I was knitting up a swatch for the Turquoise Lace Sweater (pattern twenty-eight) in Rebecca issue 31, and came across a problem.

The lace pattern called for says that it is worked over 4 stitches, and following it says:

Row/round 1: yarn-over, 1 slip dec (=slip 1 knitwise, K1, pass slipped st. over); K2 tog, yarn-over.

And this is what I did: I did a standard yarn over, passed the extra stitch onto the other needle, knitted one, passed the extra stitch over to make it a slip-stitch decrease, and then I did the K2tog and another yarn-over after the K2tog. It seems to be taking up more stitches than it should. Am I doing something wrong? Because I knitted a couple of rows following the lace pattern exactly as the way it says for rows/rounds 1 and 2 (2 is basically a straight knit or purl row) and it didn't even come close as how it is seen in the modeled picture.

Please help me if you can. And I am able to provide more info. if necessary.

P.S.
This is also my first time working with yarn-overs.

I'm exhausted. I've been knitting ALL night.

& heres the pics to prove it ) That's all. Next project I'm working on: a crocheted baby blanket. I'm about 1/4 done. It's going to take me FOREVER though anyway.

I haven't posted here in a long long time. I am posting here today to get some opinions from those of you who use polymer clay.

I have some training and talent in ceramics, but right now it's not possible for me to work in ceramics, so I have been thinking about polymer clay. How well will my ceramics skills translate? Of course there will be differences, I know, but am I going to be able to do a lot of the same things? I am not a fan of the wheel, preferring more organic and sculptural approaches to clay, so throwing is not an issue.

I'd also love to hear what brands/types of clay you like best, and why.

This is mask of the wolf. We have made it of a leather and fur of a goat. A teeth are made of strong plastic.

hello - i'm a 22 year old metalworker who does some stuff with wood on the side. i have one more semester of college before i graduate with a degree in "crafts," which i think is awesome. ;) i handmake everything, except for the stones i use.

my most recent project is making fancy perfume-bottle-esque stoppers for plastic soda bottles. this one is for coke bottles:

photo showing cap on bottle
side view

it is sterling silver, the cap itself is functional (screws onto the bottle) and was cast from the existing cap while the fancy bit is fabricated and pierced sheet silver.

I'm thinking about trying to knit this: http://www.knitty.com/ISSUEsummer05/PATTsaranac.html

I've never knitted a sweaterbefore, do you think it would absolutely kill me? (oh, and I'm a afairly amateur knitter, but beyond the bits that make it a sweater, I think I have most of the pattern directions under control)

Hi guys!

I was looking through my house for #6 plastic... and oddly enough I have on hand 1,2,4,5 plastic, no 6 though... I might have some in the recycle bin....Rich took out the Garbage yesterday.

The real question is, once I acquire said plastic, will my Sharpy markers work to color it before I shrinky dink it? also, what are the best oven temp/time combos to set it... I suppose my mini-blowtorch probably won't be a great idea to shrink the plastic either... :)

Does any other plastic shrink, or only the #6?

Thanks!

hello everybody...
i'm very curious as to where you purchase your yukatas and kimonos, and where do you buy your japanese fabrics? i reside in singapore and these items are so rare, it's almost non-existant! i really wish to get my hands on them... do you all have any recommendations of online stores or can help me to purchase them? i have paypal. ;) thanks in advance!

mods: i hope this is allowed...

odd supply question.

when you go to neighborhoodies to have an item made, the letters are those thin, semi shiny ones. (possibly some sort of vinyl?) if it makes sense to anyone, they're similiar to the packs you can get at walmart for like 67 cents.

however. if you want shapes on your hoodie (like hearts) they just cut them out of large sheets of that material that has heat activated adhesive?

does anyone know where i can get these, or better yet, what you CALL this material so i can google it??

thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ♥

edit: i want it to be the exact material that iron on letters are made out of...the thin, kind of vinylish stuff with the adhesive on the back...not the flocked kind tho, definately the paper thing glossier stuff.

I searched the memories, but couldn't find and answer.

I got some vitamin E oil today at the health food store. This is what the lady gave me. Now, it's mixed with a whole bunch of other oils and says for external use only.... Is this ok to use in lip balm, or should I take it back and just buy the little capsules? (I didn't buy it here.... they just have the product)

I am still waiting on my flavor oils... I got mango, fuzzy navel, juicy pear and upon the requests of some of you..... coconut! :)

I just want to make them now!!!!!! The only thing I have as far as oils is peppermint, patchouli, rose and sweet orange.... and I don't really care for any of those as flavors! :)

Thanks Gals!

In a fit of organizing, I finally put up a bunch of Japanese craft books up on FlickR, with ISBN numbers and mini reviews. I know how frustrating it is to pick out books online, by just the covers.

My church does a service auction as a fundraiser every year. I've donated knitting lessons in this regard. Does anyone have resources on teaching knitting to beginners?

Also, before the auction, we have dinner and a silent auction for handmade goods. I'd like to aid as much I can, so I wonder if anyone's done this elsewhere, and what might recieve good attention. One woman mentioned bringing in fudge, but my skills are with craft. :o)

So what do you think? Jewelry? Paintings? Purses? Hair things? iPod cases? I'm a procrastinator, so I haven't started on anything - it's next weekend (the 25th) which means I'll have to finish it in a week.

I was thinking of making a bunch of things, taking them in and seeing what the coordinator would like. Here's my pile of inspiration:
-CD necklaces - pretty easy (possibly a high return?)
-Resin pendants I made a while back
-Stamp pendants I made (but maybe with different images...)
-Jordy bags - Should these be plain, or with some sort of applique? What would YOU like?
-Kanzashi brooches/hair things
-Marsmallow guns - Because there has to be something for the guys, right? How should I decorate these? Spray paint? What colors/designs would you like to see?
-Vinyl cling drink markers? I've seen this here, but can't find a specific link. I think this would also be a good unisex item.
-iPod cases. There are a million tutorials - I'll probably use clear vinyl for a window and maybe canvas with a felt applique. What should I put on it? I have the idea of robots stuck in my head... what else might be good?

Thanks a bunch girls - Let me know if you've participated in something like this, and what went over well!

This one I started in a class on pinwheels. I recently found the fabric I wanted to finish it off and couldn't help myself. I set the Kitty Quilt aside and finished this one up this week while the kids and I were sick. The handwork for the binding was easy enough to do from bed. :)

Hi all!

I'm in search of a good place online (or in Seattle for you locals) to buy Shisha mirrors. $5 for a pacak of 20 is a little more than I'd like to pay. I've check eBay and Google, but the pickings are slim. There are a few UK sites, but the shipping is often quite expensive. Most of the American sites don't have a very good selection or the mirrors have little holes drilled into them, which I don't like.

Thank you!!

This question is for potters (don't know if there are any here!):

For those of you who own a potter's wheel, do you also own a kiln? I know there are some small ones that okay for home use. If you don't have a kiln at home, how do you "fire" your pieces or maybe you don't?

I have taken classes at a ceramics studio, but the cost and inconvenience are starting to become a drag. I'd love to just get down and dirty at home.

Thanks for any insight!

I was given several dresses by a friend. They are rayon with a batik print. The problem is, I don't really like the style/pattern of the dresses. I want to make a skirt or skirts, by cutting the fabric into strips and sewing them together.

My problems are:

I'm not an experienced seamstress by any stretch of the imagination.

I don't have a dress form.

I have a very old basic sewing machine (circa 1960) and no serger.

I have limited funds.

Is such a project realistically possible, given these factors? The fabric is so beautiful, I want to wear it, but I just don't like the dresses.

Sorry this is text only. I haven't done anything worth taking pictures of in awhile.

I tried to find some answers in the memories section, but I didn't see anything similar.

1) I would like to try making little scent lockets out of polymer clay. It is basically a little cage or box on a necklace into which a wool/felt/cotton pad soaked with a perfume oil will be held. However, I have no idea if the essential oils in the perfume will work with the polymer clay medium. Will they just dissolve the clay over time? I just thought I'd ask here before I attempted something that could potentially fall apart and make me sad.

2) I recently bought a print Gocco (probably one of the last in the US!). I've skimmed through the instructions, but I'm a little confused about a few things, since I've never done screen printing of any sort before. Can I reuse the screens? Does anyone know of the maximum print dimensions offhand? and/or does anyone have any templates for business cards? I'd like to make some temporary ones until I get my 4-color ones printed.

Thanks!!! =)

I made this purse over the summer for my sister. My second attempt at making a purse. I don't like the fabric for the strap, it's too stiff.

I don't know how crafty this is, but it amused me.

I have been wanting a Hello Kitty phone for a long time and since they are really expensive and I haven't liked any of the face plates I have seen for them, I decided to make my own.
So with a pink sticker, like this one, some hello kitty stickers and an exacto knife, I made this.

I have about a million more things to take pictures of. ^_~ Lots of huge photos under the cut, dial up users beware. The colour is off because I took these at night. I'll probably take better ones for my site but I'm impatient.

My first craft fair is coming up! I'm so nervous/excited/not ready! :O

I promised pictures of some felt I am sewing on a shirt...but that's not done yet. I put in my tattoo paperwork to get my license today. So, I don't think I'm gonna have time do paint for a while, so, to celebrate my lack of being able to go out and drink tonight, or ever anymore, here's some paintings.

Has anyone here ever made one of these or do you know where I can get the directions to make one? I really want one to use with my photography business - but I can't see spending $150+ for one!

I really like the black one here

Any help would be awesome! :)

Or even really detailed tutorials...I am having a tough time with the illustrations from SnBC...Thanks in advance!

So I am feeling crafty today apparently. I had originally started to make this purple bag as a normal bag, but after looking and looking and not being able to find an attractive laptop bag for my iBook, I decided I would finish it and repurpose it at the same time. Here are the results.
