If anyone remembers that far back, I posted earlier this year about hats and animals I'm making for donations to my local hospital's children's ward. I finished a Donation Hat during my lunch at work on thursday and have since started and finished another one this evening. I'm hoping to complete at least 10 more hats (if I have enough yarn) before christmas. Though, it should be more than that if I can keep up a 2-hat-per-week pace.

I used this post-stitch pattern, as posted earlier, as the basis, but didn't like the effect that rows 16-20 were supposed to make with the fp and dc stitches alternating. Maybe it's because I used an "I" hook rather than the recommended "G", so the spacing of my stitches was much larger than called. But, that's one of the alterations I made (the other was that I skipped from row 10 to row 14 as the hat was already long enough for my head, and it's supposed to be for a kid!). Besides, I don't have a "G" hook and I couldn't find either of the two "H"'s that I have (though, honestly, I didn't look past my crochet-hook holder).

I used a denim colored acrylic to start the hat off and alternated it with Lily's Sugar'n'Cream line in the "faded denim ombre" yarn, every 2 rows. It worked up quite nicely, with only 7 or so weave-in ends to fiddle with, and took about 2 1/2 hours from start to finish. I do believe it'll take considerably less time since I won't be figuring out how I should alter the pattern to suit my needs everytime I sit down to work another.

If anyone was curious, I'm still accepting donations of whatever you have for these hats and animals I'm making. I think I'll take a break from the hats tomorrow and work up some squares for animals. I've got loads of polyfill that needs to be used and stuffed animals are the best way to use it up. It's just keeping a healthy supply of yarn around that's a pain in the butt. :)

And for those curious as to how the hat came out: denim colored hat )

Yaaay...what do you know...I actually sewed something! I made this for someone, so hopefully she'll like it...if not...I'll sell it or keep it haha. It took me a while to finish...I started on it probably a month or so ago...but gave up because the red fabric (it was stretchy) gave me difficulties, plus the design I was thinking of wasn't really working out. I finally picked it back up again last night and just started sewing and ended up with this. I had no plan in particular...I just grabbed fabric, cut, pleated, sewed, and safety pinned. Tadah! Probably took me about 2 hours. The waistband is made out of the stretchy fabric (so YAY it stretches! ^^), the whole skirt is pleated going in different directions in different areas, front panel is made out of the red material, the rest is made out of the black, safety-pinned where both fabrics meet, there is a slight V at the back, 2 belt loops in front, X belt loop in center back. Fabric is uneven on purpose aaand frayed edges. What do you think?

I might make myself a Halloween costume. Not sure yet, as I will probably be at home with the boyfriend watching movies and eating pizza & passing out candy to kids (although last year, we did something similar and maybe only four people showed up at the door ;_;).

Anyway, I have some ideas in mind, but I'm still a beginner at sewing. I was wondering if any of you girls know of a pattern similar to this dress I sketched out (behind the lj-cut). All I'd need, I think would be a pattern of the basic shape, and then I could alter it to add stripes of a different color. Also, I was wondering how many yards of fabric I would need (I'm 5'0" and wear sizes 1-3 in the juniors miss departments). One other question -- if I have clothing of similar shape (ie: tops and skirts), could I just use those to substitute for a sewing pattern instead, and just kind of wing it? I've made a top like that before by using another shirt to make a pattern out of magazine pages, lol. It turned out alright.

Thanks in advance. :)

Hi, I searched the FAQ's with no success.
I am looking to sew several items (apron, skirt, bib) in large quantity. I realize the importance of a pattern.
Dilema: I am, for the most part, at a loss as to how I should go about creating one.

Help please.

this is my favorite necklace...i wear it all the time, and now the wire it's on has become a little gross and rusty from sweat/body oil/etc, as you can see in the picture [the wire should be shiney silver...not dull brown. ;P]. i wanna put it on a new wire, but i don't know what kind of "wire" to look for or where to start looking for it [online or in a store]...is it just called memory wire? i've heard that term in here before. i know there are lots of talent jewelry makers in this community, so i thought some of you might be able to help!...

thank you, ladies...once again, you're the greatest!! :)

I have this super large kitchen window... which would be great if i didn't have creepy neighbors who feel the need to look into it all the time. we have stupid verticle blinds which are alright i guess but i was looking to do some DIY window frosting by using mod podge or something and some tissue paper. i remember Not Martha doing something like this before and she had a tutorial on her site and everything but it's long gone. All of the tutorials online say to use epsom salts... i was wondering if anybody had any suggestions or ideas or even links to point me in the right direction to frosting my window. the plan is to frost the bottom half and hang curtains above the frosting and display all of the bottles we have collected along the sil in front of the frosting. I'm so set on doing this project and will post photos when it is completed.

if this post is seen as inappropriate in any way please delete.... oh and I did search the memories and FAQ's before posting. xo

Thoughts/Suggestions/Questions are appreciated! I love getting feedback about the things I make. As well, I have two questions:

Does anyone know of any good bead stores in the Toronto area?

And does anyone know a good place to get a dummy/display thingy for displaying jewelry?

Thansk!!

I'm looking for a thick paper-thicker than cardstock or posterboard, but not as thick as foamboard. My mom saw it used on some craft show to make ornaments-you punch a shape out of one color, and attach it to a circle of another color for a 3-d effect. She missed what kind of paper it was, though, and I haven't been able to find anything suitable. I get the idea the paper might have been slightly textured, but I'm not sure.

Anybody have any ideas?

I went to Jo-Annes fabric today and looked through some pattern books and found some neat apron patterns made from quilting quarters.
I changed it up a bit and used colorful handkerchiefs instead. I have my three pieces sewn together now and in a minute I'm going to trim and add my ties.

ingrediants: cheap acrylic yarn, h hook, single and half double crochets, ferocious bear impression.

the pattern was quickly mauled and devoured ---- ok so i just sorta freestyled it. but doesnt the devouring sound much more dramatic?

i just found out my friend is pregnant (the unexpected/not planned for kind) and I'm going to be moving soon so I won't be here for any of the pregnancy.

I was wondering if anybody has any ideas for something(s) I could make her and leave with her or things that I could send throughout the next 9 months.

there's the obvious quilt, but I want more than that.
She is my best and oldest friend (we've known each other for almost 20 years).

I appreciate any suggestions!

oh..and I leave in a month...so that's the time period I've got to work with for anything that I would be leaving with her.

Well, a long long long time ago I saw a lady make a modification to her shoes. I think it was that she bought pumps that were too big so she cut the back open, and somehow laced up the back with ribbon to make it fit tighter. I was wondering if that lady is still around here or if anyone else has done this? Does it work and are there specific steps that must be followed? My pumps are a little big, but at $12 half a size is quite ok. I wouldn't mind tripping once, but tying ribbon into the back would be helpful and cute.

I haven't been here in a while, and my has the memory section grown! Lovely.

i am gonna make myself an angel costume for halloween [not terribly creative, i know...but my costume has to be "work appropriate"], and i found this great tutorial for making wings out of wire coat hangers...i just thought some of you might like the link for your costumes also...it'll work for angels, faeries, butterflies, bumblebees, etc. :)

I'm sure that there will be a lot of Halloween-themed threads on here the closer we get to the day. So here I am, chipping in:

I work in an office, and a lot of us have little trinkets, stuffed animals, etc. on our desks to personalize them. My personal stuffed thingy is a 'beanie' lobster that some friends got me on a bad day. We've had lots of fun dressing him up for various holidays, but this will be his first Halloween. I want to make him a costume (since we'll most likely be deocrating the office, he'll fit right in), but I need some crazy-awesome ideas. So far, all we've come up with is a pirate, or a pimp...we need help. Here's a pic of Smoothie, if that'll help get the brain-juices flowing:

Thanks in advance for any and all suggestions. And just so I'm giving [and not just receiving]:

(oh, the wee little ghostie)

has anybody ever ripped apart their sewing machine and/or bobbin area?

okay, so posting pictures and asking a question doesn't really work, so here's the question in all its bareness.

my sewing machine broke.

i had four REALLY AWESOME bags in the making and it konked out. first the dial that you adjust the stitch length started moving and making a noise when i sewed, and every once in a while the stitching would jam up - there'd be a whole bunch of top thread all tangled underneath the fabric and in the bobbin area. i oiled it, then took it apart and there were really stain-y black flecks all over the bottom - like dried grease - can i buy grease for a greasy area between what looks like a fan and copper wire? i couldn't figure out what was wrong with. so now it's back together and all the top thread gets all jammed in the bobbin area. it seems to get stuck in there...help!!!! and NOW, the top thread doesn't even pick up the bobbin thread any more. can i fix this by myself?

Edit: I just took apart the bobbin area because it just wasn't working, so how much worse could i do. i'm thinking there's a proper way to put the bobbin holder area back IN, does this have to do with messing up the timing?

this is not incredibly crafty, delete if necessary.

my friend and I send letters to each other and its gotten into a competition as to who can send it in the most original way. Her last letter came in a huge cardboard box. Anyway I'm trying to do something really unbeatable. Any ideas?

Hi girls (and crafty guys, too :)!

I am going to be Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz for Halloweeen!

I want to buy a pair of red flats & add the sparkles myself, but I am not sure how I would get them this sparkly.

I thought of using sparkly spray paint, but it wouldn't give the same look :(

Any suggestions as to how I would obtain this look would be greatly appreciated! Thanks :)

I know people ask this all the time but Ya gotta, ya know?

Ok so I found this sewing machine...
http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product.aspx?prodid=10032099&whse=&topnav=&cat=

would that be OK for me as a beginner? my mom wanted to try and find one at Costco cuz it would cost less and stuff. (my dads the manager of the one where we live) I have a friend whos parents own a dry cleaning/alteration shop and so she knows a lot about sewing machines and ima ask her about it too.

I was gonna post a craft I did on here but I'm tired and dont feel like uploading the pics to photobucket, so, sorry for the text only
