DIY Little mexican altars

I remember shopping my local mexican store (now extinct) Raices and
seeing them charge 20.00 for DIY altar kits.I thought that was total
BS and went home to brainstorm how I could create one at home without
paying 20.00 (unless of course,I wanted to make it really special, heh)
for supplies.

here is some examples of little altars:
http://www.joeking.com/shop/altars/

you can go to your local 99 cent store and pick up a box of tea with a
wooden box,or scour your local grocery store. You can use nail polish
as the paint, and use bright colours, such as red, orange, green, etc.
feel free to experiment and use such things as skulls, saint pictures, etc.
or if you want to make it extra personal, you can put family photos inside
(like for dia de los muertos, deceased family). Here is one that I made for
my brother's girlfriend for this past christmas:

Hi all,

I am wondering if anyone has any ideas on what do to for sticky resin?? I used a new latex mold with some of my stuff, and they are taking FOREVER to completely cure. While the fronts of the pieces are great, the backs are still sticky. I'm wondering if they will EVER completely cure, although through time they slowly are. At least, they aren't as bad now as they were a week ago.

Chalk it up to experience? Or give it more time? Or is there something I can do to speed up this process? I don't know if it's the latex, or the fact that I added color (but I've done color before with success).

Just very frustrating and I have no idea what the problem actually IS so I can prevent it next time.

I am interested in learning how to crochet. Are there any books similar to Stich and Bitch that is for learning how to crochet? Or does Stich & Bitch cover crocheting as well as knitting? What is a good resource to learn how to crochet from?

I have made in the past 1/2 of a scarf from knitting but my roomate who was showing me how to do it moved out thus I stopped working on it and promptly forgot how. But I think I would rather crochet because I've heard it is faster, right?

Thanks.

Does anyone know of some good tutorials for a pinata that is not balloon shaped (because I know how to make those)?

I want to make a square one for my son's birthday. It's a Spongebob theme. I made one for his birthday last year, but the basic shape started off with a balloon base.

The store bought ones are usually cardboard, expensive and impossible for child to break.

I recently "inheireted" a huge bag of material from my grandmother, including a very large amount of grey plaid-ish material, and a beautiful dusty pink material. [She had planned to make a blazer from them, but never got around to it.]

So, my friend Robert has been single for awhile, so I crocheted him a little something to make up for it.

I crocheted this on an Amtrak train, and got several funny looks.

So I'm visiting my cousin in a week or so and -being both broke and crafty- I want to knit a hat for her little daughter.

BUT! Since I don't have a lot of contact with toddlers and because running up to children in the mall and measuring the circumferences of random children is generally frowned upon, I was wondering if I could get some advice here.

What sort of measurements would I be looking at for a knit hat for a two-year-old? I'm using sport weight yarn on size nine (US) needles.

Thanks, all!

So, a friend of mine came to me with the question of how to write something on a towel.
She wants to put a quote from the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy on a towel and we just can't quite figure out how to do this effectively.
Her sewing machine isn't friendly enough for her to make letters with. So I thought about stenciling (like you would a shirt, but modified a little for the texture of the towel). But I'm afraid it would soak through.
Do you lovely ladies have any suggestions about how to go about effectively doing this?

Thanks in advance!

My latest craft obsession has been making "custom" My Little Ponies by rehairing, repainting, adding accessories, etc.

What I want to do is something unique- I want to "scent" the ponies (right now I am making a Cosmopolitan one that I want to scent with cranberry and lime). I figured the best thing to use would be the scent oils I use for soap making since they are by their nature safe for human skin (and hopefully, subsequently, ponies!).

I am wondering what I can do that won't ruin the plastic/vinyl they're made out of since I plan on selling some of these and want to make something that will last. I have one pony that's my tester pony that I try things out on (poor thing). I tried mixing scent oil in with the sealant I use, and that just made it sticky. I tried combing a very small amount into the pony's hair but that made it very oily. The other thing I tried that was most successful  was dabbing some oil inside a pony with a q-tip and then blow drying the inside of the pony to quickly lock in the scent and not have wet oil inside the pony. But I still don't know if this is something that could cause it to rot out or discolor over time- anyone have ANY ideas of what I can try?

I should mention I use acrylic paints and sometimes add Polymer clay parts (ie, horns/wings) and I have heard polymer clay can be scented- anyone heard of this? can acrylic paints be scented in any way? again, any other ideas on how to scent a My Little Pony?

Oh, if you want to see pictures of the ones I've made so far, my site is http://home.comcast.net/~kalydscopeeyes/. My favorite is my Marilyn Monroe one :)

Thank you girls, for any ideas!

I've been making photography books for a while, but I'm tired of doing them with my own photos.  I've decided to post in a few lj communities and propose an idea.  If anyone wants to participate, please email me at  stephaniewallace@gmail.com for my address.

I want anyone and everyone to take one photo.  Any size that's 5X7 or smaller.  It can be a photograph of anything, in color, black and white, sepiatone, whatever.  You can color on the photo, write words over it, draw on the back, sign it, pretty much anything you want to do to the photo is fine with me as long as it doesn't reach more than 1/2 cm in thickness.  After you finish with the photo, send it to me and I'll put it in the book.  I'll post pictures of the book as it progresses in my own journal, so people can look at their photos and see others, as well.  I may even end up making prints of the book for others who want one.

is something wrong with [livejournal.com profile] craftgrrl or livejournal?
i clicked "earlier" on the navigation of the main page, and it brings me back --
then when i scroll down, there is only "later" -- as if there are no more previous entries??
however, when i click archives they are there - but yikes! this is frustrating. i want to see everything on one page!

anyone else seeing this?

Yay finally a picture post from me! I got batteries in my camera at last.

I made a couple things, though some of them i don't think are very good/remarkable, and they are stuck in my journal for interest's sake, but i *am* kind of proud of this skirt..so..

I took a pair of armyish stretchy girly pants from value village, and turned them into a cute little skirt

i also took some bunny fabric, some fusable interfacing, and lots of time and frustration to make my first (very faux) waist cincher type thing. Though darn it, i forgot the darts and didn't add much detail. perhaps later, though i'm not sure about adding darts *now* (this is the problem with making your own patterns while having a limited understanding of the sewing process...reinforcing seams, thinking ahead, etc..*sigh*)

onto pictures! )
