It's not super crafty or very neato, but I finally knitted a scarf from start to finish. I'm just very excited! ;P

Greetings and Salutations.

I've been reading the community journal for a few days now and have been so inspired by all of the creativity and craftyness.
Infact, tonight I purchased my first set of knitting needles, and am seeting about learning to knit!
I've always been a crafter at heart and tend to get very excited about the prospect of doing something creative, although deciding exactally what to do is usually the problem.
Thanks for all the inspiration!

In addition to making my first post, I have a question for all of you cross-stitchers.
I am looking for a pattern, or even just examples of Baroque era needlepoint/fancywork. I am looking to embroider a handkercheif, at least somewhat in the style of something that may have been produced in England in 1638/9. Initials, crests, arabesques, floral patterns or anything else would be appropriate, as long as its not a(n) bawdy/unlady like design.

Thanks again for the inspiration! Any help would be greatly appreciated.

An Idea..

I saw this Idea in the news paper, and I thought it was nice. When you get down to the little nub of lipstick [if anyone uses lipstick anymore!] you can press the lipstick into a contact case. The little white plastic ones that say "L and R" work great. As a contact wearer, I always end up with about twenty of them a year. I get free ones from my eye place whenever I ask for a starter kit, and if I'm traveling I buy a travel kit so I don't accidently lose my good [and expensive] case. You can apply the lipstick like lip gloss, or with a brush. I don't know if you need to heat it a little bit to get it to go into the container right, I would imagine you would. I just thought i would share!

Hey everybody! I thought I'd post some of my projects from over the past few months. Sorry that I'm posting links rather than pictures!

I've worked out a sort of pattern to make a pleated kinchaku (Japanese drawstring bag). So far I've made two and am working on the third.
First bag. I was working without a pattern, so I ended up making this bag much taller than is typical to Japanese proportions. But I like it! In this picture I'm carrying it with my kimono. I don't know if you can tell, but I used leftover material to make a han-eri (the innermost kimono collar.)
Second bag. This bag is a present for a friend (and I haven't sent it to her yet! Ugh, I'm a bad friend.) I got the proportions more correct this time. It also helped that I actually, er, measured everything instead of just winging it.
The third bag will be the opposite of these two--plain on the outside, with patterned fabric for the pleats. I'll post a picture as soon as I'm done. Does anyone have any brainstorms about how I could line these bags without losing the increased capacity the pleats allow?

I also made a little sewing kit out of chirimen-esque fabric (it's actually polyester.) The pattern for the fabric is really beautiful. Chirimen crafts are perfect for small scraps of cloth. I made this kit for a older friend of mine who made me some charms out of sea shells.
The front of the kit.
The inside of the kit, including some small accessories.
You can see some of the glue spots where it soaked through the cotton fabric I used for the inside. Fortunately, it's not as noticable in real life. The flash makes it more prominent.

Thanks for looking!

I need some advice from you jewelry makers.
My friend and I decided that we are going to start making and selling Deployment bracelets. We made some for ourselves and now we are constantly asked if we can make them for other people. Some people are already giving my friends orders.

So my questions are these.

For beaded braclets what do you say is the best string/wire/ or cording?
I have been using the wire with the crimp beads, what is the best way to secure off the ends? (Meaning do you leave a long tail and thread it back thru the beading?)

And if anyone has some good online sites for silver charms and other supplies I would be super thankful.

Here are the bracelets if you want to get an idea on what I am talking about.

not nearly as magical as the 90210 wallet i made last night, but still noteworthy....

i also made this kid-sized robot man art-tote which is kinda cute. i will make a few small changes the next time i make this, but it's pretty cute for the most part. there are individual slots on the front pocket for crayons-pens-paintbrushes-etc.

Having grown a little tired of decoupage, I decided to drag out my long-since-neglected sewing machine. It appears I have jumped on the monster train. Ganked from craftster.org or some other where, I give you my girlfriend's birthday monster!

tiny tease

Bring on the monster )

Names currently in the running are Ralph, Henry and Milton. I think my next monster will have a zipper in the back of his head for a stuffed, felt light bulb.

... that I heart this community?  I just joined a couple of weeks ago.... I do knitting, decoupage, duct tape, and any kooky ideas that involve getting glitter all over the floor.  I've been thinking recently (after seeing a lot of the cool things you guys make) about getting a sewing machine and dabbling into that... I searched through memories and found all the information I could ever need, plus some stuff about knitting and decorating my dorm room.

You guys are so helpful.  I heart you!

There was a posting here of a girl that knit a shrug overnight. It was a small blue one that she gave the link to the pattern. I have looked in Sep, Oct, Nov,Dec, 2004 archives and still cant find it. If you are out there please send the link.

Thanks

Hey there crafty ones. I am embarking on a hellacious car ride on Friday...Detroit to Miami...22 hours. But...I get to go on a Caribbean cruise after that, so it's worth it
I'm wondering what your favourite travel crafts are. I'm thinking that I'm going to sew up a bunch of iPod jackets and do a lot of sketching, but I don't know what else.
Come, share your knowledge!

Thank you, and good evening.

Has anyone here ever coated a flower in resin to preserve it? Like hence.

If so. HOW DO I DO THAT? Thanks. <3

Birdies

birdies )

both purses are 6" deep, 8.5" wide, and 2.75" wide (from the sides)
and handles are approx 17" long
it's cardboarded, to have a sturdy feel to it. it small and light. and the little feet protect it from icky things on the table or ground.
the interior lining, is connected. the only stitched part is the side where when you push the 2 sides together, the stitched part goes in rather than out.

if you can tell, i had about 5 trial and errors before i became really satisfied with it.

each purse took me over 12 hours to work finish. everything is handstitched, except for the handles

i'll be putting them on my website (www.ni-cherndesigns.com) next week, after i make about 2 more... with different designs.

couple of questions:
there was a post a few days ago that i cannot find, even though i swear i bookmarked it. it was about small owls that someone got from an exchange student from Japan (or something like that, if im mistaken i apologize)... they were soooo cute! does anybody have that link saved somewhere?

i got a call from javis davis today... i ordered some swatches and they left a voicemail saying to call them back. does anyone know why they do this? im not 18 yet, will they check? does that have to do with anything?

what do you all stuff your little monsters with? i dont have any of the stuffing material, or cotton balls, so im kind of stuck on that. youve all inspired me to make some monsters :)

thank you in advance!

I don't know if this is craft related enough, so if it isn't I understand why you're going to take it down.

I have a question to all those who manage to take awesome pictures of their earrings they make. How do you do it? I try to do it with my digital and they are either blurry, or not focussed enough. I've tried and tried and I can't seem to do it. Please fill be in on your secrets! Thanks!

I have 2 questions tonight.

Question 1. I bought ((this)) fabric today. Up until this point I've never worked with any type of fabric other than your standard cotton-y kind. Not quite sure how to describe this, but it's almost like plastic in a way. Polyester maybe, I'm not sure. It's very shiny too though you can't really tell from the picture. Would it be ok to use iron-on interfacing on fabric like that or would it melt it?

Question 2. I also bought ((these)) fat quarters today, fell in love with them as soon as I saw it. I honestly have no clue what I could make out of material this size besides a wallet...any ideas?

Okay kids, super quick question...

I have these here Creepers in black.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

I love 'em to death, but I got them when I was, like, 13, and I'm not a big fan of the skulls anymore. Would it be all horrible and disasterous if I (very carefully!) seam-ripped the skulls off my Creepers and painted on another symbol/shape/thing in its place? Like, would it leave gaping holes or something? I don't want to ruin them!

They're leather, if that helps any.

Thanks! :)

ISO Ideas

I am going to have my 2nd and 3rd grade students make concrete poems (poems that are in the shape of something related to the subject-such as a giraffe-or form the shape of the letters of the title) and I want to offer them a creative way to do this. I've thought of having them write the poems in crayon and go over it with watercolors, which makes the crayon stand out, but that seems pretty confining in terms of allowing them to express their individual ideas... I was hoping there might be some other ideas out there that are more creative but still within an 8 or 9 year old's ability level.

Thanks so much for your input!
