here are some harry potter themed items that I've made:

these are cell phone/key charms. I change the top part based on whether it's a cell phone charm or a key charm. there are four for each house color, and the one in the middle is for house unity.

here are some house color earrings. this photo just shows the Gryffindor ones, but I make them in all four house colors:

hope you like them!

I just bought this heavy duty snap kit to use on wallets, but the directions are pretty bad and I am stumped. If anyone has worked with snaps, can you help a girl out?

Do you have any suggestion about how to do it? I especially don't know where to find the plastic covers in which you store the Cd..
I searched on the memories but couldn't find anything..

I hope this isn't too OT, but I thought you Grrls would like my new comic strip, launching today:

It's basically about a group of quirky crafters, like yourselves.

I'd like to introduce my characters )

It doesn't load very well on some connections, but if you refresh a few times it should come up. I'm hoping to switch hosting to comicgenesis.com, which should hopefully be a bit better.

It'll be updating daily, so keep checking back!

What do you think?

EDIT: Now I have a "large print" option, which gives you the comic double-size if your eyes complain at the teeniness of the normal size.

I need some advice. I bought this beautiful fabric with a Japanese Fan print in hot pink and purple color. I was using it to make a messenger bag from a McCall's pattern and for some reason it didn't turn out quite right. I don't know what I did wrong with this pattern but I was so disappointed that I used the fabric on something that didn't turn out right. It's somewhat a disaster. I was thinking of ripping the seams and recycling the material to sew something else. Maybe another bag like the Jordy bag.

I used about 1 yard of fabric. Has this ever happen to anyone with a pattern? Any ideas of other things I can sew with this fabric?

Thanks.

Most of you probably already know this, but I figured I'd give those who don't a heads-up.

This spray-on fabric paint:
Image hosted by Photobucket.com
is UTTER CRAP.

Not only was it difficult to use, and bled under my stencil because it was so runny, but I washed my finished hoodie for the first time last night and it basically ALL WASHED OUT. And I heat-set it and everything. Now I have to re-do the whole thing.

Very irritating, to say the least.

I'm just going to go over it with regular acrylic/textile medium.

On that note, does anyone know how to make acrylic stay on acrylic? My stencil is multi-layered with different colors, but the acrylic that overlapped washed right off. Any ideas? (Again, I heat-set the crap out of it beforehand).

Thanks guys!!!

Has anyone ever made a stencil to be used on concrete or pavement? We're planning a shindig in the spring and I thought it would be fun to have stencils in the driveway to go with the theme of the party, so people can see it as they come up to the house.. (with water based paint so it will wash away)...

I figure it would require stiff plastic for the stencil, and an exacto knife... but has anyone made a person sized stencil? about 4-5 feet?

any and all suggestions welcome! Thx.

added : if you can suggest some 'street art' DIY sites that may have a tutorial or tips, that would be appreciated too! :)

I've been trying a lot of news things lately, so I apologize for the lack of production of any final products.

I have a question, however, for the crocheting bunch out there. I can't seem to get the ripples down. Here's an example: Ripples. For now, I'd just like to make a scarf.

Can anyone provide simpler instructions, or a simpler variation of that one?

**Edit: Found! After some more fervent searching, I found this and answered my own question. Hope some of you try this and post the results! http://www.craftyarncouncil.com/projects/jan99_crochproj.html

Alright Craftsters, this post, although lacking in eye-candy, is a plea for some sweet ideas!

I'm going to be dipping things in white chocolate, milk chocolate, and caramel and making baskets up for Christmas gifts.

So tap into your chocoholic side and tell me what you would like to see dipped in chocolate. I need ideas!

So far I'm thinking:
-oreos
-pretzel rods
-whole apples (candy-apple style only with caramel chocolate and nuts)
-nutter butters
-marshmallows
-dried fruit
-clusters of caramel popcorn

Thank You Notecards

just some 'thank you' notecards i sent out to those that gave me birthday gifts. they're made from colored cardstock and some cutouts of flower & leaf shapes from magazine pages.

and also, because this was also diy, my very first matted photographs! the two photographs are 5"x5" holga 120 shots from baker's beach in san francisco, california.. the actual matte boards are cut to 14" x 17". took me forever in class today to do layout lines and learn how to use the matte cutter properly, but i finally did it!

ok, so in the past when i have tried to use iron on patches, they never seem to really stick. am i doing something wrong? how hot should the iron be, and how long should i leave it on the patch?

edit: thanks for all the input guys! i got the iron pretty hot (cotton setting for a cotton sweater) and used a moderate amount of pressure. it seems to have taken hold pretty nicely, but to be safe i stitched around the perimeter of the patch.

i'd take a picture, but it was my brother's friend's sweater, and it is gone now. he brings me his clothes to mend cause he is useless with a needle and thread!

also, i always get such nice icon compliments from this community. thanks! :)

First prototype for xmas gifts is done! I stitched up this ipod cosy freehand with some embroidery thread, and I rather like how it turned out:) It's a bit big for my mini, but I figure that means it will work out in terms of size for the full-sized ones. At the bottom left, there is a spot for the headphone cord to plug in!
Here's the inside! )

I'm being lame and giving my two sisters cash for Xmas this year. But I wanted to give it in a special way. I searched the web, but didn't find anything up my alley. I looked in my craft and gift notebook, but nothing looked right. I mentioned my dilema to my brilliant boyfriend who told me about this really neat trick you can do with fortune cookies. It's not really crafty per se, but it is just too cool of an idea not to post. Read more... )

I'm planning on making some soap this weekend. I want to use glycerin and put little objects in the bars, but I can't find a basic bar mold. I live in NYC and its kind of lacking in craft stores. I've already checked out the Pearl Paint craft store. They had glycerin and some non-bar molds.
I have two questions
Does anyone know another craft store that sells soap making stuff in NYC?
Does anyone know how to make basic bar shapes sans mold? cake pan or something?

Finishing the ipod cosy made me want to play with felt some more;)This one's a wallet! )

Toothbag

Toothbag, originally uploaded by superminx.

My five year old lost his first tooth a couple of days ago. In preparation I had made him a toothbag so that the tooth fairy would have no trouble finding it under his pillow. She replaced the tooth in the bag with a shiny gold coin and Caelan was very thrilled! This bag is the duplicate I made for my 4 year old.

I'm doing a project for a christmas present and I need to print some photos off on fabric. I know that there are packets of printable fabric that you can buy, like this one:
http://www.bettymills.com/shop/product/view/AVE3384?source=google
or this one:
http://www.junetailor.com/photoprints.htm

I've used those types of products before and they worked excellently, but unfortunately they're way too expensive, considering how many photos I need to print off. What I need to know is if there is a certain fabric that i can cut into 8X11 sheets, like the size of regular printer paper, and put it through my printer?

I tried earlier, but my printer jammed every time I tried to put the fabric through. Anyone have any suggestions or tutorials? I'll give you a bajillion dollars.

Thanks!

Anyone know what's goin on with Craftster? I'm dying!!! Especially aroudn this dire holiday season time :0(
[identity profile] lonelystars.livejournal.com
So I was in the mall the other day and walked by a book store. they had this beautiful window display of (what I imagine was paper) paper birds.

and it made me wonder. What happens to those when the holidays are over?

And can I get it somehow?!?!

so my question is, anybody work in retail- What do they do with the displays? throw them out? give them back to corporate?

I might just have to make my way back to the mall and mosey on in there and ask. cause I want 'em!
