Valentines Day
Jan. 26th, 2004 06:28 pmSooooo...I bought these patterns from WalMart about 6 months ago, and I've never really done anything with them. They're patterns for Spaghetti Strap tank tops. New Look *Easy 6873 size A 6-16 , for juniors. Now, I am a size XS-S in regular clothes that you would buy from the store. So now I come to my question about patterns..
How the heck do you figure out what size to use?
My friend suggested just holding the pattern up to you to figure out what size to use..so is it possible I could do that instead of going through the hassle of figuring out measurements on the chart? I tried taking my measurements and when I compared them to the chart I got like a size 8 for bust, size 6 for back-neck to waist, size 6 for hips, and size 14 for wasit. Needless to say, Im totally confused.
Secondly..
My boyfriend is in the Army and currently deployed over seas (again) ..So what are some V-Day gifts I could send him? Right now Im baking him some heart shaped short bread cookies for him. Any suggestions?
Thanks!

Jan. 26th, 2004 06:35 pmfor all you marble magnet makers out there [and i know there's at least one or two ;)]...i bought the february issue of martha stewart "kids" today simply because it had a TON of small images great for making marble magnets...i've already punched out about 30.
and then i got home and read thru some of the craft projects in it, and they are TOO CUTE! so i defintiely got my money's worth! pick it up if you're near a magazine stand.
p.s. my apologizes to the martha haters out there...i'm usually not a fan either, but today, i just couldn't resist all the little pictures!

Getting Started Beading
Jan. 26th, 2004 08:28 pmOK I would like to start working with beads.
Where should I begin?
What are the main supplies that I would need? Any books (preferably with easy projects to start with first) I might need?
I went to Michaels and the local bead store today and got so overwhelmed. I thought you all might know better than I what to look for first.
Thankies in advance.
xoxo Rayne
