Hey!!
If you have any extra $$$ laying around...or are looking for a present for that crocheter/knitter...I just ordered some books on http://www.barnesandnoble.com/.
Hip To Crochet is $11.97
Hip To Knit is $17.05
Stitch and Bitch is $9.76
Stitch and Bitch Nation is $9.57
And it has free shipping for orders over $25.

I am not trying to sell anything...trust me...I am just too cheap to pay full price for the books...and with free shipping..it is better then me taking my coupon to the store every week to get one...lol
I am buying Hip To Crochet and Stitch and Bitch.

I totally scored a present for me *squeels* and presents for my brother and best friend. Obviously...I got the best deal..heh heh

Now I am excited and cannot wait to get them.

So, I've gotten a contract from a store in Seattle that wants to carry my kitty/bunny/puppy ear hats, paws, and headbands, but I've been asked to provide some kind of display for my merchandise.
I know some of you sell your hat stuff - what do you use for displays?
I've also been asked to use some kind of inventory code system, but I've never done anything like it before, so I'm lost as to where to start with that.

The crafty bug bit me once again, and I've gone crazy making goodies. Most specifically glass ornaments. I painted and decorated a number of paperstock boxes as well. And random bits of jewelry goodness. So now I share in some early Christmas cheer.

Huzzah for sparklie spirals!

The inside, and more... )

I have a lot of fun making this stuff. I'd really love to start working with stained glass and mosaics, but have no idea where to start, nor do I really have the money to afford starter supplies. Tis the life of a college student.

Anyone interested in seeing more can peek at my website:

Does anyone happen to have any recommendations where I could get a nice variety of decor foil papers? Like the tissue paper you use for gifts, but in more flashy sparklie colors and patterns rather than flat paper colors. The more elaborate, the better. I get lucky sometimes and find good stuff at Wal-Mart or dollar stores like Dollar Tree. Otherwise it's Mervyn's or Halmark or other such stores, and their prices for one pack of pretty foil papers can be rather expensive!

Yesterday I wanted to try making a book journal, due to seeing all the cool people at craftster.org make them. At my school library they have a few old books for sale for ten cents, and I found a Betsy~Tacy book there. I loved the Betsy-Tacy books when I was little, and this one was the original cover, published in 1940.

Three of my woodburnings. Most of my art is pen and ink; those skills seem to transfer over well to woodburning at a beginner's level. I hope the link works, as I'm not really sure how to make photobucket work...

Yeah, these are more than a year old. No scanner, no digital camera on hand to post anything new. But I wanted to share something with the group.
Edit: For when the page has exceeded its limit:
Just burned rearing horse, same horse colored, and Table for two.

I have a black messenger bag that I'd like to "recycle". Its black on the outside (which I like) and a light blue on the inside (which I don't like). I'd like to paint the inside lining to make it a dark green.

Can I use regular fabric paint? Or should I look for a specific type of paint? And will it come off the pockets if I decide to put things in it? (like credit card pockets, pencil pockets, ect.)

I made this anklet for a friend and while I am pleased about how it looks, I am really pleased about how this picture of it came out.

I have a question for you lovely people living in the San Francisco area. I am looking into attending Apparel Arts School (http://www.apparel-arts.com), and I was wondering if any of you happen to know much about it. This is the exact type of school that I want to be going to at this point in my life, and although I've never been to San Fran, I'm willing to take a huge leap, if I feel like it'll be worth it.

Also- do any of you lovely people know of any other similar schools in other places? The only two I have found are in San Fran and in Portland (OR), and I cannot stand Portland. Thanks ahead of time!

My friend just started knitting and she wants to make me a scarf. I told her I'd buy the yarn that I liked and she could knit with it. So I went to a few nice yarn shops and I am getting discouraged! I am allergic to wool and it seems like all the really lovely yarn is wool or a wool blend. Even the blends that are like 25% wool and the rest acrylic are too itchy for me...what I want is one of those chunky/homey yarns, maybe one that has a hand dyed look to it. I want it in red. All the acrylics I am finding are like, really thin and lame looking. I don't want anything like a "novelty" yarn, or chenille either...these are some yarns that I like, but they are all wool...

pretty yarn

Is there such a thing as really nice quality synthetic yarn?

hmmmm.

is there a way i can bind a book similar to coptic but with single sheets of paper, rather than folded signatures?

i got a little ahead of myself and made covers already and the paper i bought is the size i want the book to be. i don't want to do a stab binding since i've already made the covers, and the book wouldn't open up the way i want it to.

i'd like to stitch the covers to the pages of the book itself.

if it helps any, here is a photo of the pages and covers. they measure roughly 7.5" x 5.5".

strike that pose!

i wish i could keep this. seriously, i've been going back and forth on it, but i made it for my friend's birthday so i must give it to her. she will shit her britches for sure! all my gratitude to [livejournal.com profile] knitmygrits for her fantastic Space Invaders pattern/chart! although i just used the charts and winged the rest. i also used size 7 needles, an extra color, and attached thick fleece as backing with a blanket stitch instead.

ok ok question 1:

I'm making a scarve for someone for xmas and right now i'm practicing the pattern on acrylic yarn but I dont know how comfortable it would be so I was wondering what would be a nice soft yarn to use? not something like chenile (sp?) just something nice and not itchy.

question #2:

I'm Jewish. I was talking to my friend about hannukah and he's all "I WANT HANNUKAH CUZ I WANT PRESENTS" yeah you know how people are, all jealous of us and our 8 NIGHTS bwaha. Anyhoo...so I'm giving him hannukah. But each night our presents will have a theme. One of the themes is things that start with "Q" and I'm having trouble thinking of what to get/make for him! No, no not a quilt (I know you crazy crafter too well...mwaha.) cuz Im not experienced in the quilting area and I want something iono...that he'd like/use/be like "omg thats hilarious/the greatest idea ever".

Is anyone familiar with any online webstores that sell things on consignment (other than cutxpaste.com)?

Howdy.

I'm an Activities Director at an assisted living place, and once a week we have crafts. I just started a few weeks ago so I've only done two crafts, and I have plenty of other ideas, but I thought I'd get some input to store for when I'm not feeling particularly crafty. Here are the guidelines:

They should be relatively cheap (I have a bit of a budget, but it's not huge)
They should be relatively easy (my residents have a hard time with anything that takes lots of fine motor skills, and have a hard time seeing stuff too, so lots of sewing is out)

Last week we ironed crayons in wax paper to make stained glass, and this week we made soap. So far that's all I've done. :)

Thanks for the input!

It has been proven that you can use bleach or Liquid dish washing detergent to bleach out clothing and colored papers. I saw this on the Carol Duvall Show today. I thought I would pass it on to those that like to experiment with different mediums and medias.

Here are photos I've been meaning to post of a book I finished recently. Stab bound, made out of postal office boxes & labels, some red string I bought at the fabric store a while back, and some red sewing thread. The paper is stationary with a stamp print that my Dad bought me years ago when I was maybe seven. I'm going to be nineteen in a couple of days. O_o I haven't named the book yet, any suggestions? :)

Sorry if the photos are off color. I didn't want to adjust them in PS and I have no idea if they are correct because my monitor isn't callibrated correctly and I can't get anything to look right. -_-;;

we drew secret santa names at work today, and i drew someone i don't know very well since she's pretty new, but in talking with her today she mentioned how much she loves cooking and is trying to compile her recipes into a book. she said that when she gets a recipe from a magazine, she really likes to write the recipe down with the cut out picture of the finished yummy thing.

i totally want to make her a cool recipe book (cause i've fallen head over heels in love with coptic binding) but am having trouble trying to figure out the best way i could make the pages of the book be plastic sleeves that she could slip her recipes in and out of. advice??

(i promise once i've left the dark ages and gotten a dig camera i'll post pics of finished fun things!)

ah, metalsmithing :) I think this counts as crafty

my last project in metalsmithing was to make chasing tools and put a design into either brass or copper. (I picked brass because I thought the pirate design would look better) Making the tools took longer than the chasing because I wanted to put twists in the squared off tools to make them easier to turn. The skinny one has a nice counter twist :) I made 5 tools; straight liner, curved liner, little tooth detail punch, a pusher, and a planisher for smoothing (which I hardly used). The tools are made out of tool grade steel and oil hardened. They used to be much shinier before I used them, heheh. tools, yey )
I made 2 pieces, a goo monster (like a simplified Slimer) and a skull and crossbones pirate thing. I made the goo monster first and didn't round it out as much as the skull. The skull turned out much better, although it looks lumpy and not really skull-like. But I wanted something piratey to match the huge flag in my apartment =^_^= I want to dip it in liver of sulpher (which will turn the metal black) and sand the skull so it will stay brass colored and shiny. These aren't very big, maybe 3 inches square or so. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with them yet. metal goodies )

I made these by heating the metal (annealing) and putting it in a cast iron skillet full of pitch (the pitch gives enough for you to punch in the design while keeping the rest of the metal straight) and tap the tools into the metal in the shape I wanted to with a chasing hammer. The tools were put in a forge and hammered into shape (well, at least the pusher and both liners). The planisher and tooth shape were ground and sanded. I am a huge art dork, if this doesn't make sense I will try to explain better :P

Hello Again Everyone....

I'm planning on giving my teacher a gift and I'm not exactly sure what I should do... I was thinking of making her a tote bag (as I noticed that she uses a gift bag to hold her lunch, etc) but I'm afraid she may not like the fabric that I pick to make it...(do you think I should just go ahead and do it anyway?)

Do you guys have any ideas (it needs to be homemade/artsy fartsy) as to other things that would be good? I was thinking maybe a journal, but I'd like whatever it is to look mature...and I fear I may screw up a journal...

Thanks for the help

I've been feeling crafty lately, and wanted to make a post. I've been doing a lot of work on crocheting a blanket for my boyfriend; it's nowhere near finished, or I'd post pictures. I will when it's done, though.

I rasterized a picture of my sister's puppy, Harley, who I miss a lot. (I'm stuck six hours away from him at college.) I used the Rasterbator , and I really like how it turned out. My roommate likes it, and so do friends in the hall. It'll be nice to look at something other than a blank white wall while doing homework, too!

So click here and see the pics! )

Since I ran out of pages in my old sketchbook today, and found a new sketchbook for $8.... I decided plain black was a little bit /too/ plain... So I fixed it up a bit:
My new sketchbook My new sketchbook

This is my new sketchbook. It was formally one of those ugly plain black "pro art" hardbound blank-page books. sooo, I thought I'd give it a little something more. I sewed the raw fabric edge under on a machine, then I used Super77 spray adhesive to adhere it to the cover. Its done front and back in the snowleopard velvet.
Inside the sketchbook Inside the sketchbook

On the inside front and back covers, I took the first and last pages, and sprayed Super77 adhesive, then I took that page and covered the raw fabric edges. Voila, finished custom book cover.

This sketchbook now matches a briefcase and a cashbox that I lined with the same fabric a few months ago (I dont think I ever took pictures of them, though). The interior of the briefcase is all snowleopard print velvet, the exterior is very plain... And as for the cashbox, I added the snowleopard velvet to the top of the cashbox, to "disguise" it. And make it blend in with the interior of the briefcase, so I can go to conventions and keep my money locked and safe, and not so obvious with a "BRINKS HOME SECURITY" logo printed on the top. :P The sketchbook fits perfectly next to the box in my briefcase. Its all very snazzy now.

Hopefully my sketchbook pictures will inspire you guys to go out and customise your own. :3
