For all you marble magnet fiends, I was at Michaels today, buying supplies for my first ever batch of marble magnets, and the marbles were on sale. They're usually $2.19 or so per bag, but they were on sale for 4 bags for $3!!! I have enough to last quite a while. Be forewarned, everything is on sale. You will not get out of there unscathed.

I was kind of bummed, though, because they only sell 3/4" magnets, not 1/2" or smaller. I called my local Joann's, and they don't have anything smaller than 3/4" either. Are you all buying the 1/2" or smaller magnets at Michaels, and my local store just sucks? I'd be especially interested if anyone in NW Washington state has a supply for the smaller magnets. I'd hate to have to order them online and pay shipping for just one item, but they just don't look as nice with the magnet showing around the edges. I went ahead and got them anyway, and these ones will be fine for my family's use, but I'd like to make some to give away.

Oh, and thanks to the brilliant member who discovered the "household glue" aka caulking for this project. It works like a charm, and no toxic chemical fumes. That's especially nice since I'm doing this with kiddos in the room.

Has anyone used anything like THIS? I'm curious because I have a few projects I want to do, but my sewing machine is out of commission at the moment and the idea of handsewing my projects just doesn't sound too fun.

sorry if this question has already been asked, but I want to run out and buy some today if the stuff works okay! :)

I recently got my first car - which is pretty sad considering I am 28. Anyway, this opens up a whole new realm of crafting. I was hoping you folks could give me some good ideas. As of now there is no easy, in car storage other than a small glove box. Some pockets on the backs of the front seat would be helpful. I have a two year old and could use places to put diapers, toys, etc. I would also like to do some things that were functional yet made the car a little more personal. It is a dark green, escort station wagon. I know I am a mom, but I wasn't ready to jump into the station wagon phase yet. I need to make the car a little more hip. I am also a new driver, so the only thing I have come up with so far is a binder for directions. I am decorating a binder and then I am going to go to map quest and print out to and from directions for anyplace I can think of. On another not-so-crafty note, I was wondering if anyone new where I could get a key chain or stickers or somehting with Dori on it - the fish from Finding Nemo who has no short term memory. She is my driving mascot becuase I am kind of directionally, memory challenged and when I get in a scary driving spot I sing "just keep swimming..." That may make me a dork, but it saves me from freaking out and getting in a wreck. Anyway, any help is appreciated.

I have recently noticed people going to local vintage/thrift stores and altering clothing. I love to alter books and assemblage art work. I found a website under http://www.annlivyoung.com/realdealenterstore.html

She makes jewelry, clothing, scarves, etc. using the same type of artistic no rhyme or reason collage type method. The problem I have is that I can't afford her art work/clothing. Does anyone out there know of any books, designers, or links that I can learn how to alter used clothing or recreate items using vintage/used clothing the way Ann Liv does?

I have examined her blazer, chicken and Irish skirt, rapunzel scarf, and underwear bag and although it seems that ANYTHING GOES..TEAR off a blazer arm and add a new one, there appears to be a technique and style.

Thank you SAGE for helping me post.

Hi crafty persons,

I have a lot of old letters and postcards that I hold onto. I can't bare to throw them away, but I wouldn't mind using them in crafts and altering them.

Any ideas what I can do with old letters, postcards, photographs, etc?

Hey i got a decorating question for all of you girls and guys.

My prom may be 2 or 3 months away but i have my dress already. Its pretty plain, a black strapless, flairs out at my waist, and goes to my knees. It has hot pink netting poking out at the bottom and a little lace detail at the very top. I tried finding a pic, but anyone who has the march issue of Seventeen mag, look on pg 179, top left corner is a pretty god idea of my dress.

Ne ways, now for the question(s?). I want to decorate it because it looks really plain. I only got it for $17 at Burlington Coat Factory. I just want to know what i can do to decorate it. I was thinking getting rhinestones but i dont know how to arrange them. Does anyone have a pattern or an idea?? Then i was thinking of getting ribbon and putting two strips just underneath my chest or around my waist. Because i think it did have something there, its just missing.

Im going to JoAnns today to get some more ideas and maybe buy something but if any of you have some ideas that would be awesome.

Thanks!

I have this scrap of really cool brown fabric and I want to make a wallet. I found this one: http://www.quiltpox.com/patterns/wallet/ in the FAQs but I was looking for something with a change section. Perhaps one that I could use a button with because I don't have any zippers on hand. I also want it to have a credit card section but I think I could add that into it if I saw directions for one with a change compartment.

Thanks in advance!

Can anyone help me with the instructions on how to make those fabric flowers that I've been seeing all over the place?

I attempted to make one, but I have a feeling that I'm doing it all wrong...

Thanks ♥

i was wondering if anybody knew some sites with good diagrams and instructions on making corsets for the first time? I'm not sure which type I want to make yet, so any sites like that would be extremely helpful. thanks :-)

Remember the movie James and the Giant Peach? Seems like he made some type of origami/balloon/lantern thing, stuck a candle in it, and it floated away. Well, now there's a new Hummer (as in the car) commerical with the same thing going on. Anyone know of any instructions, or what they're called?

hello all. i don't remember if this is my first post or not. well anyway, hi. for those of you that have made stuffed animals, i have a question. you sew most of them inside-out and then turn it the right way and stuff it right? but what about the last couple stitches? what's the trick to making it look as though it was all sewn from the inside?

I came over this crib blanket really cheap and it's very nice since a friend of mine is pregnant, but I figured she already have a lot of those (or will get even more) from her first child, so I thought I'd make something FROM it instead.. and that's how far I got.

Help please?

OK-so I think it's been a long LONG time since I posted any thing, but it came up in a comment that I just made poker cards for my boyfriend (and another set for his brother) for Christmas and I thought I'd post them here for you. I'm using a new picture server so hopefully they won't be too blurry or other wise annoying :) Here they are:

http://www.geocities.com/my_red_red_lips/cards.jpg

and here's how I did it (taken directly from my comment on them, sorry if you already read it)...

First off, I just used normal copy paper trimmed down to the right size...I used two pieces per card...The page I used to draw the actual cards on and the piece for the picture on the back of each card. Then I took it to work (a copy place) and made color copies of them. That evened out the colors a little but in a good way and I could fit all the front and backs on 12 pages per deck, so that wasn't so bad. I cut them all out and glued them together with a glue stick (just about anything else would have made little globby sections you could see when they were all done). I trimmed them again to make sure they were all uniform (mostly because I'm anal about such things but also because these were poker cards and I know Gavin would use little things like that to cheat). When that was all done, I just laminated them all up with 5 mil heated laminate paper (I'm pretty sure it was 5 mil as opposed to 3 and I know it wasn't 10) Anyway, it took me a lot longer than I had planned, but I also was making 2 sets AND I still have my originals to go from so I could make new ones really easily now :) They've used them a lot already and I'm confident that they'll hold up well...Just make sure you don't trim the finished laminated cards too close to the seal or they will peal there and look crappy-especially after a ton of shuffeling...I was so proud of myself I threatened them with death if they lost the decks :)

Oh, and since I'm always curious about how much every ones crafts end up costing I'll break down my costs for you...(althouh I get a discount, so I'll give you "normal" costs on this one)

12 color copies at $0.99 each= about $12.00
12 laminated sheets at $1.19 each= about $14.28

about $26.28 + tax for each deck...

Oh, and there's a bunch of ways to make the boxes to hold them too...I made custome boxes out of left over card board (also from work) drew all over them and they "laminated" them with packing tape...but they would have also fit perfectly in those plastic cases you buy push pins in-and those would have been super easy to decorate as well. I may do that next time...
[identity profile] sarahjewel.livejournal.com
ok, I wanted to get into decoupage... and I have a few cardboard shoeboxes to use as starters (seeing as I've never decoupaged) but I wasn't sure if cardboard works well, since it's absorbent? Or should I just go buy a few cheap-o wooden boxes at Michael's (or other crafty place)?

Also, is Mod Podge the best stuff to get for a starter? I figure I'll be able to get some info from the craft store people, but you all know what you're doing, and I've actually seen some of your stuff (rather than relying on some random employee who might or might not have actually used the stuff).

So, any help is MUCH appreciated! I'll definately take a few pictures of whatever I create, to show fof my first projects :)

thanks!!

red_red_lips reminded me to post about the deck of Tarot cards that I'm in the process of making. It's very cheap, but very time consuming -- but I think that this makes your cards all the more effective, since they have so much more of you in them.

Just buy a pack of blank-on-both-sides 4x6 index cards (no lines!) and draw a deck design on one side and the arcana on the other. This takes a helluva long time if you're going to draw one design on the back of each of the seventy-eight cards, and then draw the Major and Minor Arcana on the front, and then maybe color them with markers or c. pencils or laminate them with packing tape .... personally, I'd leave them naked, with no tape; they feel so much more responsive in your hands.

I suppose this could be done by wily graphic design grrls if their printers are amenable. If so, let me know -- I want to see your handiwork!!!

My boyfriend's little brother has to dress up as a hippie and he needs a tie dye shirt by Tuesday.
My question is..would you be able to use food coloring or koolaid to do it?
I doubt that he will wear it ever again but just as long as he has it for the one day.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance. ♥

I cut up my ugly slipknot shirt to make a little purse but I still need to sew on some straps and I should probably sew down the 'needle'. I also made two more stuffed kittyish things to go along with the one I made last night:
