Here are some pics of my Bespin Leia (from The Empire Strikes Back) costume in progress. The embroidery is going to take forever - I hope to have it done for a convention in July.

I just finished the first panel: pics of crazy embroidery )

(the blue washes out, and it will be ironed when I'm done)

For reference, here's the original costume from the movie: http://www.padawansguide.com/leia_bespin_exhibit.shtml

I've already looked through a bunch of things, but I thought I might ask for more opinions before I do this. I want to decorate a dog collar and leash, but I don't know the best way to go about it. My first thought was to create a stencil the right size and just spray paint it. Then I thought there might be a better option that would last longer. I have a sort of fabric pen, but it doesn't stay very well. Is there something I could use that would be pretty durable? Or should I just try to sew the pattern - if so, any tips on working with that type of material?

I got about three or four cups of Peridot, uncut and unpolished, stone. Peridot is apparently very popular right now, and I didn't even realize it. I was going to take the stone and glue them to a cigar box to look like grass. Anyway, I was looking on some websites about polishing, but they all require a bunch of tools. I was wondering if anyone knows if I can just throw it in a rock tumbler. The stones aren't very large at all, the biggest one being about half a carrot perhaps. I didn't know if I polish them if they will just.. get too small to use. I haven't used a rock tumbler since I was about 10, so I don't remember anything about it.

I do have powdered Diamond, which is used in cutting and polishing, but I have no idea how.

Any help?

I checked the memories/FAQ and maybe I overlooked something but I couldn't find anything on the most efficient way to dye a jean jacket black (I have a couple that I want to do). I was considering using RIT based on topics I read in the memories, but if anyone has any other suggestions on what dye to use or any tips on ensuring an even dye job and lasting color, can you please help me out? It would be very much appreciated... thanks.

Thanks to everyone who helped me with my picture taking question. I didn't take the best pics (cuz I don't have a tripod and nothing to prop my camera up to stabilize it), but here's the beginning. I'll get the hang of it soon!

you can hang them... )

Has anyone found a good sealant to use on projects painted with paint pens? Everything I have causes the paint to run. Krylon Triple Thick, Matte Finish, and even the cheap stuff from the dollar store.

Maybe I don't need to seal it at all? Feh.

Hey craftsters!

I would like to make some "envelopes" out of glassine (which is like glorified wax paper) by stitching with a sewing machine up 3 sides of the traditional envelopey rectangle.

Our sewing machine is older than me - so its real basic and its nothing new fangled or from any era ending in 80's or 90's.

I was thinking of using just normal thread. Pink be the color!

Got any tips or hints for stitching on paper? I am crossing my fingers that you do!

Thanks in advance!

Well, as you all may know, opening day for baseball season is approacing and I'm a Texas Rangers fan. Here's my question: If I wanted to make a blanket with their logo, would handstitching the fleece work well or would I need to buy one of those handheld $15 sewing machines? I cant afford a real sewing maching and I dont know what would work best with fleece because I don't sew (yet). Thanks guys! Any help would be appreciated! Also, and tips on how to sew fleece best would make you my new best friend!

Hey everyone! I haven't posted here in months :(

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone had a creative suggestion for me. I collect "Hello My Name Is" stickers that I get signed by various musicians at cocnerts I attend. Right now they're scattered throughout my desk and some of them are in baseball card protecter sleeves because I don't know what else to do with them. I was hoping someone could come up with a creative and relatively inexpensive way to display them. I found a baseball card-type display frame at Michael's but it only holds around 20 cards and it was like $30. I would consider putting them all together in collage form in one huge frame, but I continually collect autographs at shows so I am trying to think of a way that I'll be able to expand my collection as I go along. ANY suggestions are greatly appreciated! Otherwise I suppose I could scrapbook...

Alsoooo...I have a limited edition signed t-shirt of a band that broke up...so it's kind of rare. Any good ideas on how to display it? I checked the memories on framing t-shirts but the ideas won't necessarily work well for me. I don't want to ruin the shirt in any way. All the autographs are on the top half of the shirt where the design is, so I don't even care if the bottom half of the t-shirt is shown. Sorry if I don't make sense. Oh, and the shirt is red, the design is black and it's an upside down van, in reference to an accident that they had gotten into.

Thanks in advance!

Hallo, everyone.

What's the best way to put a tiny hole through a shell for jewelry without breaking it?

I've decided to have a tea party for my birthday and I thought since we don't have any nice napkins, it'd be neat to make and embroider my own. I'm no good at drawing, so I found some designs on the internet that I'd like to use for the embroidery and thought I'd print them out on iron-on transfer paper to use on my napkins. However, I'm having a very hard time with the transfers. I'm using the Office Max brand and it didn't come with any instructions whatsoever. I've experimented a bit, but I'm not getting much of anywhere. The design is half on the paper and half on the test cloth. Also, the design comes off on this weird peely film that I don't really want to have on my napkins. Is that just how transfer paper works? Can I get it to come off after I embroider? What should I do to get a clean transfer?

ok, you know how ive been making "poofs" ? well ... i am actually a graphic designer and im taking a class where we primarily use flash.... so what did i do? i made them the subjects of my interactive assignment!!

ok, watch this one first:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v38/jshee/blue_no_dance.swf

and pretend the dance party button works
if it did it would lead you to this:
(make sure your speakers are up)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v38/jshee/jr.swf

i ended up going back and adding sound clips to most of the buttons on the first one (ie baby crying .wavs for the "nos" and cooing for the "yes" and pops for the feature selections) but i dont have the internet space to upload the whole thing soooo youll have to use your imagination. *trust me, they sounded great

someone needs to buy me a domain so i can actually host whole files. breaking it up just is not the same.

and speaking of that...I have one more question !
okay.. my aim name is "hell yes jess" and lots of my friends call me hellyesjess... like if there are two jessicas in the room and someone asks "which jessica" they will say hell yes jess... ah you get the idea. i'm in the process of putting together an online store or some sorts (probably after the flash class!) and was wondering if the name hellyesjess would be a good domain name/a name i should stick with. ive kind of already built up a reputation with it but im a little concerned that it isnt "professional" enough? like it might not be trusting enough that someone would want to send me money because of it? on the other hand, i do have a style that is sort of crazy so maybe it WOULD be ok. im torn! help!
*or if you are familiar with my work and have any other ideas for a name, let me know!

thank you!!

[edit] i lied! i have one more question. im actually in the midst of starting a clothing line/company with a friend and we would like to set up a message board/idea journal that only him and i could post to. are there such sites that offer this kind of service? cost isnt really an issue so if we would have to pay something that would be ok. if not, we might do the closed community livejournal thing as a last resort.

ah! so much text. sorry!!

Are there wool yarns that work better for felting, or will any yarn that is 80-100% wool do?
I know that yarns that are pretreated (superwashed) are not suitable..

Anyone? Thanks!

Question:

Resin. I want to coat some small food items in resin, so that they don't rot. NOw I have the resin (gedeo crystal resin), so do I just dip let dry then do another couple of coats? How can I leave them to dry without the resin coming away from an area? I think it's something along the similar lines as resin coating flowers...

Help much appreciated.

helloooo fellow crafters!

working on a 21st birthday present for my boy who lives very far away, and i have the idea, but i need help with one last bit...

i'm going to make him a wooden box which i have collaged and cut a heart out of the top of, which i am filling with pretty scraps of paper that all have a different reason why i love him on them. now, this is a very impatient boy, so i know that, although the idea is, he reads one every day, he will actually read many a day and maybe a whole bunch at once when he first gets them. so i wanted to give him something to go along with the box, where he could put the pieces of paper onto something else, like a collage or bulletin board, but pretty looking, so that way, he can still add one each day until we see each other again, although he might have read them already.

but! i don't know what this magical larger object for sticking paper onto should be. not corkboard, it isn't pretty enough. i thought of one of those cloth ribbon boards, but i'm worried the strips of paper are too small and will fall through. any ideas, suggestions? nothing is too fanciful- this is a big birthday and i love him very much. i want to make it spectacular!!

Hey. I'm Megan. First time poster...very long time lurker. But today I was bored and making a new LJ and figured it was probably time I joined. Heh.

Anyhow...here's a shirt I stenciled a while ago but it's the only photos I've got right now. Hopefully I'll get around to posting some of the other millions of projects I've got going. : )

Ok, delete this if its too off topic.
But I'm going on a 3 day trip to NYC and was wondering if there are some other craftygrrls who can recommend some great places to go for crafty stuff, cute stuff, and have just plain fun.
Ideas?
Thank you! <3

I'm pretty sure some of you craftygrrls have ratlets or ferrets. Have any of you made harnesses for walking your little guys? My daughter is pining for harnesses for her boys but I'm afraid I'll buy them and the little furslugs will lie around in them and do nothing. I'd rather take the time to make some for them, I don't mind and I have a ton of materials around the place.

Hello ladies (and gents)!

Sorry but I don't have anything crafty to post just yet.. I just discovered this community a few days ago, and went through loads of entries instead of working on some essays I had to do.. I felt so inspired by the posts in here and links to outside sites (especially craftster!) that I decided to begin craft again. I used to make and sell beaded necklaces and jewelery, but it's been a while.. Anyway, the very next day I went and got supplies for a bunch of stuff. I'm going to be working on a bunch of projects this weekend, while I have a break from school and will be at my parents' house (with my glue gun!).

Anyway, this ambition and motivation is really getting to my head, and I've decided I'm going to try to sell some stuff in various festivals over the summer. I went here to design some free business cards (the site is legit, my mum and sis have both used it - you just pay shipping). Here's what I've got so far: )

I'm just having trouble coming up with a slogan (better than what I've got there..). Any ideas? Anyway, thanks for your time and the inspiration to craft!! (And hopefully that link to the 250 free business cards will come in handy to some..)

cute.

this semester i am taking a class called art magazines and publications. it's an art history class. the other day in class our professor had us use part of the class to think up a proposal for some sort of magazine that we would be interested in. so my friend kaitlyn and i came up with a fun idea and we plan on making it for our final project.

and so, i'd like some feedback on whether or not you guys would find this to be a fun publication and if you'd participate.

it's a little something like this )

so yeah, i realize that is probably a really horrible explanation and you guys are all thinking WORST IDEA EVER, SARAH, WAY TO GO. but seriously, it seems that a lot of you like to be involved in exchanges, so i thought i would share the idea because kaitlyn and i are pumped.

also, if our proto-type comes together well, we might send a few out, just as a test and i will need some dedicated crafters/artist as testers. :)
