I am scrounging my pennies, but I am in love with soap-making. So, my big question is: is it ok to use chocolate candy molds for soaps?

I could definately make some cute soaps to suspend. :D

I know it is a bit out of season for butterflies, but, I couldn't help myself! I finally had some time on the weekend just past to sit down and make some new kanzashi pins from vintage kimono fabric.

And some posser pictures of me wearing them: )

I'm a very hands-on person, so I'm taking a one-on-one knitting class on Wednesday at 4.
I told the woman I wanted to make a simple hat on double pointed needles (just can't get the hang of them), so she told me to find a pattern and buy the yarn and needles.

Now, without spending too much money on yarn, I'd like to make this hat:
http://www.headhuggers.org/patterns/kpatt02.htm

But it seems the yarn runs pretty expensive for a practice project.

So I'm wondering if any of you know of a not so high-end yarn I can substitute that can be found at Michael's or Jo-Ann's or Hobby Lobby.

Thanks in advance! <3

Hey ladies. I have some christmas presents almost completed. There is one thing left and this is where I need y'all's help. I painted those ceramic piggy banks with acrylic paints. Good for when I screw up and need to scrap off the paint. Not so good when I want the damn paint to stay on. Is there a spray or something out there that I can coat the pigs to keep the paint from chipping off? Thanks guys.

PS. once I get this one last thing out of the way, I'll post pictures. PROMISE!

Hello!

It's my friend's birthday and she recently took up knitting. She has made a couple of scarfs and that's it. I thought I might like to get her the two Stitch & Bitch books for her birthday. Are these books suitable for a beginner? Or are they more advanced? I want to get her something she can use now, but that she'll be able to grow into as she progresses more....any opinions on these books would be great. I am sure there are tons of good knitting books, but not being a knitter myself, these are the only ones I have heard of and that seem "hip."

Thanks in advance!

OK...
So I've gone the custom slip cover method (storebought covers make me twitch), and I'd like to try another approach rather than make another one.

I have the most comfy couch, which has served me well, and I would like to dye/paint/etc it. It is of questionable fiber content. Has anyone done this with a reasonable abount of success? Maybe acrylic - is there an uber flexible brand/ choice application method? I don't want to turn it into a stiff as a board couch. (and I know Trading spaces' Hildi had a terrible time with spraypaint) I'm willing to take some risks, but I still kinda like it, and would mostly like to not have to replace it.

Thanks for your help on this! (the funkier the better)

How can I possibly make this look more like a bomb?

I think it needs some form of comicky type explosion around the detonation cording? What do you say?

So.

I have a bunch of those plastic faceted beads - left over from other projects - and I'd really like to do something nice with them for Christmas/Yule. I have this odd star shaped ornament I'm trying to replicate, but what about other things? I've seen safety pin angels - does anyone know where I might find directions for those? Other shapes or clever uses?

Help!

My aunt made this for everyone in the family and I thought I would share since I think it's a pretty cool gift and might help you out if you are having problems thinking of gifts. It's a cookie recipe book! She got a plain three ring binder and covered it in soft brown felt and glued the cookie and milk pictures on the front. Then she photocopied lots of cookie recipies and filled up the binder with them! She highlighted the recipes that she's tried out herself.

New here... I just wanted to share these pins I made yesterday. Wire birds' nests on wrapped wire branches, with freshwater pearls as eggs.

The weather is finally getting colder, and it seems like my hands are feeling frosty pretty much most of the time. I had some fleece left over from this project, and decided to do something about it.

That something would be fingerless gloves, so that I'm toasty-handed but still able to draw and dig for change and hold books and pinch people...you know, all of the important things. And I wanted them to be all loud and busy, so they ARE.

my fingers, they are so happy )

can anyone point me to a tutorial or something on how to make this? thanks!

I made the most awesome bracelets today. I made them from the guide in Bust seen here (and a few posts back): GO BEHIND THE CUT. And I apologize ahead of time for the crappiness of my digital camera. I think they're waaaay cuter in person.

I am a candle-making newbie!

In the past I've recycled wax from old candles to make new candles, using 100% cotton string dipped in wax as the wick. However. the wicks never really stayed in place properly. How do I remedy this? I'd rather not have to buy those little wick holders.

Thank you!

Hey there. I just found you guys by searching for "sew duct tape" on Google. It's been helpful already.

Howdy,
I just bought some essential oils for making bath stuff, but the bottles didn't come with a dropper. I'm thinking glass is better because it won't retain as much smell and makes smaller drops, but can I substitute a plastic dropper from the drugstore, or will the drops be too big or will I run into other problems I haven't thought of...? Thanks!!!

Ok, addendum after being told plastic's no good: where do I get a glass dropper?

My *insert Winter Holiday of Your Choice Here* gifts this year will be simple and classy (feel free to steal this idea).

Step 1) Buy 938629365 Holiday tins on sale at JoAnn Fabrics (or Walmart, or wherever)

Step 2) Get some recipes for cute roll cookies.

Step 3) Make 2938529 rolls of swirly, tasty goodness.

Step 4) Whack n' bake.

Step 5) Pack n' send.

So my question to you is... do you have any good recipes for tasty slice n' bake cookies that you roll and chill before baking? I have a nice mint n' chocolate swirl, but what I would love is something sweet but not chocolate, a diabetic (sugarless or fake sugar, low carb) recipe, and a vegan recipe. So let me know what you got... cuz in a few weeks, I'm goan bake myself into a little frenzy!!!

My girlfriend, [livejournal.com profile] theunderlining, has seen me crochet hats and, now, a poncho for her sister. She's never really asked me to crochet something for her--that is, until recently.

I had her pick out her yarn (Red Heart's Symphony in Persimmon) and tell me what sort of scarf she would like. She wanted something airy, so I chose an N hook with a double crochet stitch throughout. She wanted tassels on the ends and brought me two that didn't match the scarf exactly but funked it up quite a bit. She also wanted the ends of the scarf to drop down to points.

It's around 5-6 feet of goodness gracious.

Now, you can't see all of that so well in the photos she took of herself wearing the scarf. She's a photographer. It's just in her nature to make it more. You can see another photo of her with it on in her journal and she may even post one or two more. I will probably take photos of the details tomorrow sometime. For now, I give you: Read more... )

Darlings, what do we think of this faux dichroic pendant I made

gigantic pic behind cut )

The wrapping looks crappy, mostly because I did it in like 2 minutes, it's just a prototype.

Classy? trashy?

It's a 2x3 piece of glass covered in faux dichroic and liquid glass. It's just wrapped in craft wire because I didn't want to waste any SS wire doing something I don't really know how to do (yet)

Opinions much appreciated

this is my 7th hot head from s&b this xmas. oy. i can do it blindfolded. i've found if you want to put a "yuppie stripe" on it 4, 1, 4, 1, rest of your hat works best. you can alter the pattern to fit a child by using a worsted yarn. the black hat is modeled by sean, he's 11 months. it fits better than it looks like, he kept pushign it off. my son (other boy in pic) has one he loves that fits really well.hat )

i adopted two ferrets recently and anyone who has a ferret knows they need a lot of bedding. well bedding can get expensive and usually the store bought stuff isnt very pretty. so i made my first ferret sleepsack tonight. i think it turned out pretty awesome. its 14.5 x 10. flame cotton outside with anti-pill black fleece inside. all their bedding in this set will be done in these fabrics so itll all match. i plan on making some sets in different fabrics so i can switch them around and whatnot. im pretty impressed since i had no pattern or store bought sleepsack to work off of.

you can see a store made ferret sleepsack here.

Here be the pictures of my J-Rock collection, taken from the photoshooting with photographer Fantasio and my models! Pictures of Fantasio can also be found @ deviantart.com. The model on the first pic is my fabulous friend and fellow fashion designer Michaela alias [livejournal.com profile] luzifurie. :)

Oh yeah, and the hairpieces and wig are by the equally fabulous Samantha a.k.a. [livejournal.com profile] atropab. ;)

ALL outfits are made by myself, including the accessories, from scratch to the finished item. My inspiration were japanese rockstars mixed with a wee bit of fetish accessories. All outfits except one were made of leather, either partly or completely. I also used uv-reactive tulle as well as denim and fake fur and LOTS of metallic parts like piercing rings and d-rings. I used all kinds of leather, from reptile prints to metallic imprinted leather. The bands that inspired me the most for this collection were Dir En Grey, Malice Mizer, Kagrra, Pierrot and Luna Sea.
