I can't sleep so I made a photo-book with pictures from my little brother's vacation that he just spent with me.

Come look inside... )

Hello all,
I hadn't finished anything in a bit, but had a looming deadline for the La Superette craft show that sparked my creativity.

I got this neat box that has a top that can sit upright on a built in easel or can sit flat and got a neat idea for a sea portable altar. When you open the drawer it has one of my faces and then I painted the body of the mermaid. At the bottom is a collage of sea shells, different colored pearls and copper spirals. The drawer pull is made from a really cool glass bead that I put on.

Everything I've read about Speedball screen printing ink says "NOT for use on nylon." Does anyone know why? I want to use it to stencil on a messenger bag because it's durable, but it's a polyester/nylon blend. If this is going to end up with disasterous results, what should I use? Is acrylic paint + textile medium durable enough?

I'm excited. :D I got a $5 men's shirt at Wal-Mart and two $15 hoodies (with embroidered logos I have to cut off) to stencil. One shirt and hoodie are for me, the other hoodie is for my boyfriend's brother. :D Right now Wal-Mart has thinner plain hoodies for $9, which would be awesome for stenciling! I tend to wear the crap out of my hoodies, though, so I opted for the thicker one.

Hello! I am just getting into the swing of things in terms of creating merch, marketing, etc. The only thing that I constantly struggle with are prices! I have turned to friends for some items, math for others (simple material costs + labour stuff), and now I turn to you all!

My question is, how much do I charge for shirts similar to this:

peek! )

The materials were $11, but the time would be calculated as 2-3 hours!!! My lowest hourly rate being $11/hr. $44 seems a little steep for a shirt, no? If, however, I reduce my rate to minimum wage (about $6) that is still $35. Is this too much to charge for a shirt? I spent a lot of time on it making sure that all of the seams were serged and that the fit was right. I will probably get faster as I adapt to making more shirts like these (this is my first 3/4 sleeve and I made the red shirt body from scratch). Should I take a loss on this shirt or suck it up and demand proper compensation?

I hope this type of question is allowed; it isn't an advertisement since the shirt would not be sold online, but at a local diy craft event.

ERK?!

Did some new faces for pendants and was really in a sea shell kind of mood :) I also have been having alot of fun with some pretty metalic paints and some bright colors. I had a dream about the black and white face that I did and am going to wrap it in silver wire with either black or red as the accent color. I kept thinking red but Lee says I should go with the black wire so that it is all monocramatic on the setting just like the face and fe may very well be right. I also love the snowflake face with the nighttime blue background. I think it will look lovely for the holidays.

Thanks so much to everyone that helped me with my crochet question earlier this week. I have another one, but more yarn related. I have about ten million balls of pattons classic merino wool. I was going to try and use them up for christmas presents. According to the package, it's a medium weight, but when I go to make this hat http://hometown.aol.com/JSchlossma/ezdcc.html I find that the yarn is clearly to small a gauge. Is it ok just to use two strands? I have almost no access to a decent yarn store (there are two here in Buffalo. One is VERY expensive and a bit stuck up, and the other I can't find to save my life) and don't really have the time (or any money!) to wait for an online order, although if the pattern is going to look goofy this way, then I'll make time!

Any other suggestions?

Thanks a bunch,

1) Would people be interested in a tutorial on hemming pants using bobby pins instead of straight pins? (memories isn't available)

2) So this is not text-only, newly made necklace )

The local animal shelter is having a Christmas Bazaar.. so I made some CAT BEDS for them to sell. )

I also made a bag. Not as interesting... )

EDITED TO ADD : If you really want your kitty to enjoy this, make a little compartment for catnip! I did that with one bed ... they destroyed it pretty quickly but they did love lounging in it :)
xposted to [livejournal.com profile] squid_ink when I get around to it..

Ok, so I'm making my best friend a beanie with my knifty knitter.

He really loves the style of beanies that has the little mini bill in the front.
Ex:

I know how to make the brim that goes all the way around the hat- but I don't know how to make one of those. I don't care about the square shape- just the bill.
would it look weird if I only folded over only a small portion of the already knitted part onto the pegs and stuck a little piece of curved cardboard... or something in between (like how you would for making the brim)?

I hope that makes sense.

Thanks for all of your help, ladies!

Can someone please tell me if it is possible to scent polymer clay? I looked through the memories and found nothing on the subject. Have any of you done this? Can you tell me how you did please? I'd really like to scent my own clay rather than buying prescented clay.

Thank you!

ok girls... i've been enjoying craftgrrl for a while now, you all have such great ideas! i love it!

well, i have decided to create a community dedicated to USELESS knowledge, stuff i know beyond crafts. I decided that after i found my art professors asking ME about which materials to use and started getting phone calls in the middle of the night from friends and classmates regaurding triva or DIY projets...i had to be different. No one knows THIS MUCH "useless" crap..or do they? I got the idea to start a community based on people with just this type of knowledge! so come and join and share! i'd LOVE to hear what advise you all have!

The first entry is pretty useful for me...i'm clutzy.

cheers, PIRK.

The fruits of todays labour. Check out more of exos stuffs :)

Because I so frequently get asked this question I'm going to answer it:
Where do you get your charms?

I have an obsession with buying trinkets from ebay, dollar stores, thrift stores, flea markets, wholesellers, from around the world, on ebay, and at garage sales! Oh! I also handmake polmyer clay charms, which is terribly fun too. :) YAY

Did you hear about the new airport in town?
Yeah, thats right. Air exo :)

okay so my friend had a sublime guitar pick necklace, but lost it. now he's searching for a new guitar pick necklace, but he's thinking of getting a couple, apart from a new sublime one. i did a little search, and ordered a foo fighters pick.

click to see the pick )

because i couldn't find any foo fighters guitar pick necklaces, i figured i'd get a pick and then make it into a necklace. however ... now i'm wondering how i'm going to get a hole in the pick without completely ruining it. do you think there's a dremel bit that could do this? cause i have a friend with a dremel. how easy do you all think this would be? and has anyone had experience with this?
