So this weekend I went to an auction with my family. I ended up scoring a 1958 Singer sewing machine, desk style for (get this) only 2 bucks!!! Went home and tried it out and it worked perfectly like new! It even has the original Singer instruction booklet and all the little do-dabs that came in the 'singer' box. I'm majorly excited about this. $2 and it bought me a world of joy! :)

Anyways, so my question is...
I will be a SUPER UBER new person to sewing. I believe all I could possibly make right now with my level of expertise, my time I have, and the amount of patience I have is pj bottoms, simple skirts, pillows, and some clothes for Mona (my dog).

I was wondering if any of ya'll knew of some fabulous beginning sewing websites. Or perhaps any tutorials? The more pictures and information the better. Any thing that can help me begin sewing and giving me step by step instructions would be awesome. (btw I'm looking for websites not books. i really don't want to have to shell out cash that i don't have.)

Thanks! :)

Hi Crafty women!

I've been a member of this community for a while, but I don't post, mostly because I sell my crafts (mostly medievla and renaissance clothing, but some jewelry), and all the pics have prices on them, and I don't want anyone to think I am trying to peddle my goodies.

Anyway, I'm just posting today b/c I'm going to be making a trip to a local, San Diego, sort of underground fabric mecca, and I'd love to meet up with other crafty diva's and share my source.

It's the national City swapmeet!

Harbor Drive In 3033 National City Blvd. National City, CA

It's mostly fabric, but some notions (lots of buttons), and trim. LOTS of good trim.

I'll be there Saturday at 10am at the southernmost gate. I'm the fat redheaded girl with the pigtail, probably in jeans. If anyone wants to meet up and hunt for fabric, email me at akeen02037@yahoo.com.

I made this hat ) for my roommate. I realized its hard to take a picture of yourself in a hat without either looking scary or sleepy.
Its based on this pattern Bow hat I change the yarn to a kind of manos del uruguay yarn, not manos, but similar, so i had to do a whole bunch of adjustments to # of stitches since the gauge was totally different and i change the brim to a seed stitch.

I also started the broadstreet mittens for my brother. they are pretty big on me, but I think they will only be a little bit big on him. I used lion brand magic stripes and it looks a little ridiculous, but oh well. I'm going to make my boyfriend try them on before I make the other one just to make sure they aren't ridiculously big. I just started the mitten shell. They are so fast to make, i started last tuesday and finished the glove part on Thursday or Friday. Here they are Broadstreet )

Okie... here goes.

A while back, one of you ladies posted about removing the ink/labelling on a pom wonderful bottle. But I can't remember what you used, so could you let me in on that? Was it nail polish remover, turpentine? Dunno. I've got a plan to paint a snow-man face on this, fill it with foot soak/bath salts, and work up a little top hat for over the neck. *grin*

Second question. Those 'cold heat' soldering irons. I want one. But I have the sinking feeling that it's going to turn out to be the geek equivilant of those mini sewing machines. (IE, crap.) Of course, it's only $20, so there might not be much to lose. If you folk have tried it, give me some details.

Thanks bunches everyone,
~bubbles

I attempted to make a lit rag wreath after seeing pictures of them on the internet.  They're more of a country style, but I like country style, so it works out.

Some brooches (or broaches?) I made from some off cuts of my textiles. I sewed the textile squares onto brass wire mess, beaded them and then sewed a brooch clasp onto the back.

Little doggie bead:

Its for my boyfriend. The little bead-hole goes through the ears.
pictures before I painted it )

Too bad its all sticky and covered in dirt now.. since the spray sealent reacted with the acrylic paint badly. I need to find something to strip it with, and repaint it.
Its 1/2 inch long.

Aaaaalso.. I made this for him:

(I didn't make the little green jar its holding, just the blue Malamute dolly. ;3)

More images, including before the paint, and of the little pants I made it. )

The whole figure is 6 and 1/4 inches tall. He loves doggies (especially Malamutes), and he loves the color blue. So I made him a blue Malamute doll/sculpture out of polymer clay (Super Sculpey) after his character, named Malameux.

If you're [livejournal.com profile] aquagirl, don't click below! This is a present for you!
If not, here's tonight's tiny foray into shrinkydinks, as inspired by this post by [livejournal.com profile] meanjunglist...my sister is in a burlesque troupe, so I wanted to make her something that'll remind her of her stage persona, Lola Goetz (points if you get the reference!).
