So this guy in my dorm is putting on a play and needed a costume designer, and he turned to me and my roommate :D

We're in charge of making a costume that looks like...this or this (the best pictures I could find, unfortunately). So today I went to Michael's and got all sorts of stuff and I'm all excited to get started.

I got a mask form and some wire mesh stuff (to make the jaw), some feathers and leather cord (for the "headdress" you see in the first picture, although the feathers aren't actually visible in that picture), and a pair of Hulk Hands that we're going to paint yellow.

So I have a couple questions. First of all, is the paint going to look awful on the Hulk hands? They're made of soft, squishy plastic but I bought some primer/sealer stuff that claims it will seep into the porous surface and make the paint stick better. I'm assuming that will keep the paint from cracking too early (they only have to last for two or three shows, after all) and looking like crud but am I wrong? The Michael's lady was incredibly unhelpful when I asked. :\\

Second, I haven't even bought the material for the outfit yet because the director has yet to measure the guy who's playing this character or even give me the actor's contact information. But when I do have measurements, WHERE THE HELL AM I GOING TO FIND PURPLE SPANDEX??? Or any purple stretchy material, for that matter. The director wants the outfit to be pretty form-fitting, but then he wants us to make an undergarment of "muscles" to make the actor look beefier. How can we do this? We were going to put the actor in a long-sleeved cotton shirt and long pants with "muscle pockets" (pockets stuffed with polyfill) sewn on the outside, but would that look absolutely horrible? Has anyone even had experience with doing anything like this before? Somehow I doubt it. :P

Lastly, how are we going to keep this poor actor from sweating to death after he's wearing a mask, a layer of poly-fill which is basically insulation, SPANDEX, and plastic Hulk hands? I think if our costume kills the lead actor the director won't be too happy with us.

Does anyone have ANY suggestions for anything related to this? I'd appreciate any advice you have.

On another note so this isn't just a "begging for help" post, I made a billfold out of "laminated" newspaper yesterday and it came out effing great. I will post pictures soon but I just wanted to share that :)

i have a ton of those "white board" things, and i want to do something with them. they were free, have have ads around the boarders... but i was thinking of painting over that and personalize them to give you... see where i'm going here. i know paint sux on that kind of thing... (though i hear there's this new spray paint for plastics) any ideas as to how to cover it up? it's flemsey (sp?), not thick at all.

i was thinking... last resort... collage. :)

thanx :)

so, i have seen some of you actually affix a clothes tag or bag tag to your stuff and I am wondering....if I had a specific name I wanted to use for my "company", how would I go about making tags for my stuff??

What about creations that utilize other people's art (like Sublime Stitching)...how would I go about stating such on the tag so that I don't get in trouble for selling stuff?

oh no! even more more crafty pursuits to further feed my grower fiber addiction monster!

i've been buying and looking at a lot of handspun yarn lately and so of course i thought, "hey! i wanna try this!" and one night in a fit of boredom, i made a cd spindle. )

i had a little bit of leftover fiber from a felting experiment and so after hastily skimming some instructions i set about to spin it. )

since i rushed through the instructions, i ended up spinning it "the wrong way" from the way i wanted to, but it was definitely fun. i was hooked and the next time i stopped in at my local yarn shop, i scooped up some more fiber from the back. )

i didn't even really pay attention to what i got, but all i know is the bright colours always pull me in and i haven't even tried making something with this stuff yet, but i've got ideas. next step is to try plying.

i have to projects coming up this week that i though some wonderfully creative minds like yours could shed some insight into...

PROJECT A) to design a vanity plate of a powerful female character in literature.

---I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on what i could use to make a realistic vanity plate, or even just a nice display

PROJECT B) is to design a female dream team of 8 powerful woman and why you choose them.

---as of right now this is just going on a posterboad, but i am looking for ideas to spice up the posterboard or even an alternative to a posterboard

THANKS IN ADVANCE!

finally, after a few months lurking, my first post! a little introduction: my name's laura, i'm just about 18, and i've been an incredibly crafty person since the day i was born. my current favorites are knitting, designing and sewing my own clothes, and turning old yardsale items into new, usable things for my room. but i dabble in everything-- chances are, if i haven't tried it, i'm planning to.

onto the post: after a couple years, i want to go back to scrapbooking. since i'm graduating soon, i really want to get my scrapbook, which has always been wanting for more attention, really together, culling all the extra stuff so i'll have something nie to take with me to school. so basically, I'm starting over. This time, I want to be very careful to keep a constant "theme" throughout the book. Since I love old/vintage things, I thought that it would be fun to keep each page to a decade theme-- aka mod, retro, roaring 20's, a sock-hop theme, etc. My questions:
1) any good layout tutorials online that might be helpful?
2) what brands of scrapbooking materials might have stamps/die cuts/papers that would work well?

I've been lurking around a while but am finally ready to introduce. My name is Becky and I'm an almost (but not quite) 30 year old mother of a two year old. All of the sudden everyone I know is having a baby. I have some great ideas for some baby T-shirts but I need your help. If my idea turns out ok I'll share it with everyone. If not I'll destroy the evidence in shame.

Does anyone know where I can get a good gif of a heart tattoo? You know, the one with the bulging heart, the dagger, and the banner that says "Mom"? Like the old bikers sport on their biceps? I really can't draw so a photograph of someone's arm doesn't really help me.

Someone please help me!!!!

For my friend's birthday, I'm taking a breakfast tray and putting a mosaic on the bottom. I'm wondering where would be the best place to get the tiles and grout the cheapest.

I've looked at Home Depot. I've seen craft tiles, but they looked a bit expensive. I'm wondering if I should check out a tile/carpet place, but I don't want to buy a whole case of tiles, just a few in different colors. Do you have an advice?

It's been a long time since I posted on here ;) So I decided to do a long overdo entry!

Soo here are but a few pieces I've done lately:

Enameled Pieces )
I torch-fired these instead of kiln-firing. Every one and their brother was in the kiln room hogging our one lil kiln. And I knew glass if heated enough would melt just as well with a torch - I mean, c'mon, the lampworkers in the glass shop uses a smaller torch tip than I did when trying to melt bars of glass! They may not look like much, but the steps were LONG and tedious! The metals had to be cleaned to the point water just sheeted off of them instead of beading them. Then you have to set a counter enamel on the back, so the glass and metal wouldnt expand so much. Then, pickle it clean (pickle is the term for the cleaning solution). Then you gota put the enamel powder on in THIN layers, wait till it cools, pickle it again maybe, add another layer, add another layer...AHHHH
It took me over three hours to do those lil things. Lucky it didn't feel like three hours.

I then made a ring outa a pieces of silver I had left ovah, and umm...its huge. I mean, seriously. I think its around a size 11 or 12.
It's silver, hrm, kinda...well, rustic, almost as if it were pewter. But its not! It's silver! Haha, I may buff it up and sell it. I don't know yet...

Pictures of the Ring - they aren't very good pics. )

Plus a couple more things I have done in the past two days )

Nu Tins

Hello all. I don't believe I've ever posted here, though I lurk and comment from time to time. I've got a few pictures to show you of my current obsession. Mint tins covered in Sculpey clay. I've started collecting all kinds of mint and candy tins of all shapes and sizes to cover with clay. They work great as trinket boxes for jewelry or tiny gifts, or I plan to decorate the insides of some of my tins to make pocket shrines.
This one was my first. It's not an Altoid tin, but a very small obscure mint tin, about 1/3 the size of an Altoid tin.

Hello,

I'm trying to see if I can get away with painting on glass without buying "glass paint", and realizing the difference in the two kinds of paints. Acrylics go on fine, but they rub right off with a wet thumb. What if I were to coat the artwork with something? Can anyone recommend a good sealant that would be safe for use on something that will get hot (votive holders)?

TIA!!!

Edit: I haven't been able to find the glass paint medium by Jo Sonia that was mentioned in the FAQ...

Hi girls,

I want to start painting...like, on canvas. I feel so silly just wanting to start this and I don't know a thing about it. Does anyone here paint? Can anyone recommend where to get cheap canvases? What type of paints should I try? I'm at a loss as to how to get started, but it seems therapeutic.

Thank you :o)
