My father bought this really pretty lamp for me but unfortunately it came with a boring white lampshade. I decided it needed some jazzing up. I tea stained it, giving it more of an off white color. I found some great wallpaper samples that had antique looking keys on it, sliced them out with an exacto knife, and decoupaged them on. This is the end result.

Alright, some questions.

Can you decoupage/mod podge type thing on wood?
When making books, everytime I make one, when I open it up, the paper on the oustide, on the cover, always wrinkles.. what am i doing wrong? What do you guys use as glue? I have very meager supplies, which will hopefully change on Thrusday.
My friends got engaged on Friday. She has been my friend for about 6 years now, we are very close. Do I have to get them an engagement gift? Not saying, do I HAVE to, but, do people do that?

On a side note, I'm so lost on what to be for Halloween. We will be going to the club probably, and I want to be something fun, cool, maybe even a little sexy, but I don't feel like I can accomplish the whole sexy thing. I have been looking at all of your Halloween costumes, and you guys have some great ideas!
I'm lost this Halloween.

Hello. I have been watching this community for a long time and finally decided to join, because I need help.

I've decided to make a "pocket shrine" as a gift to my boyfriend, who will be turning 18. I'm going to be using an Altoid's tin. My problem is.. How can I decorate the outside? I've heard that you can't use regular paint as the metal won't take it, but you can use nail polish? Is this true? Also, I've been contemplating using fabric to decorate the outside (maybe inside too), but I have no idea how to go about attaching it to the metal. If I decide not to decorate the inside with fabric (if it's even possible), then should I just use tape to collage the inside? Or if glue, what type? And on a more personal level.. Anyone have any ideas on what kinda things I could put in the shrine? :) Such as.. trinkets of some sort, poems, but any particular ideas, being that he's my boyfriend and he's turning 18.. and I love him very much, I'm looking for specifics.

Thanks in advance! ^_^

I was reading a mothering.com forum just now and came across this:

http://www.bevscountrycottage.com/

The free patterns are on the left hand side of the page. Earlier someone posted about the hats for charity she is making, some of these patterns are for charity type stuff.

Hi everyone. I'm planning on doing this armwarmer pattern here, but it's done with a size G/4 mm hook. I'm going to see if I can get the same size hook but just in case if I can't I was going to try and do the pattern with a 4.5mm hook. What I'm asking is will it come out the same way if I do the pattern with the 4.5mm hook instead of the 4mm?

Dear all crafty grrls and gyz:

I bought the 'dans la lune' pendant that Switchgear made, and y'all need to know that it is some of the nicest, most joyful jewelry I have ever seen!!!!! It's just gorgeous!! I bought it to send to my best friend for her birthday ... and I will ... but damn, I'm going to miss it myself!

Well, I'll have to buy some more from Switchgear. Clearly. I suggest y'all seriously consider it too. She's an outstanding artist!!!!!

So, my 6 year old nephew asked for a chess set (and lessons) for Christmas this year. Yes, he's brilliant. We love him.

Anyway, I want to make him a chess set, because I'm making all my gifts this year.

I thought about buying wooden "people" pieces and painting them to look like chess pieces, but I can't find any horses for the knights. So, now I'm thinking about either carving the horses myself (time consuming and potentially dangerous as I haven't done any wood-carving in about 15 years), or re-doing the whole idea and making all the pieces out of sculpey (which would be time-consuming, but maybe worth the trouble as there would be far less blood loss involved).

Another option is to buy a set of pieces and just make the board.

Requirements:
Durable material-- he's 6 and lives in a family with 3 other children. I expect multiple pieces to end up underfoot, chewed on, thrown, etc.
I can make them in different colors, either by painting or using different colored materials.
Fast, easy to make. I don't have 100 hours between now and Christmas to make the pieces, so the less time-consuming, the better.
Magentizable-- I'm going to paint the board over either a piece of sheet metal or magnetic paint and use magnets on the bases of the pieces, so it will be easier to have them stick to the board and not shift around.

Help? Anyone have any suggestions? My main hang-up right now is the knights-- I could make do with the people pieces I bought, if I had some way of getting four wooden horse heads.

Feel free to take this down if it is inappropriate.

I just set up a new community to trade extra jewelry supplies.  My friends and I were lamenting that we have all of these extra beads......like when you buy a strand of 25 for a project, but you only use 22.  At this point, I have oodles of leftovers that I have not touched and will probably never use.  This community is a place to trade beads you don't want for some you might actually use.  It is a trading-only community.

Hi! My name is Alicia, I'm new to the community. I'm starting a craft club at my high school, and you are all so crafty, I was wondering if you all could give me ideas as to what to do craft-wise with a larger group of high school students. Thatnk you all in advance! I promise I'll post pictures of my crafts when i get around to actually finishing projects I start!

I just received something in the mail that is such a good idea..I don't know why I haven't thought of it myself.

We smoke American Spirit tobacco and they always send promotions and such. Today came a birthday card (my boyfriend's), the card says "Flowers for your Birthday". The paper is actually embedded with flower seeds!! You plant the card a 1/4 in some soil and water.

So cooool!

about a week ago i bought a ring from target that i absolutely love. the second day i wore it it turned my finger green. i really don't want to return it and i'd prefer not to coat it in clear nail polish because of how easily it chips off with wear. is there anything else i can coat it with that will prevent it from turning my finger icky colors, preferably something that won't chip off easily? any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Hi everyone! Last entry, I posted a bunch of necklaces I'd made. Now for some earrings!

I have a question about jewelry making particulary making earrings. I'm super new at all this craft stuff and I've only made on mod podge picture frame (which did turn out cute I might add :) but I'm really interested to get my hands into making jewelry.

Here's my problem....
I bought a straight nose plier and this other thing called a '3 in 1' jewelry maker's tool which cuts, curls, and bends. Will these be sufficient to make jewelry?
I bought also 2 packages of beads, some green and some pink, and also this really small starter kit that makes 3 earrings but has lots of straight pins and connecters (those circle thingys.)

Does anyone know of a good place to buy beads or where do you get your beads from? (p.s. I'm saving my money for a vehicle so I'm really tight on cash but can buy cheap stuff)

What about straight pins? Is this something Micheals or Hobby Lobby might sell?

Does anyone have any good info. or websites about how to make jewelry, things needed, and tutorials? Anything and everything helps. I've seen how great of things ya'll have made and I would like to make some too. (plus it will be cheaper by making a lot of earrings instead of paying $5-10 a pair at a store)

Thank you so much craftgrrls!

I bought some wool-ease yarn and new circular needles today with the intention of knitting a scarf in the round. If I just do a knit stitch throughout, will I have to worry about it curling or should the weight of it eliminate any issue with that?

(I've already checked the memories)

What can i do with old guitar strings just laying around?
[identity profile] qanat.livejournal.com
You guys remember that Snaffle competition that Snapple was having? Well, I have tons of caps left over from that and I was wondering what ideas you had for making something out of them. I think it would be really cute to make a belt but I have no idea how I would go about that. Thank you for your suggestions.
