hey girls :)

i'm looking for some ideas & i know you guys would be the ones to ask :) both my boy and i are going on trips and won't be together for valentines & we won't be able to talk for 8 or 9 days. so we want to write letters to each other before hand and open 1 or 2 for each day we're there. it was his idea actually and i think it's adorable :) so here's the deal! i need some topics to write about or some ideas maybe instead of letters because i know after the first couple of letters i'll just be repeating myself over & over again. so ANY ideas would be greatly appreciated :) thanks so much!!

I am making this giant grey afghan for my boyfriend using just double stich, but he said he wanted me to put a white skull and crossbones type thing in the center of it. Does anyone have a pattern or something to do that?

Thanks for you help!

Ok, first I'd like to thank everyone who answered my post about taking apart a clock. Thank you alllllll!!!
Second, this makes a GREAT gift because, really, you can only give so many marble magnets (heehee). I made a pirate clock for my bf for our anniversary. I'm really really sorry I don't have pictures, but it's already wrapped, plus I have neither a scanner nor a camera, so poo.

Anyway, here's what I did:
1.)First, I used this site http://www.hgtv.com/hgtv/dc_furnishings_clocks/article/0,1793,HGTV_3430_1372723,00.html as a guide-- the instructions are pretty basic.
2.) I went to Target and bought a clock for $3.99- they're over by the frames/mirrors section- plain, black plastic clock with a white face, black hands and black numbers.
3.) I unscrewed the clock from the packaging (it was just screwed in to the cardboard to keep it in the box, i guess), then, if you look at the BACK of the clock, around the big circle bit, you see that the plastic face-cover is held on by three plastic knobby-things poking through three small notches in the black plastic part (the inner circle's side) of the clock (You'll see what I mean when you look at the clock) Take a TINY screwdriver and GENTLY push the clear knobby things inward and upward. Do one knobby at a time- you'll have to finagle them a little. (It gets easier from here out, I promise!)
4.)Take off the hands- the top one (second hand) will unscrew, but you'll have to twist it a bunch (it WILL come off, I promise) REMEMBER HOW THE HANDS WENT ON THE CLOCK!! This makes re-assembly SO much easier. Draw a diagram, line them up, whatever- I didn't and I spent 15 extra minutes lining up the hands, popping a bettery in, taking them off, until I figured it out :(
5.)Take out the cardboard clock-face (with the numbers on it) It should lift out, but in the center it will be stuck to the black plastic with some tape-like goo. LEAVE the goo on the plastic- you can use it to stick your new face on later.
6.) Use the face as a guide- cut out whatever you want, just remember to leave a hole in the middle for the hands. (I colored the circle black, cut out letters and spelled "A Pirate's life for me" and added pirate-y decoration for my bf's present, then photo-copied the thing so it looked nicer)I made mine more sturdy by gluing my photo-copied pic onto some stiff paper (manilla folder) and cut it all out with an exacto knife.
7.) I spread some mod podge onto the plastic and stuck the new face onto the plactic part, but that's only because I didn't have any other glue. It made little bubbles, and I had to keep smoothing them out, so i HIGHLY reccommend another type of glue- or better yet, THIN double-sided tape.
8.) I painted the clock hands with red nail polish, but this step is of course, optional.
9.) TEST out your clock BEFORE you pop the clear plastic face plate back on!! Make sure the hands don't run into each other (mine did and I had to bend the minute hand a little)
10.) Re-assemble your clock!

Sorry if the directions seem condescending, but I learned EVERYTHING the hard way with this damned thing, so I wanted to be incredibly specific. Let me know if anything is unclear, and HAPPY CLOCKING!!

my second amulet bag. done with horizontal netting stitch, with 2-drop peyote for the strap. I used amethyst chips for the dangles. the pictures don't really do the colors justice..the bag is a deeper, more shimmery purple than it appears in the pics. my old webcam just can't pick up dark colors very well anymore.

prices

Hi all,

I'm in the beginning stages of opening a store in my area, where I'll sell my candles, soaps, painted furniture, and other crafty things.

Here's the thought that just occurred to me: There is a store also in my area that sells lots of painted things - all the same sorts of things I make and sell. Tables, chairs, etc. The style isn't quite the way I like to do things, but you get the idea - there are some definite similarities.

I've only been in the other store once, but once was enough to see that her prices are through the roof. A few hundred dollars for an old chair that is now painted all kinds of funky colors, etc. I'd never spend that much for that sort of thing, but apparently somebody does because she's been there for several years. Story has it that she's a doctor's wife and does this as her hobby, so maybe if it's not very profitable it doesn't matter to her.

I like my furniture. I like the things I paint. But I don't think they are worth several hundred dollars. I plan to keep my prices reasonable, so that people can actually afford to buy my things and enjoy having a unique piece of furniture. But now I'm thinking - what if people assume since her stuff is so much more expensive than mine, it's inherently better? What if no one wants to buy my stuff because I'm only asking $40 for a table that she might ask $300 for?

Any thoughts on this would be appreciated...

hey- I'm new to this community (also l.j.) and I just started knitting. Since i'm a beginner, I'll be starting with scarves, but eventually i'd like to move up and create something similiar to this...
I'm guessing the pattern would be easy- because there aren't any sleeves. Any experienced knitters here that can tell me whether or not i'll need 5 years of practice before i can make this? Thanks!

p.s. great community! you all have such amazing creativity~

Hi!

Well everyone has been talking about valentines and lots of you have said you'll be making cookies or candies for your love, my problem is that my boyfriend was diagnosed with diabetes just before Xmas, he loves cookies and things but I can't really make them for him as he can't have sugar, does anyone know of any recipes for diabetics or have any ideas for food-related valentines gifts that don't contain sugar? I'm a good cook so I don't mind if it's a difficult recipe!

Thanks!!!! <3 (x-posted)

Oh my darling craft girls (and gents)! I need some ideas cause I'm bone dry.

One of my very very best male friends moved all the way across the country from Los Angeles to Florida after graduating college. He works nights as a news producer, and sleeps during the day. He knows no one out there, and can't really meet people due to his schedule. He is a hilarious man. Very smart and funny, well read, likes baths and movies, loves music (Jason Mraz, Glen Phillips and Toad, Wesley Willis, RANDOM stuff), and had his heart broken very badly right before he moved, just like I did...

Anyhoo, I want to send him a kind of cheer up care package thingy. We talk for 3-6 hours just about every other weekend, but I haven't seen him since June and I can't get out to FL till April or May. I want to send him things that let him know I'm thinking of him, and that will amuse him in his loneliness. It also needs to be stuff that will be easily shippable (is that a word?) and cheap since I'm ass broke right now.

Oh yeah, and I'm totally falling in love with him but can't tell him yet. *sigh*

SO! I am calling on you wonderful people to help me out with some ideas for my dear friend. Thank y'all so very very much in advance. I heart this community. :)

so for valentine's day I'm making my boyfriend a "message in a bottle" type thing like the ones on www.timelessmessage.com...

my problem is that first I don't know what I should use for paper. I was thinking maybe to just take computer paper and make it look old by burning the edges and coloring on it, but do you craftsters have any other ideas? also, I'm stumped for a message. I'm guessing i'll just have to write something myself but I want to include a really nice lovey-dovey quote as well. any suggestions?

thanks !!
[identity profile] madam0wl.livejournal.com
You may know what I'm talking about- the 80s snap clip barrettes that had thin ribbons wove throughout the top with ribbon trailing down ending with beads?

I've got an urge to make some for a friend's little 3.5 yr old, and bought the supplies but can't seem to get the weave part to look right or stay in place.

Anyone have links to pictures or steps to follow?
I've tried to find something online, but no luck yet.

Thanks much.

Edit: I came up with something later, see here

I'm planning on making a doll (not a Barbie-like doll, but a plush one) of Ragetti, the one-eyed pirate from 'Pirates of the Caribbean', simply because I'll soon have a bit of time on my hands and want something to do.

I want it to look something like the doll in this picture (you may have to copy and paste the address... oh, drawing by the lovely artist, [livejournal.com profile] bri_chan ). I don't want a rigid and lumpy doll, I want a soft cuddly plushie, heh. What's a good way to go about doing that? Should I cut out two gingerbread man shapes and sew them together? Or should I make the legs, arms, and torso and head seperately and then sew them together?

Thanks in advance.

i'm in a creative block. i have a really cute plain white small tote with tan stitching. i want to spice it up a little bit but i dont want to go overboard. the inside is lined with a cute bluish flowered pattern. any ideas? i don't really like bold "LOOKATME" stuff...i'm looking for subtle. keep in mind im in college in the middle of nowhere and my resources are limited :)

I just thought I would share this because I know my friends will be laughing at me about it soon.

I had two leftover toothbrushes, and since I have a huge test to study for, I decided instead to make bracelets out of them. So I boiled some water, and got my heavy duty leather welders gloves, and a can of campbells soup to help bend them around.

It all went fairly well, and after about 10 minutes I had bent them into the shape I wanted. I just dunked them in boiling water and fished them out after a minute or so with pliers or a chopstick, and bent them a little bit at a time. So eventually I had them made and they were bent completely around end touching end.

I slipped the still very warm bracelets on my wrist and was very proud. Then an hour or so later, I decided to take them off. Heh. They were easy to slip over my hands while warm because they were still pliable, but after cooling I could not for the life of me slip them off. I finally had to put dishsoap on my hand and then pull them off, leaving red marks.

No one was home, but it's too bad I didn't have the whole episode on tape, especially the last bit of me dancing around trying to pry the damn things off my wrists without breaking them.

Hi, I posted earlier tonight asking for pictures or steps on how to make 80s ribbon barrettes. After doing so, I took a couple more stabs at it and finally ended up with something I liked and which looked similar to my early grade school memories.

For those of you who have been following The Crochetted-Rug Saga, you will know just how pissed I am. My first attempt came out with weird edges. So I pulled it apart and started over, only I made it wider this time. I used ALL the cloth from the first rug, plus about a third as much, and it's only like, six inches long. And I've been working for about eight hours.

This is awful, my finger is bruised, I'm getting a callus, AND my finger has an indentation where I've been holding my crochet hook. My mother wisely said it would "puff back out" eventually, but it's been two hours, AND IT HASN'T!!!

Stay tuned for more of...

...The Crochetted-Rug Saga.

PS: Does anyone know how to do the lettering where the capital is big, but the rest of it is still capital letters? I forgot what it's called. But it would look VERY cool as the title, n'est pas?

I was trying to be sweet and make a cute valentine's day present, but it didn't work out at all.

I had these red glass cubes from the dollar store that I had planned to etch the sides of and turn into 'grown up building blocks.' (My fiance is a geek, he'd appreciate it.)

Unfortunately, they're from the dollar store, and the red is PAINTED ON! It peeled off with the masking tape. This along with the etching not being too visible without a light background or actual lighting behind it... I may just scrap the project.

My only alternative right now would possibly be to build some sort of lit display to put them in - but then I could only etch one side of each cube (the lighting would push the opposite side through and muddle which letter was supposed to show.)

*sigh*

(Sorry about reposting/deleting, LJ is lagging and I thought the first one didn't post.)
